Right...
I was doing level 1 missions with Rifter for a few days now and finally got the rating for level 2 agent, so I bought a Rupture. Fully equipped it with best possible gear (available to my noobish skills).
And off I went to do my first level 2 mission. He gives me "The Recon (1 of 3)"; mission briefing was to check out deadspace and scout for dangers, killing pirates is optional.
Anyway I head out and warp to encounter. I see 3 pirates with 250k bounties and acceleration gate 30km away. Hmmmm 250k bounty sure is a lot more than level 1 rats gave... I try and attack one pirate but I quickly notice that they are pretty hard so I turn on afterburner and head out for acceleration gate right away...At this point I was at 50% shields. All off a sudden I get additional 5-8 pirate spawns right on top of me and they all targeted me... As soon as I see them I try to warp to safe location and before my ship was able to turn in the right direction it was already destroyed. They got me from 50% shield / 100% armor / 100% structure in a few seconds.
Well thats nice, I invest my first 10 million hard earned ISK into the best Minmatar cruiser, I buy best gear I can use and it gets totally annihilated in under 5 seconds. And on top off all my ship wasn't even insured. *sadface*
I hopped into Rifter and tried to salvage what I could from my wreck. My plan was to warp, pick up Rupture remains, warp away. But I forgot that all those pirates won't despawn. So yea, I jump right in the middle of 8-10 big pirates. And yea, my Rifter got pwned too.
Are all level 2 missions this hard or was it just bad luck? I don't see how would it be even remotely possible to do this mission in a cruiser, how can you travel 30km to gate with 10 cruiser pirates attacking you? You couldn't even survive 5km... Guess it's back to level 1 agent and farm till I have a battlecruiser.

Yea it would be nice if agent would say "RUN FOR STARGATE FOREST!!!"...
And not "Killing pirates is optional." Optional... yea right... -.-

Why would you go back into the mission with an even weaker ship when your cruiser got melted in seconds?
No, in seriousness that mission is easy if you don't engage. Get a Stabber, fit it with a 1MN ab, and zoom through the gates.

what agent gave you this mission? How do I find a "level 2" agent? I've built up alot of rep w/ Boundless creation out in Hek and still can't find a level 2 agent who gives good missions w/ a 5-10mil ISK return. Am I wrong to be looking for such an agent?

Look on the corp info under the agents tab which ones you can use/have access to.

if you ever get in another situation like this then remember this: rats will never shoot your pod. since they will not shoot your pod you have plenty of time to bookmark your own wreck. you then turn in mission as failed, the rats dissapear at turn in, you go back and salvage your wreck.

5-10mil off a lvl 2 agent? Tell me when you find one like that  I think 3-4 mil is the most you can get with lvl 2 (not counting the lucky drops of meta 4 loot)

I had the same thing with my Caracal when I got my first lvl 2 mission, also giving me the Guristas version of Recon (which is tougher then Sansha's version).
The thing is, you don't engage any of the rats there (it even says so in the objective description).
You just make a run for the gate with some speed and tank.
If you got a good ship (Battlecruiser) you can go and kill the rats and get some nice bounties.

Same for me on my Caracal also -- I'd been melting level 2's pretty well up until then, so got in this one and thought it's ouwln'd be a problem.
But yeah, everything spawned and got me when I tried to fight. Fortunately for me I was insured and so bought another Caracal and tried again, figuring I could get to the gate pretty quickly without engaging on the 2nd try.
And I was destroyed 12 km out from the gate. Yikes!
Fitted for best speed I could at the time (well before I could use an MWD) and this time made it TO the gate, but got killed while aligning.
Yeah -- 3 Caracals gone in about 30 minutes.
So a corpmate came in his CNR, jumped in 1st and drew aggro, then I came in too. we killed everything and split about 10 million overall in bounties. That was kinda nice, but I never saw cash like that again until later on doing level 3's in my Drake.
Any time since then that I've drawn Recon, I've blown through without engaging. Much easier.
Haven't lost a ship on a mission since (though there've been *many* close calls). Recon's a good "sucker punch," I'll give it that.

I did the Minmitar version of this mission in a Thorax. 10mn afterburner, 800mm plate, and 250mm rails with Tungsten charges...
Barely got away with 50% hull, but I kept going back. Orbit at 40k, and they cant touch ya back.
Eventually wore them down to nothing. Made some nice cash.
Shame about part 2 of that mission tho >.<

rupture is easy and strong if you go for armor tanking.
in missions i have only lost one due to lag the moment i jump a gate.
with rupture keep them at +20klm and lunch the drones to help out. a small lvl up in your skill will help you.
try to find out what each rats in the missions are hitting you with and change the fitting in the tanking.
with what they hit you, is whith what you should hit them

not to be roude but i have probley been doing missions all my play time exept for some 0.0 action and so but the only thing i have lost in a mission was a punisher worth 1 mil ( punisher = best amarr frigg)
i actully have done every single mission and i have never lost a ship from the time when i was a noob and runned into angel extravaganca lvl 1 so i don't think it's so bad i mean i was about 1 week old when i did it
what i wanned to say is that i really don't understand how people can loose ships in missions so to say it in my way i say it like this: It's ******* impossible to lse a ship in a mission
i'm looking for players that want a good corp!

5-10 mill is lucky for lvl 4 agents; counting bounties... of course, with loot and salvage more...

If you got your ship blown up in Recon, you didn't read the mission. The Mission info does tell you what is required.
Most people will read this thinking it's part of my post, when its actually my sig :P

I once tried to kill Lv2 Recon part 1, for the hell of it. It took 3 players in cruisers (Vexor, Maller, Omen) with drones over an hour to do it. And we had to warp out with our behinds on fire plenty of times

If I am not mistaken, it is the gas cloud that is doing most of the damage. Hence you do not want to take time to shoot the rats.

I have never had anything other then NPC/PC ships cause damage to me. When did the environment begin to be able to attack you?

Recon 3 of 3 has no rats just the gas cloud which does escalating damage on your way to the gate. 45KM if I remember right. Good tank np.

since you flew through a radioactive gas cloud?
edit: also OP, i dont even mess around with shuttles on that one, i use my pod, cuz NPC's dont attack it.
you shouldn't see anything beyond one, maybe two cruisers and some dessies and frigs in a lvl 2. that mission is set up for you to run for the next gate. in the next area there are battleships by the dozen and some warp scramble drones IIRC.

Pods can't go through gates and why use something as slow as a Pod if you can just do it in a buffer tanked ABing cruiser, hell, even a frigate might work but you need a booster.
Shuttles get instapopped the minute you arrive xD

Well in the end I managed to finish the mission with new Rifter. Second and third part were easy too.
And after I finished all three Recon parts agent was kind enough to give me another Recon (1 of 3).
