While BSG is cool and that is a great scene to be sure it is not close to best special effects.
With no regard to anything but special effect quality the current gold standard has to be Star Wars Episode III: Battle over Coruscant.
I have a lot of issues with George Lucas and his handling of those movies but one thing is for sure...he's THE master of special effects. Practically invented the idea (certainly was the one to bootstrap them into the modern era beyond ships hanging from wires with sparklers for engines).

Firefly. Serenity Part II. When they're pursued inside the atmosphere by the Reaver ship. I always loved that scene.
Also, for it's time Babylon 5 had bloody awesome SFX. ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. It's given freely, and only grudgingly retracted when necessary. |

The big ship coming out of the cloud was the best shot in that whole movie.
The Galactica making the in atmos jump is still probably one of the best shots in terms of CG for TV yet though. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

EDIT: Oooh! A BSG space battle compilation! Fun stuff!

0:25 looks like the battle for the north pole superweapon in Stargate. 0:30-0:35 is from Starship Troopers, the intial attack on the bug planet.
As for my own suggestion. I wasn't talking about the Firefly movie. I'm talking about the series. Episode "Serenity Part II". ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. It's given freely, and only grudgingly retracted when necessary. |

I do not think that is from Starship Troopers. The bugs have nothing in space for the space ships to shoot at and the ships look a bit wrong anyway (unless it was Starship Troopers II which I turned off pretty fast). Immediately following that part is a clip from Starship Troopers so might be misleading making the two seem linked.
Thanks for the other...I thought it might be Stargate.

Oh right. 0:30-0:35 is ALSO Stargate. But it's their fight against the Ori in season 10 (in 0:32 you see a Goa'uld pyramidship). ______________________________________________ -You can never earn my respect, only lose it. It's given freely, and only grudgingly retracted when necessary. |

It starts just before with ID4, then segways to the battle over Antarctica in Season 7 of SG-1, then the Ori supergate in the Finale of Season 9. Then there's a few quick shots from Starship Troopers, along with various SW films, III and IV especially. Then a bunch of III and Serenity, and it ends with Troopers.
I BM'd it for including the best song from Akira alone.
Overall, it had some great stuff, but left out a buttload of films.
PS - Wow, I own all of them except Serenity and ID4. But I make up for it with others.

Do Europeans ever do big special effects? Not trying to be "America is better" here. Really asking. I grew up on Doctor Who and Red Dwarf (among lots of other British television) and loved them but their special effects are notoriously cheesy (although in those cases part of the charm).
Still, are epic sci-fi special effects only an American industry? I'd like to see what Europeans would do with top notch effects. Hell, European sci-fi even which seems rather rare overall (I've read Stanislav Lem...very weird but cool...movie Solaris...undecided on American version, never saw Russian version but only non-American sci-fi movie I can think of offhand).

Anyone got a link to the clip from one of the earlier seasons of BSG, where the shuttle crashes into something whilst making a landing on that planet? I've always thought that was a pretty good bit of cgi.
Yeah I can't be more specific I'm afraid... possibly 1st season (near the end)

Those Ori weapons look more like Gallente/Caldari blasters rather than lasers.

Actually I could see this battle as amarr+caldari vs jove(evil jove I guess)because according to the backstory the jove had motherships that can cut an apoc apart with one blast and extremely maneuverable small ships.
As for the caldari and amarr the pyramid ships have elcrappo shield(ie amarr)and the the human ships have great shield(caldari)and look like caldari....AND use caldari types of weapons(railguns+missiles).
Oh and lastly, the wraith seem too much like gellente(ship looks like a blob, is purple and is rather large)not to mention they have what look like blasters.

0:20-0:25 Independence day, the final assault of the aliens against the Area 51 base 0:25-0:30 Stargate SG1 (season 7 or 8 finale, memory a bit fuzzy), battle over Antarctica against Anubis' forces 0:30-0:35 Stargate SG1, somewhere in season 10, Earth+Jaffa+Asgard ships shooting Ori vessels (cut before they're shown in the picture) 0:35-0:38 Starship Troopers, the attack on bug planet Klendathu 0:38-0:40 back to the Ori vessels getting shot at in scene from 0:30-0:35 0:40-0:43 back to the Starship Troopers catastrophic Klendathu assault

that hot drop in BSG is really, really cool, there is a real sense of the power of the battlestar forging its way with brute force through the atmosphere. very well done cgi.
pre cgi the best special effects have to be blade runner. film and models folks
and that Akira track still gives me goosebumps.

Best non-CGI shot? Probably in Alien, when they go inside the ship on LV - a great sense of scale, wonderfully framed creating immersion.
Best CGI, tough to call, but might side with the composites of live-action in the battle for Zion with real actors superimposed against 'hell' in Revolutions.

The space fight scene in Empire strikes back, CGI like before they had CGI, at the time it had more moving objects in shot than any other film to date
The scene in blade runner where they approach the office building for Tyrell is awesome as well...and to then see the new DVD and see how it was done was cool
In terms of CGI (at least I assume it was CGI) there was a scene in one of the trek series or films (cant recall now) where the federation fleet makes a last stand, and then the enterprise jumps in to the wreckage of a burnt and destroyed fleet tumbling slowly through space, that was actually pretty moving.
