Perhaps a game mechanic might be designed such that after a certain tonnage of ships is present in a grid, or a certain number of ships, chances get higher and higher that anything trying to warp into that grid get warped into an adjacent grid instead.
That classic "interference" and "gravitational anomoly" sci-fi thing.
after you have 100 ships and a titan or two in a grid, trying to get anything else in that grid is going to require manual piloting from adjacent grids into the target grid, or a lot of luck.
People would start bringing in fleets by squad or wing to adjoining grids, and ducking back and forth across the grid lines to avoid titan DD's. Fewer dense blobs. Grid population levels for large combats wouldn't change much, but there would be less collision detection issues. Fewer issues with trying to load grid data to 250 ships all at the same time, etc.
Lots of potential issues, but I can't see any that are impossible to work around.

What's that you say? A game mechanic that prevents us from totally Zerging each other all day long?
And worse, it says if I Zerg too much at once, I can't call in my EIGHT Titans to finish everyone off?

So this way I can bring my 100 ships and a titan to the grid, but your fleet shows up in bits and pieces? sounds great.

this just means that big battles take longer. If its 1000 v 100 and its 100 per side in a grid those 100 ships will still have to kill ships at a ratio of 10 to 1. They might get more kills but they are still going to get owned hard.
Also if 1 side has more ships but the other side is 2 seperate alliances they will be able to bring more ships into the area. Or as you didn't appear to suggest limiting by Allinace/corp 1 side could just 4/5th fill a grid then pick off the other side 25 ships at a time even tho they could be outnumbered 10 billion to 75.
