First, I guess we have to establish the problem(s) with blob warfare: 1) Lag. I think this will always be an issue. If lag for a certain size blob is solved, blobs will only get larger. 2) Combat less interesting (IMO). FC calls primary, target vaporised. Secondary vaporised, etc etc. 3) Lack of timezone balance. Maybe this isn't a really big problem, but it would seem silly to have two alliances of approximately equal numbers fighting, but one always outnumbering the other just because of different timezones.
Solutions?
I haven't seen anything compelling as of yet. Some proposed solutions involve a nerf to ships in the system, or not allowing beyond a certain number of one alliance in a system. A nerf to every ship still benefits the larger group (since it nerfs all equally). A nerf based on alliance/fleet size in system would just be circumvented by splitting up fleets/alliances.
A hard cap on system number (which GMS have apparently implemented at times) benefits the defender or whoever happens to be in the system disproportionately.
Titans and other large AOE weapons just seem like they will be abused. If they nerfed titans a bit people would probably just jump in more titans. Titans just seem to encourage capital blobs.
Generally, I can't think of a single MMO with open pvp that hasn't had issues with blob warfare. It seems its always either ganking on a small scale (7v1 or whatever) or blobbing on a massive scale. If i remember correctly shadowbane had this problem...I don't think anything was ever done and then the game died.

in the Oveur era the speculation was of diminished returns on focus fire, Hammer and Tux didn't like it so I guess Eve is gonna die like shadowbane :[ ___ Eve Players are not very smart. Support Killmail Overhaul

i didn't intend that to be a suggestion of causation (that eve will end up like SB). Hopefully it won't. Shadowbane died of lag and other things, although IMO it had a really cool innovative system in terms of castle building and world pvp. However there were suggestions that people were getting bored and fed up with POS warfare.
Again, the problem with diminishing returns with focus fire is that the blob still has the advantage. They focus fire on 5 targets (to get optimal DPS output), while your blob which happens to be 1/5 the size can only focus fire on 1 target (to get optimal DPS output). The bigger blob wins again.
but w/e I guess I buy GTCs with ISK so I'm not paying cash $$, so who am I to complain?

Edited by: xena zena on 22/05/2008 08:16:12 I don't think anything can solve blob warfare, titans was an attempt to make it costly to fly around in blobs and if anything blobs are more common now (to protect or try to kill them). Now we have issues of capital blobs approaching hundreds which greatly compounds the lag even more.
The only real solution is to just make the servers powerful enough and dynamically load balancing enough to handle the load without lagging....
I'd prefer an instanced/deadspace approach to sov war anyway, which can be used to limit ship classes and types in the battlefield.. *shrug*
As for titans, I thought it was a good itea that they can remote fire on cynos, maybe reintroduce that but have a system-wide cooldown of 1 hour per DD as opposed to just ship-wide cool down, that way those with 8 titans can't have a virtual "i win" button but with the immediate remote threat of a DD like they originally had, greatly makes it more dangerous to blob up. |
