I've just read Exploration Guide V2.0 By Joerd Toastius, and I'm keen to get started. Are there any other guides as to the sort of content I can expect from combat, hacking and archaeology sites? IÆm looking for a general guide and have a few specific questions such as: òIs it worth it? Does exploration pay or it more of an amusing distraction? òWill a solo raven be able to handle the combat encounters? What sort of rats can I expect? òDo the hacking/archaeology sites have rats that need to be cleared? òDoes security of the system influence the difficulty of the sites found?
Thanks

You can expect combat, hacking and archaeology, naturally :)

You can make more isk/hr by running lvl 4 missions

Depends where, for high and most low sec finds drake is sufficient. Some 0.0 are not doable solo in anything.

Yes

Yes, but only in levels - high, low, 0.0. No difference inside a level apparently.

This is second hand info but I've seen my corpmates bring back a haul of 6-700 million worth of blueprints and such. That is what inspired me to pursue Hacking and learn covops / astrometrics. But then I've also seen him go for a long time w/o getting a single hit
We operate in 0.0 tho

Running the exploration sites is far far more profitable than lvl 4 missions. Finding them is another kettle of fish. If you want exploration to be profitable you will need
Covops 4 Signal Acquisition 4 Astrometrics 4 Astrometric Pinpointing 4 Astrometric Triangulation 4
A covops w/ 2 gravity capacitor rigs and a sisters scan probe launcher.
This will make your scan time about 130 seconds and allow you to find a site about every hour. Skills less than this and I guarantee you will grow frustrated waiting endlessly for scans to finish and re dropping probes after only a few tries.
Grabbing the PPG and PPH implants is also recommended to cut down further on scan time and increase probe strength.

I live in 0.0 and have run exploration in all types of space, secure or not. Here's my 2cents.
~If you're looking for steady isk/hour, then by far mission running is more profitable. It can take a long time to even find an exploration site, if you're looking for a signature. I've had one site take nearly 3 hours to pin, with near max skills. It's all chance based ~Exploration can, however, be very profitable as depending on what sig type you are running, it can have items only found in exploration. Example of this would be decryptors, and interface BPC's that can only be found in a radar exploration, as far as i know. The above mentioned site that took 3 hours to find, yielded a 4 run Ship interface BPC. After running 2 more radars tog et the mats, i built all 4 and sold for approx. 360mil. ~~Know that you won't always make alot of money, but you can make it all at once~~ The combat sites can have commander spawns, i've had several with over 100mil loot each. Even the anomalies, which are much easier usually, can have a commander spawn.
~ radar/magnometric sites can be run in a BC usually, larger combat sites need atleast 1 BS to tank, or another method, like a nano. I reccomend atleast 2 people for the larger combats, it makes it much faster. ~ Radar/Magnometric sites do have rats that need to be cleared. Also, each can has a chance to spawn more rats when you open it, though usually not more than cruisers.
~As mentioned, each set has different difficulty exploration, like low-sec, hi-sec, 0.0.
~ never underestimate the value of gravimetric signatures. I've found hidden asteroid belts with over 50k bistot int hem, some worth over 600mil.

Yup, if you don't have access to 0.0 you make maybe (if you're very lucky) 50-100M in empire, unless you stumble across one of those super rare plexes that spawn in empire like once a year.

6/10 plexes spawn in low sec quite often, also radar sites in gallente low sec space can be profitable, you will still make good isk, but not as good as in some 0.0 regions.
