Hello, two questions that I didn't find an answer to yet:
1. Is there a way to change the transparency of a single window? The slider in Settings->General Settings changes it for all windows, but on the Test server I somehow managed to change the transparency of the market window, and now it doesn't seem to get effected anymore by the settings slider. Any ideas??
2. Is there a way to speed up the login process? I remember reading about "clearing the cache" (for stored pilot portraits for example). Where is this cache stored? I've found a directory "EVE" in "My own files", and it contains the subdirectories "capture/portraits" and "capture/Screenshots", but both of these are empty. Only the game and chat logs are stored in another subdir there, but where are the portraits and other stuff??

Found the solution for 1., I had pinned the market window, that seems to set its transparency to 100%. By using the "unpin" button (window controls) I got it back to normal. Whew :)
Still looking for the cache directory tho :)

In previous versions of eve, clearing cache gave me much faster login, but since they tweaked what data is kept for how long in the cache, I no more have perf loss over time when the game loads.
Basically, you don't need to clean your cache, the time spent checking the cache would be lost re-downloading some stuff from the server.
What you could do is cleaning the chat logs, screenshots, gamelogs (it has all, damage, warps, messages) which are not cleaned by the game on its own. I didn't clean them for ages and lately, I ran a defrag and it was as good as before.
So, the loading speed issue might not be a question of cleaning cache, did you defrag recently? -- Pocket drone carriers (tm) enthousiast !

Idk, after the last patch i did a full reinstall and knocked my login time from 90 sec to 5.
Oddly, 2 weeks after this (was over the moon still) i decided to de-frag the drive and my login went back up to 90 sec, any thoughts? ***The EVE servers and their patches*** |

Try cleaning out the relavent file in C:\WINNT\Prefetch. That folder contains hints for windows to prefetch data needed when starting a program. Normally windows is pretty good about cleaning it up on its own, but maybe that is where your problem is coming from given the connection with de-fragging.
If you want more information on this, you could try digging around Microsoft's website. Here is atleast one artical indicating that corrupt data in that folder can cause slow downs, although it is more specific to boot up, the same should apply in principle to application startup.

Cache locations:
2000/XP C:\documents and settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\CCP\EVE\client_folder_location Vista C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\CCP\EVE\client_folder_location
To answer No. 1.. no, you can "pin" it to make it transparent, but that isn't really doing what you want I assume.
For no. 2 I haven't found any real change in login speed by removing portraits; however that doesn't mean it wont work for you.. it's at least worth a try.
You may also want to look in "...\My Documents\EVE\capture\..." for more portraits ____________________________ I break things.

Thank you, will try around a bit and see if it helps with login times!
