/signed Praise: Epic videos for all!!! If they come out looking anything like the recent eve trailer I feel people will flock to the game. It benefits everyone involved from serving as a strategy guide, to insane promotion for CCP. Not to mention it would solve inflation with people doing crazy things for awesome vids and make for a new aspect to the game.
CCP: Free advertising and lots of happy players, hmmmm DO IT!
Thoughts: I would suggest more description on the user interface. I am assuming that this is a feature that you can turn on and off fairly easily. Maybe something off to the left hand side of the screen or a hotkey option.

Thanks guys, I r wanting this lots.
'Cause to be honest, I've not got the time to spend on creating nber vids, instead, can just pew, load editor, save Saw III like epileptic camera effects, and quickly Fraps it, or export it as high-quality frames, and use VirtualDub to make an immense-sized AVI , stick it up on Eve-Files.com for you guys to enjoy!
The part that I love is that you could use a covert ops frigate to go see a HUUUUUUUUUUGE fleet fight, stay cloaked the whole while, and just wait... Then when all the lag is over, you could replay the video, lag-free, maybe even give the whole fleet fight to your corp or alliance to watch, then make an nber video for it , and stick it up on (R.I.P. Stage6 ) YouTube, maybe even just use snippets as hi-lights, or just get some sweet images ^^
AMAGAD CCP! C'MON! DO WANT! (I ain't the only one either )

I support this very much indeed! The internet needs more delicious EVE videos!
The Quake 3 game engine had something like this it was awesome! You could record maybe half an hour of gameplay and it would maybe be 2mb or something.
All you had to do was to bring down the console and type "/record demo1" and the game would record what you did, and what everyone else did on the map, simple.
You could then later play it by typing "/demo demo1", and there was another awesome command called "cl_avidemo", so you typed "/cl_avidemo 30" while playing back the demo and it would render the whole match/battle at a consistent 30 FPS and dump them as TGA frames in a folder, where you could later easily merge them into a video file. I've seen some pretty amazing videos using "/cl_avidemo 60" ensuring a smoother playback, because after all... Quake 3 is a very fast and twitchy game.
I would absolutely love to see something like this in EVE. I have my doubts however...
How can your client record everything that is happening around you? I am pretty certain most info wont be sent to you, but if there was some way of recording what you "saw" through code it should be pretty easy.
A great way of thinking about this and comparing this method with using FRAPS or similar software is probably a little like comparing two imaging programs, a raster program that uses pixel and a vector program that uses mathematically computed vectors. The difference is the level of detail that can be achieved, when you zoom 500% in on a raster (pixel) image you start to see the actual pixels, this is called "pixelation" but this is different with vectors, say you zoom to 500% in on a curved shape it will not pixelate! Why? Because the vector is essentially "rendered realtime".
And now my post is too long. "Ruppie ain't no puppie." |

WALL OF TEXT ALERT
Just kidding
I would honestly explode if CCP implemented this.
And to answer your question, the recorded file would indeed contain every single event that were to pass inside the grid that you're recording. Alas, only the grid events would be recorded though, so if another ship warped in, then that would get added to the list of events, but anything it did before it became visual to the player wouldn't be recorded.
By events I mean any instruction given by the player involved in the fight or scene. A ship warping out, a turret firing, a ship self-destructing, a drone attack command, recorded in a linear fashion, just like a combat log.
In fact, all this is is a glorified combat log, with positional and directional info thrown in, and for a few more objects than just your ship. These then get replayed, much like the Quake 3 demo record/playback feature you clearly were impressed by. (I've used the Half-Life 2 Source Engine's own Demo Record feature loads, and find it excellent, if a bit cranky sometimes).
But even at it's worst, Eve Online's Own Battle Recorder/Player tool would be a game-video creator's wet dream.

Edited by: Dasfry on 22/12/2008 04:59:48 I support this, it will have a huge impact on future 5 star video creations...
Example, of a video while it was being created that could have benefited from it further, although it is already a 5 star video.

With as PvP-oriented as EVE is, I'm surprised they haven't implemented this yet. Is there any technical reason it can't be done? It's not much more complicated than a logfile, as far as I can tell... |

Edited by: GoodNDead on 09/01/2009 20:33:23 those that use x-fire know when used with eve client battle recording is only a short cut key away. but also x-fire allows you to chat in text/audio in-game with others unlike other chat programs that force you to tab out to respond. you can very quickly upload screen shots to your profile page too, and now in beta you can broadcast your client in video over the interweb kinda "live battle broadcast" tool.
with both fraps and x-fire does ccp really need to spend time creating a battle recorder?
now if the recorder only recorded positions damage and movements of objects on the screen rather then full screen video that would make the file sizes much smaller. it would reduce the load on the computer compared to full screen capturing does in battle. then you could use the graphics engine to replay it back at a later time with better video settings to be transferred to avi with a different program.

This is needed badly... realy! Just a few days ago I made a video of a little fleet-ops we had. And even though 2 people were capturing the action with fraps I didnt get all the footage I would have liked to have to make the video as good as it could have been. So I realy hope CCP notices this and sees how usefull it would be to have something like this in the game. |

I would really like to see this feature.
It may be a good idea if the recorder and playback were kept separate from the eve client to decouple the new functionality from the actual game.
The recorder would in effect be a high detail logger, and the player would just be a interpreter for that log information.
CCP may have to put a caveat that recorder information could not be used as proof in a dispute. There may also be a problem caused by the recording being used by unscrupulous persons, like we saw with the abuse of the log server. These problems are not difficult to overcome.
Just a thought. If the recorder was kept in game, what if the recorder was made a module on a ship? Effectively making the ship a "camera ship", this would make any advantage gained from a recording, have a limited cost.

Not a bad idea at all separating the two parts, and disclaiming their use to resolve disputes!
I think the major problem would be that lag might show in the complex logs the recorder would create, and then people might go nuts when the differences show up there, or potentially cause problems, and then you'd get the people using those logs for disputes etc. That might be avoided by encrypting the logs, so that only CCP can read them, but the Eve client can write them of course, then no-one will edit or modify the logs to falsify their contents, and it would stop people creating fights from scratch, or building unique scenarios with the tool. As much as I hate to stifle creativity, that's not entirely a bad thing, as knowing the griefer community in Eve is the majority, I wouldn't trust them to not use it for personal gain at someone else's expense.

CCP you have to do this.
Eve has minimum network trafic which means information that have to be recorded is very very small, just give graphing engine in a small program with camera options (creating a path for the camera) and thats it. We now have productions like Clear Skies, imagine what these crazy people create with a tool like this.
And
With another expansion, give that "Battle-Player" tools to analyze a battle, like giving information for individual ships during that time frame, graphs of damage dealed, damage taken, distance to a particular ship, cap status .... then with the next tournament commentators will have stuff to talk about for days.
CCP I'm telling you this is important and pretty pretty please

tl;dr
I remember the BattleRecorder function from Battlefield 2 and how nice that was. At the end of every match, the server made a file logging every action, including player positions, weapons, directions, and every bullet fired.
Let me repeat that last one: It tracked every bullet fired.
And an half-hour-long match, complete with machine guns, tanks, planes and whatnot, was only 8-9 MB. It's not a video, rather a set of instructions to be passed to the game to recreate the battle. That way you can move around while playing back the file and film it how you want.
I would love to see CCP work out a deal with DICE for similar code.
