I've seen this mentioned a lot of times, but have no idea what it really means. I assume it has something to do with remote repping, but I'm probably wrong. Can anyone explain the term please, I'm tired of guessing :)

Its when you get a load of spiders, then dress them up as army men and drive around in tanks... or something like that.

You want to fit your ships to have a good hitpoint buffer and high resists. No one should fit an armor repper or shield booster - just fit modules that give more HP or better resists.
Also its a good idea for everyone to fit an ECCM module because as already said, ECM is the bane of RR gangs.

Exactly, also, anyone who forgets to fit a DCU II derserves to be a friendly fire "incident." Remote reps in small to medium gangs are very useful and often underused. --

Actually that's turtle tanking. Spider tanking is the use of remote repair drones. Spider tanking has a greater resilience to ECM as ECM doesn't affect drones once they've engaged. ------------------------------------------------- **** You're out of your mind!

I like shigsy's version, it may be a pack of lies, but the world would be that much brighter if it wasn't

Ahh thanks all. Tbh I would feel "naked" with no repper equipped, but I guess as long as the gang works well together it wouldn't be a problem.

As mentioned, all you need is to have eccm fitted and keep range of your gang members. Add to watch list helps also if someone is shy or forgets to press "need armor" button. Works good with dominixes imo.

Domis are probably the KING of the spider tank until you move into capital class ships.
The things can pack on loads of EHP with little effort. Since they don't rely on guns to get the job done they can pile on the mods to aid in the spider tank effort. Throw in the pack of vicious sentries they can send into battle and you have a veritable doom fortress.
A small gang of remote repping BS's can be a major roadblock to roaming gangs who may not be able to muster the firepower required to breach the tanks (or enough ECM to do the job reliably). If nothing else, I'd say that nothing buys time as cheaply as a pack of spider tanked domis.

It seems to me that a geddon gang would be better at spider tanking.

5 mids = mwd/injector/eccm and then another injector/point/web pick 2
damage not dependant on high slots so 6 large rem reps up there, plate tank in lows, and then ogres to do damage

Actually, spider tanking is turtle tanking, and both remote reppers and repair drones fall into the same category.
The earliest reference to a "spider tank" I heard was this, and that was about 2 years ago. Doesn't matter what spider/turtle tanking means now to you, as it seems everybody I meet makes up their own definition anyway and tries to pass it ahead, but right there on that site, that's where the term "spider tank" originated in EVE combat. As for "turtle tank", that was just some remark an EVE-TV commentator made with reference to a spider-tank he saw in one of the battles, and some people started using that term too afterwards.
Of course, feel free to prove me wrong and show me an earlier reference to either one of those terms anywhere on the EVE forums or an EVE-rlated site.

Is it just me who have a hard time getting the turtle analogy to work for remote repping? Wouldnt a turtle be one of the animals who relies most on its own tank?

Off-topic here but...
I believe the turtle is supposed to represent the gang of ships as a whole, relying on itself whereas the spider analogy relies on "spiders" or the drones.

I believe the commentator in question was referring to the Roman "testudo formation" (testudo=turtle).

Yes, the spider tanking analogy is pretty straight forward, since it is graphically pretty similiar to a spiders web when everyone is connected to eachother, repping eachother.

And what on earth would that have to do with repairing eachother? I still can't see the analogy... Parrots, commence!

tbh i cant really see ANY friggin analogy from earth's fauna fitting into remote repping. (im quite sure there is some freaky animal that comes close...)
with my lacking knowledge id say "ant tanking" is a good analogy, since most ants share their food just by puking in each others mouth, when one is hungry (it's a bit simplified but you catch the drift).
that being said, "spider tanking" is really just overcoming arachnophobia by letting spiders crawl all over you.

Spider Tanking, so called becasue in some circumstance it looks like a spiders web,
ie. You have one guy in the middle, and then the rest of the gang around him, forming some kind of *** remote-repping 'web' with the wibbly repping graphics.
