Ok, we all know the problem of big fleet fights, well, most of us do. as soon as more then 60-100 peeps in two or more opposing fleets start shooting each other, the node goes in the crapper and TS goes: "Lag..!!! / Desynched..!!! CTDed...!! Someone with grid load call targets.." and so on.
CCP is aware, we know, however the latest approach with the upcoming expansion, where the amount of damage is capped and the time for which damage is incurred becomes relevant, is not suitable for PvP. So, how do we discourage people from big fleet fights?
How about this:
The more ships that target one single ship, this ships signature radius is reduced ( i wont give any numbers here, since that requires finetuning and playtesting). The beauty of this approach is that the more ships lock one target the longer the targeting will take, not to mention that the damage is also reduced. This way striking one BS with 50 BS becomes pointless. Being primaried wont be as devastating as it is now. As a result fleets will have to spread their damage, e.g: 5BS target Victim A, 5 BS target victim B and so on... but you simply cannot do this on a very large scale because of comms limitations.
Ingame reasons would be that to many targeting systems create to much interference and therefore make it harder to aquire and target.
This system is a good approach because it doesnt tell the player that he cant bring a 200 ship fleet, he still can, it just wont get him anywhere.
Should the mechanic described above prove not discouraging enough, some sort of auto jamming effect could be implemented, meaning that once a certain threshold of ships locking one target is reached, all ships might get jammed, with chance increasing with number of ships locking.
Open for discussion, but please dont just state "i dont like it", if you dislike the idea, state some reasons... _________________________________________________

bring a lot of logistics pilots that all lock each other and couple fleet mates to shoot shield, cap, armor to. we have just made ourselves unlockable or down the equivalent of rsd on your whole fleet.

simply disregard friendly locks from the calculation then.... _________________________________________________

sub squads on separate ts channels. all get fleet orders from fc and then have primary wing leader. now it isn't a big fleet battle it is just a lot of smaller ones and still just as much lag.

well - this doesnt prevent big fleets, it only sort of adresses the issue of primary = insta pop
...which was discussed a long time ago (a similar idea was mentioned there too) in a different thread
if i find time i will look for it and link it here later ---

no i fully agree something needs to be done. just not sure how this idea was going to help with the specific issue the op asked about.

ok, i see your points, how about if we modify this part of the op:

to this:
once a certain amount of players have started locking each other in the same grid (lets say 60) a small chance is given that everyone in the grid loses his lock, this chance increases with the number of ships beyond the threshold. at around 250 people locking in the same grid this chance should be almost 100%. _________________________________________________
