Do you automatically have a clone in the game, or do you have to create one?
I've read about the 900,000 skill point limit for the starting clone, but I don't know if that's provided automatically or if you have to buy/build one.
Also, after that, I am guessing when you have a clone, you go to a Med Facility to upgrade it.
Still a bit confused, thanks for any help. Couldn't find a Newb Guide specifically on clones.

You always have the 900k clone; that's what you start with and that's what you get after being podkilled. If you have more skillpoints you'll want to upgrade the clone to a higher level at a medical facility. When you lose your pod, your clone will be activated and you get a new 900k clone, so you'll have to upgrade every time you get podded.
If your clone does not cover all your skillpoints and you get podded, you lose 5% of the difference between your SP and the clone SP from your highest rank skill at level V.

Actually just the skill with the most SP in.
A lot of the time time, that will be your highest ranked skill at level 5, but that won't be always the case.

So - you don't lose all you skill points above 900,000 if you get pod killed and only have a basic clone?
Only some of them?

Yup, as Estel said, 5% of the difference between your current SP and what your clone covered, capped to 50% of your skill with the most SP in it.

Well that's not that bad. I had always assumed you lost everything above your clone's capability.
I think I'll still keep my clones up but it's good to know that if I got sloppy about keeping track of where they were I'd not lose what I thought I would.
Thanks.

I stand corrected.

It may not be 'that bad' if you're new, but if you've been playing for a few years forgetting to update your clone can cost you something like a month's worth of skill training... Note you can update your clone from any medical facility, not just the one it's at.

Clones are pretty cheap, unless you're monumentally bad at managing your finances you shouldn't ever find yourself unable to afford a suitably-sized clone. A 6.1 million SP clone only costs 250k isk, and if you have that much SP you should be able to make that much in no time. Even the biggest clone costs 150 million isk, and that one retains about 400 times more SP than the highest verified character in the game currently has...
