Edited by: Lightpulse on 03/05/2008 00:44:52 I was mining into a giant secure container in my mining frigate and this cruiser comes up and gets real close to me. The next time I need to move ore over, I notice my GSC is empty. He then moved to my other two GSCs but I had just started mining so they were empty. Now I jettisoned some ore and he stole it so he turned flashing red to me, but I was not sure if going back for my missle frigate was worth it since I am not sure of the aggro rules yet.
Now everything I see online says that secure containers are not hackable, but in rookie help someone told me they were (and it seems it happened to me). Is there any defense against this or do I need to go back to mining in my industrial? |

Did you anchor said GSC? Did it have a password? If the answer is no then anyone can take your ore.
Also, just so you know, flashy red = shoot. |

It sounds to me like the guy guessed your password. That is the only way to get into a GSC that has had the password set. IF you are sure he didnt guess your password then maybe you though you had the pw set but actually did not. |

It would be a little creepy if he guessed my password since it was my phone number at work.
Could the password have been blanked out somehow or would the fact that I had the container open for moving ore have anything to do with it?
When I originally placed it, I tried to reset the password a 2nd time without actually entering it to verify that it had one (there is not indication that I could see) and it did tell me I could not set the password without the (first) password. Maybe that screwed something up?
Why would someone in the rookie help channel tell me they were hackable? |

if you were in 0.8 to 1.0 sec system you can't anchor anything so even if you password it it will not stick and anyone can come and scoop.

I was in .7 so I could anchor.
I think I must not have set the password because it let me change it without entering what I thought the old password was. Unless he somehow wiped the password or me having it open made it unlocked.
The other two wouldn't let me with a blank original. I must have made a noob mistake. I could swear I checked all three after I anchored them. |

Quote: Anchoring and setting the password
After you have launched the container, you must right click it and select the "anchor" option, a process that for large containers can take up to a minute. Be warned that if you don't anchor the container it will expire in 1-2 hours just like a regular container. Furthermore, secure containers which have not been anchored will in fact not be secure, anyone with the available cargo space to carry one will be able to scoop it up into their cargo hold. Therefore it is vital that you anchor your secure containers in order to make sure that the contents stay safe. Once the container is anchored, you can set its password and name. Note that setting the password before you anchor the container will NOT work and will leave the container accessible by all. Giving meaningful names to containers has proved to be very useful; for example you could name the container after the ore that you want other members to put into the container.
Secure containers are built to last and will take quite a punishment before they are destroyed, making them less likely to be blown up. Thus they are a much safer place to store minerals than regular containers.
Be advised that shooting at containers is a criminal offense that will summon Concord or local empire fleet to the defence of the container, usually with dire consequences for the aggressor. This applies even to gangs.

Edited by: Candice Bormardin on 03/05/2008 13:35:42 I'd like to emphasize one point in the post above - you have to password your container every time you anchor it.
Note how it says the container must be anchored BEFORE you can put a password on it.
This means that you MUST go through the entire, launch, anchor, password drill each and every time you try to secure your container. This means that you must remember the password you used last time to put in the Old Password slot - as - while it won't secure the container it is required to set the new password.
I don't recall if the new password can be the same as the old password.
One question about this though. Could the guy have used a decoder to break the security of the container even if you had done everything you were supposed to?

Decoders only work for hacking sites if I recall, would be kinda cool though (but should require lengthy amounts of time) if they could ***** passwords for GSC's and POS's. |

GSC's are great! With the last patch I find I have lots more options to anchor them. Be sure to anchor though! I think I have only actually bought 3, all the rest I pick up from peeps who don't anchor. |
