Well, linux is "in theory" officially supported yet eve voice doesn't work, graphics are corrupt, the game freezes randomly... not to mention that we can even run the latest version of the game.
At some point I would like to get a fully working client in linux. Is there anyone who can help me with this? I can't seem to get a useful resolution to any of these issues through petitions.

I think that wine is a much better solution than the offica cedega client.. better fps, not so many graphical errors.
what computer do you have? what dist? what graphics-card? wine or cedega? etc... ;)

I find my eve in linux is perfect. All functions work in Ubuntu 8.04. I followed the setup in the sticky and everything is fine.

For the last couple weeks I've been running wine. (.9.58 and now 1.rc1). The cedega client on my system has corrupted graphics (reported) and a few other glitches. These were bug reported, and the bug report team indicated they wanted me to bump up to a BETA nvidia driver...which ain't gonna happen on my production system.
Wine + premium using the current 'release' nvidia drivers has been running beautifully in windowed or fullscreen mode, and since the compiz regression was fixed in rc1, I don't even need to lose 3d desktop to ensure stability.
Crossover games was (while testing it recently) running very smoothly as well.
A note: there are problems with the nvidia 7xxx series of cards and some gfx via wine. The 8xxx series seem to work fine.
I've been an advocate of the official client, and Transgaming has indicated a lot of new stuff coming june with their new cedega beta, but I am extremely disappointed that quarter 1 has come and gone with no indicators regarding premium graphics.
So until that happens, I run EVE to play under wine, and I'll continue testing the official wrapped client, but the gfx corruption is too highly annoying, pervasive and distracting to use for extended corp/alliance operations.

I seem to remember a step by step guide to installing EVE with WINE, but I can't seem to find it

OK, update on the premium client.
We encountered some very unexpected issues (with compiled effects over ASCII effects and some other annoying issues that took quite some time to track down).
I will be attending a meeting this afternoon and will get CCP Whisper to update you after that.

Edited by: Cori4n on 21/05/2008 01:27:18 You know, I can guess what a 'compiled effect' might be...
But what the heck is an ASCII effect?

They must be making a version to run on *real* linux computers, by piping the video output to aalib so that it can be played on a tty!

Probably something related to the unicode support that is still listed as somewhat missing on the known issues page.

I've been playing Eve via Wine for a couple of years now.
Tried out the official Linux version for a few weeks - was annoyed by bugs that I didn't get via wine and gave up on that for the time being. So far I have found 0 advantage using the official client. Has something drastic changed during the last few months? --- ISK BUYER = LOOSER EVE TV- Bring it back!

I hope there will be 64-bit build. Not much different, but just for the principle... I don't know anymore many people who are on 32-bit platform.
