Ok, you get in your hulk, you run off to a belt, maybe even something special you had to scan down.
Once their, you target a roid, fire your devastating laser to mine... and go eat lunch while it works. Every couple of minutes, dump another load into a jetcan, and have someone in a hauler pick it up like garbage day happens every 20 minutes.
Well, that's a sparkling burst of excitement. I think I can come up with a way to improve it.
Exhumer sided compacting, by doing a minigame. The faster you can play, the faster you can mine and compact, you set the speed. It would look like tetris, or one of it's countless clones. Get rows together with no empty space in them, and they get auto pushed into your storage hold. You set the speed, if it maxes out over the top however, your laser shuts down till you can make more room for incoming ore.
Exhumer sided special ore: For every skill you have in an ore type, you can identify the ore as it comes up your laser. Shuffle and match ore clusters together, and your systems will confirm the material as present. Material gets then transported by matched clumps as pre-refined ore concentrate of the types you have skill to identify. (Probably resembles bejeweled, or any of the countless clones of that type) (Got several ore skills? then you can get several types. In real life, asteroids aren't just single types of ore, but are often blends packed together) This would let the miner use far less space in the cargo hold, as the pre-refined ore would be bigger than end refined, but far smaller than raw, allowing it to be stored with greater efficiency.
Now, this would have a side effect, mining would become more immersive, causing players to not notice things creeping up on them perhaps. It would also make mining a bit more fun. |

Hmmm... So, you're trying to play EVE AND TETRIS at the same time? I'm going to say **** no.
This is absurd at best. The idea being that mining becomes like Tetris? WTF did this come from?
No.

Ooohhhhh, I get it... I just got trolled! Well done.

2/10 Actually, the idea is to inject something into mining that is proactive for being interesting, rather than simply tedious.
All mining offers right now is ultimately repetitive. At least this would let the player do more than dump ore into a jet can, or target the next asteroid in an unending series.
Assuming you mine, what would you do to make it more engaging?

Ok, looking for a parallel to your logic.
You associate regular mining to being a ship on autopilot. (Well, enough suspect bots for more activity here than other places I can think of). By comparison, I assume it should still be available, but be a slower and less efficient way to mine.
This would be manual mining, using the minigame as a way to emulate the interface in an entertaining way. Not sure if you can do both, or just choose 1, but by focusing, you would be able to store a lot more in a hulk, and ultimately your hauler you mentioned.
Close enough?
I admit, I have sympathy for the idea that direct player interaction should make mining yield better results than a bot gets. |

While I don't ore mine all that much anymore, I would be more inclined to revisit it if I could be rewarded with more yeild, a shorter cycle time or something that involves more interaction. I would keep mining as it is right now, but add another layer that encourages actively mining in some way, as moving ore to a jetcan (if you even mine that way) and switching rocks can hardly be considered "interaction". |

2/10 Dude, you don't HAVE to do it. This minigame is just for those who aren't AFK and want something to do. Besides, some people rock at Tetris, and Mining tends to get boring VERY quickly. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine. |

This idea has been suggested plenty of times before.
Whilst i like the idea of having an "active mining" and "passive mining" approach added to the game, choosing minigames like above is far too open to exploitation and botting.
It's also immersion breaking in that the minigame isn't really anything to do with the actual act of mining.
Another issue is the "novelty" of the minigame would soon wear off and become tedious and a chore.
If you want to add an active mining "bonus" make it about using your ship and modules, working with a friend who's prospecting for the juicy bits in the roid (social addition) or at least something that requires human thought and decision making over procedural repetitive "play". Curiosity killed the Kata...
... but being immortal he wasn't too worried about keeping a count. |

-1 for mini games for mining.
Visual cues might be useful to maximise yields on roids perhaps, but as to how thats best achieved without being tedious in a non "twitch" based targeting game for use for lasers probably needs some thought. |

Tetris was the closest analogy that has a fairly common understanding to most players I could think of. The idea is that you would manually operate the laser so that the ore did not have gaps or other space consuming parts like the automated process has.
For every section that you compacted, you could transfer to your cargo hold that section, leaving the remaining ore in a sorting tray. Since this introduces new material from one side, the effect would most resemble the game mentioned more than anything I can easily describe.
It's just an analogy, but if the experience of using it is considered fun and challenging for similar reasons, the miner still can enjoy it. |

Heart's in the right place, but this is immersion breaking and honestly I picture it as being kind of goofy, even if we definitely need something to achieve what you are looking for.
Wouldn't be smarter to have certain survey scanner modules open up a window where you are looking close range at the rock while it's being blasted in progress? You can then look for "hotspots" of ore similar to how people do in PI. Players then move their lasers around to get the best spot, earning them some bonus amount of ore for that cycle.
The spots move around, and to keep the maximum bonus possible a pilot has to pay attention and keep moving the lasers with them.
Could even add skills to better pinpoint hotspots or whatever... maybe you can only see the hotspots on a particular type of rock with XXXXX processing 3+ or something. Just a thought. Come2Nullsec |

You can set it to take certain sections manually, using your skill with that ore to identify them, while disintegrating others that are worthless.
The base concept of a sorting tray comes from history, the modern equivalent being simply the scanner window on the section of roid you are considering. Semi-automated tools to let you highlight chosen sections of material for selection, and blast for discarding, are equally practical.
Paying attention while mining should always give better results than being 80% AFK and just dumping into a jetcan. |

To which I obviously agree, based on my response.
Playing asteroid tetris just sounds hackneyed and not quite space-ageish.
Your "compressed ore" also sounds like it infringes on one of the rorqual's roles. Come2Nullsec |

The rorqual does the compressing wholesale, and to an extreme that goes beyond what my idea allows. You can't 'compress' ore for anyone but yourself with my idea, but the rorqual can handle it for everyone, and to a greater level of compression. |

Yes definitely, mining needs more depth on this aspect.
You don't push a PvP button, and watch it handle your fights, but after you activate your mining lasers that's all you do except unload your ore. |

if im stuck running a mini-game, then how the hell am i supposed to notice or interact with the greater-game when some random nobody in a 'nado warps in the belt with an intent to voilence my barge?

No. What the OP wants is something OPTIONAL to do while we are mining so that it is less boring, and that it would come with some benefits.
Also, logic would dictate that it would pop up as a window and not a fullscreen UI element. This is my signature. There are many like it, but this one is mine. |

And this would not be some glitzy mini game, but a gritty ore sorting exorcise designed to trade extended effort into greater reward.
There is no need to make mining less rewarding or more dangerous, those aspects are present already as has been noted. |
