I was wondering what the role of the destroyer was?
In the destroyers write up it is indicated that they are natural frigate hunters. But stories written by pirates indicate that the prefered vessel is a battle cruiser.
When I asked about using a destroyer to hunt rats, people said forget the destroyer its tank is to low and that I should just get a cruiser.
So if real pirates dont use frigates and npc pirates can kill a destroyer what role does a destroyer actual fill? It hung in the air exactly like a brick shouldn't. |

A Destroyer can deal out good damage for its size, but it will get popped if you spit at it. If you have the gunnery skills to back them up they can be dangerous. IMO they are underestimated, but there is a risk to flying them in PvP
In terms of Highsec/PvE they make quick work of harder L1 missions. They barely take any extra time to get into compared to a frigate. And yes they make awesome salvagers if you have a hauler alt you can bring along with you.

The Thrasher is reasonably fast and can perform a frigate-like role with a lot more guns. It's also a decent light hauler... with expanded cargoholds it can squeeze in two MSCs and still be fast enough to evade many a gatecamp.
I see little value in the other destroyers, as they're too big and slow to evade damage like a frigate. They are fine for level 1 missions, for running Recon 3 of 3 (with a cruiser-size afterburner), and for salvaging your own wrecks. For salvaging other people's wrecks they suck.

All destroyers should work fine in lvl 1 missions. With the right destroyer (understand doing the right damage for the rats you fight), you'll run lvl 2 missions fast (there are mainly frigates there).
If your gunnery skills are too low, you will do nothing with a destroyer (other than lvl1s, it will take forever in lvl2s and you would even loose it). -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Destroyers make great anti frigate platforms, as such it's always nice to have 1 or 2 (mostly younger players) with a gang to support the BS's, taking out tacklers and whatnot. Most useful one in that role is the Coercer imo, lots of lowslots for tracking and damage mods.
For PVE they're great to rush through lvl 1 missions, after that they're useful as a salvager ship after completing a mission.

Having just activated my account out of trial, I'm a bit low on the authoritarian information scale, but I won't let that stop me from commenting about my beloved Gallente destroyer "Good Enough" and its impact on my life.
What was nice about it was that it was really fast to train for and get into. It didn't take long to get the first rank trained and that's all I've bothered with. So, instead of rushing to cruisers at the expense of other useful skills, I was able to get into it and start using its larger cargo space in a very short period of time and do some decent cash making while I work on becoming a bit more capable before reaching for cruiser.
I'm not planning to stay in Good Enough, but she'll do until I feel less of a rookie. Really, it looks like a great bridging ship for new pilots that are looking for a bit more versatility before they can reach the bigger stuff and fancier options...

If you're interested in training destroyers, I hope its so you can jump in an interdictor, otherwise it is useless in pvp. Great for salvaging tho.

Edited by: MotoMissles on 15/05/2008 22:35:01 Yes, they're good salvagers, but once you get into level 4 missions, you'll need something with quite a bit more cargo space unless you want to go back for a hauler.
Salvaging Hurricane FTW! 2000 m3 of space with t2 cargo expanders, won't get popped instantly in a level 4 mish if you find yourself targetted, giving you time to warp out, and still moderately quick (200 m/s in my boat).
Perfect for combat/salvage dual boxing in lvl 4 mishs. Immediate salvaging even keeps the loot thieves at bay.

Quake ammo? that messes up your tracking, use phased plasma or something similar. Gives you enough range.

in addition to all posted above
destroyers are the cheaper choice between the frigate and the assault frigate : destroyers roughly posses the firepower of the assault frigate class in terms of damage per second, but they have much weaker shield and armor tank; at the same time the destroyers can move somewhat faster than assault frigates
destroyers are easy to replace as compared to tech 2 frigate class
they are often used as a cheap vessels for suicide runs, for example hi-security aggression

Destroyers make great anti-frigate/anti-drone support ships in a fleet. They are also great in a pack. Agony regularly takes classes of new destroyer pilots out and usually has a battleship or two on the kill-board by the end of the lesson.

It is basically a big overgrown frigate. It cannot mount a better tank than a frigate because it doesn't have any more slots. Yes it is slower and has larger signature radius.
Some good uses for a destroyer are: 1. doing level 1,2 missions faster since you got more firepower and it makes for an excellent small-turret sniper due to bonuses the ship gets 2. salvage ship, has lots of high slots for salvagers and tractor beams 3. suicide ganker, a few of these ships can blow up mining barges in belts for example 4. a ship that some bored vets might attempt to use to snipe at some lone interceptors, with good skills it can snipe over 60km

If you are a rookie from a military school you can get the skills to fly a destroyer within minutes of starting the game.
Get salvaging trained and you can run your level one missions and get the full amount they are worth.
Half an hour of ratting today got me enough salvage to pay for the destroyer, not to mention the loot and bounty fee's.
So - destroyers are great starter ships.
Use them to run your low level missions while you build your skills.
If you want to PVP then you are probably better off with a Frigate as it's cheaper to replace when you get blown up. In any case, as a new player you don't want to be out PVPing by yourself unless you're can baiting people newer than you are.
Now, you can also get into a cruiser fairly quickly but until you have your skills trained up you probably shouldn't. Frigates are cheaper than destroyers and destroyers are cheaper than cruisers. Mostly what jumping to cruisers before you're ready will do is make you think you're a lot more powerful than you really are.

Well, it can be outdone in 2 of 3....
1 - Battlecruisers work much better - tougher, more lows for cargo expanders, more cap 2 - Intys - fast, speedlock...

If you have the resources to use a battleship or battle cruiser to salvage wrecks - good for you.
For those who don't - destroyers work very well and cost vastly less.
