For anyone wanting to integrate the EVE Strategic Maps (ESM) Grid-refs into their eve-website/application, you can download them download in Excel and CSV format (CSV is for website developers).
If you develop a web-site/application with the refs in it, let me know via EVE mail or the site blog and I'll add your linkage to the web site.
/Serenity.
Apps so far displaying the ESM references are: ICSC Jumpplanner

Rather good idea! Much appreciated over here, I'll be integrating this into EVE Metrics.

Great idea, and thank you for releasing to the community!!!
Any chance of getting more spatially specific data? By this I mean that D8 is a handy way of referring to a star system, but for a lot of programmatic accesses it is too vague. Something like 2.50 by 10.39 would be truly stellar!
(Pun intended.)
On the other hand, if getting that specific is a threat to your IP, I can understand that as well.
Thanks, either way!

You do realize that people aren't going to be able to make sence of more specific references.
The purpose of this data is so that people making Eve related tools can provide a cross-reference for people to look up in the book if they want to. Example: Jita (Page 28 - Grid E4)

You do realize, I said programmatic. I know what I'm getting at. But thanks for clarifying... |

I would love to know how you get programmatic access to a physical book?
Of course if you wanted to programmaticly reproduce the book, those detailed positions would be helpful. I wonder, could you create a digital version of the book from just the grid locations provided...

No, you can't. Because the grid they provide is not very fine, you end up with a lot of overlap, and stars in the same place.
There is a real need for EVE 2D map information to be open sourced or available via API. However, this probably runs counter to the EVE MAPS business model, which is to sell hardcopy maps of their IP.
Gunfleet has thought about both making the 2D maps ourselves (about 30 minutes per region), and extracting data from existing PDF maps. I don't feel right extracting position data from PDF, as it feels very much like stealing someone else's hard work.
Now, on the other hand, if Ombey or Serenity would release a dataset under a GNU license, I'd feel better about it.
One way or another, we'll sort it out and release a 2D map data under an open-source license. I don't see that changing the need for EVE MAPS, so I do hope that Serenity and Ombey won't be too angry...

At risk of dragging this topic completely and utterly off course, I agree. ESM is an awesome tool for the job, which is quick reference. Computerised equivalents will always be more adaptable but by and large they're not too useful. They have their places, but 99% of people will want ESM either on it's own or as a supplement to any such programs. I've got ESM and I'm still working on an EVE map in Processing, for example- I can't visualise data so well with a book, but I wouldn't dream of using my Processing app for routeplanning. -- Ix Forres EVE Application Developer ISKsense | RLS-EVE | Blog |

It's an interesting proposition *if it were true* that it wouldn't effect reward for Effort and further development. In Ombey's case it's Shattered Crystal GTC. In ESM case, it's sale of the printed book.
All the ESM Data is already stored in a database, so it would be easy to do. However it's up to MMM Publishing as they have the licence and copyright.
On the otherhand, if there is a good mapping application out there, it is also possible for ESM to licence the application and insert the data.

Gunfleet might have an application like that.
We're also speaking with Ombey, but what types of licensing would you be thinking of? Anything we do will be most likely open sourced in the end, as we strongly believe in transparency and giving back to the community - you might want to factor that into your thinking...

Great let's hook-up in-game and talk about the app. It's a possibility to use "copy-left" to have an open source application with proprietary IP.
On giving back to the community, that's what the book is for; Plus work over the last 2+ years ... - Syndicating out the Alliance Ranking (Sov, Members, Outposts and history) - Running Outpost Alert! email newsletter
and ... don't forget the Council of Stellar managmement

Sounds fantastic! I have been online, off and on, most of the weekend. I'll be on this evening PST as well. If we haven't gotten in touch, I'll EVE mail you my email address, and we'll go from there! :)
