CEI-TBH.com
Please follow the link above if you wish to try out Cutting Edge's Geo-Political Alliance Map. I will stress that it is an early stage of development and refinements will be introduced after I return from the States in 3 weeks (so unfortunately, if there are any status changes, they will have to wait till I return - though I am around till Thursday to correct any immediate inaccuracies).
Any constructive critisism (with respect to the map) is more than welcome, although with the wider CEI website currently under construction, there are areas away from the map itself which still need attending to, so don't be too harsh .

a VERY interresting project. Maybe u should divide regions with player controlled stations in 3 which could be interresting with all the action u get in some sectors

This prompted me to change me computer settings, not many things make me get technical!
This should go up amongst the links on the moderator made thread collecting all maps, I know you can do it, be constructive, b-e con-struc-tive!
Only complaint would be that Arcadia claims a piece of Syndicate space to and same goes for the JQA so that block of space would have to be jigsawed into a few pieces and distributed but overall a very good tool to use when teaching class.

EDIT: And of course right after this I found it.

If possible, make the map twice as big, add major constellations (i.e. those with stations/chokepoints) that would give more use to the zoom feature. For bonous points use the station names too, including those for the conquerable stations.

I have to say thats the coolest map i have seen to date, it really helps in seeing the political situation and this would be a great asset for n00bs and vets alike.
Well done and keep up the good work

it looks nice indeed!
but woudl be good if you could rotate it so its the same as the eve map when the camera is 'reset', curent one is confusing meh head :P
also could you let ppl 'click' to select a region even if you move the cursor from the bar for a sertain alliance, and ofc when it gets more complete some usefull info/stats :)

Nice map. Can we get an option to rotate it? Confusing for it to be on its side . . . also consider blowing it up and adding the empire regions as well.

Edited by: Killgorde on 04/05/2004 10:33:30 Edited by: Killgorde on 04/05/2004 09:34:42 The concept was inspired to a degree by Mistress Barbara as well as CEI's own search for an alliance to join following our exit from Fountain (which shifted my focus from the ship comparator I was working on at the time).
Addressing certain issues highlighted so far in this thread (and many thanks to those who have responded):
Originally by: Ishkur Very nice. Only feedback here is that XETIC/Immensea Federation tends to go by "XIF" rather than "X & I" :)
Oops û sorry mate. Hopefully ok now
Originally by: Danton Marcellus Only complaint would be that Arcadia claims a piece of Syndicate space to and same goes for the JQA so that block of space would have to be jigsawed into a few pieces.
A number of regions still need attention. I will address this when I return at the end of May (The FE ones being the biggest headache as I am not sure at present who is claiming what in that area). The level of accuracy will be determined to a great degree (should there be sufficient level of interest) by the alliances concerned but their input will be essential.
No problems doing the jigsawing, Danton û my only enemies at the moment are time (holiday approaching) and the correct intel (in this respect ArcadiaÆs baby) û I promise I will address Syndicate (including JQA etc) along with the other regions currently displayed as unoccupied asap after I return.
Originally by: Mr Popov If possible, make the map twice as big, add major constellations (i.e. those with stations/chokepoints) that would give more use to the zoom feature. For bonous points use the station names too, including those for the conquerable stations.
Point taken, Mr Popov, however at the design stage various factors have to be decided. One is the display area û the compromise of using 1024x768 was determined after my beta experience doing a map when in TTI as Shaeffer which some may remember (the in-game one wasnÆt too clever at the time). A lot of guys and gals are using a laptop/14ö 2nd monitor and if I push the size up too high it becomes difficult to use easily û and ease of use is one of my main priorities.
With respect to major constellations/chokepoints: The current file size of the map page is 40k û enabling fast access over the net. Increasing the level of detail is doable, but the more detail thatÆs added the more will require editing when there are any status changes (I wouldnÆt want updating the map to become a full-time job ;)). That said, conquerable stations (showing controlling the allianceÆs flag) will be added û I didnÆt see much point adding them till I return as they, more than anything else, are likely to change status in the next few weeks. ôWar zonesö or ôHot Spotsö will be added in the future as well.
NB: Also please read my response to Reah below on the 2nd page û the map is only the first phase of a possible ôAlliance Info Hubö should it gain acceptability, and as such the map itself will only serve as an initial interface û there are wider issues which I feel deserve more time
Originally by: Reah Would be good if you could rotate it so its the same as the eve map when the camera is 'reset', current one is confusing meh head :P
Two problems here û Unfortunately, the Eve universe doesnÆt lend itself to a 1024x768 shape in its natural state û so I had to take a few liberties with respect to the representation. An option would have been to create the map with Swift3D but that would have presented two major difficulties: a) file size referred to above would go through the roof and b) my love life would have gone down the pan with the time needed to create and update .
With respect to rotation û without getting too technical the region names are currently locked inside movie clips for the individual regions themselves û rotation can be done but I refer you to b) above ,

Originally by: Reah Could you let ppl 'click' to select a region even if you move the cursor from the bar for a certain alliance, and ofc when it gets more complete some useful info/stats
Referring to the thread by Mistress Barbara û itÆs confusing as hell for corporations currently unaffiliated to decide which one suits their style of play. CEI, for example, were never particularly happy with the direction the FA took û we are a small corp and have no wish to greatly expand our numbers (which was in direct contravention to what was being demanded of us by certain elements within the FA Council), but our exit from Fountain left us with a dilemma as to which alliance suited our style of play (the current FA doesnÆt).
With the above in mind:
Phase 2 (should there be a demand, and if alliances are prepared to finance my time away from the game (in isk) to develop them) will include individual ôAlliance Homepagesö selectable from the buttons at the bottom (similar to our own corporationÆs Biography page at the CEI website, but with corp icons rather than ugly mug shots you see there). Alliances will potentially have their own ticker and scrolltext (which they can update themselves) to put across their own messages should they wish û as well as links to individual corporations own websites. I will stress that this is entirely dependant on the various alliances enthusiasm for this venture. The alliance CEI is currently in negotiations with will have a page put up for free as a working example should we come to an amicable arrangement over the membership issue with them.
I hope the above has given some indication of the intended direction this project should it gain a reasonable level of participation by the alliances concerned.

It's a bit unfair (on new members) expanding until CEI has relocated and our situation has stabilised - which is why we are not actively recruiting at this time. When we do, none of us are very enthusiastic about developing a "large" corporation, so spaces will be limited. However, the door is always going to be open for players of our former acquaintance (and guys in Eve with a good rep) - it really depends who is applying. Unless it's someone I or the other ex-DaoC guys can vouch for (or the TBH guys can re: Ex-JumpGaters), it's a collective corp decision - see Career Opportunities at HQ and particularly Selection Process for criteria.
There are/were some great guys and girls on Excal - which as you probably are aware also has its fair share of the 1337kiddiebrigade (who will always, if you know my past to any degree, be an anametha to me). The same applies to the TBH guys and JG.

One more update for you... Arcadia is now part of NORAD, so you can show both Outer Ring and Cloud Ring as NORAD and remove the Arcadia link.
No need to do anything with Syndicate, it's not considered NORAD space.

What we need is CCP to release a map tool.
They could just rip out the in-game map code (I know that its modularised) and turn it into a standard exe.
Then allow people to make custom map data to feed it.
Then walla! you can a zoomable, rotatable, and easily star coloured map in 3D!!!!!!

Very nice work :) Added it to my bookmarks.
One suggestion, when you select any alliance it shows their current NAPs, Wars etc - very useful BUT it doesn't list who the highlighted sections are, you have to scroll through the other alliances to figure things out. Maybe mark the alliance borders on to the actual map?
