I don't know if this is the right place to ask such a question but here it goes. I was wondering how the game is doing in it's age? I am a new Eve player and having a lot of fun. I will most likely be playing until the game dies/falls into obscurity. In most mmos games begin to slowly lose population as time goes on. Of course, a lot of them lose so few that it'd probably be 10 years before the game dies out.
My question is this, is Eve growing in population or slowly declining? In it's age, how is Eve holding up? From my limited experience it seems Eve has the right stuff to keep players interested and playing for a very long time. As a new player it has held my interest even with how complicated it seemed at first. So how is Eve doing? :)
Another question that'll probably cause quite a bit of debate but if Eve isn't growing what do you suggest should happen that'd encourage it to grow?

Edited by: Mankirks Wife on 06/06/2008 01:25:15 Eve has been steadily growing since it launched (as you can see from that video that was linked a bit ago).
The way Eve is designed it doesn't have a lot of the problems other MMOs do (deserted zones except for the very top-level, a restrictive and time-consuming 'end-game', strict class-dictated play styles, level-segregated areas, etc), and it's the only MMO I can see continuing indefinitely as long as CCP keeps adding new things to do (such as the upcoming ambulation which I'm sure will be a base for lots of other cool new stuff in the future), and making the skill tree wider and not taller.
Eve isn't a good 'starter' MMO (it's too harsh, face it ) but for people who like the genre but want the freedom to do whatever they want Eve is second to none. It may not have spells and dragons but space is cool too

I think you really have to look at new unique players, not just accounts. It could always be that everyone is just getting a 3rd or 4th or 5th account, which isn't really the same kind of growth (the game isn't becoming more popular and advertising isn't doing anything).

I don't mean to argue or say that you're wrong but couldn't the same thing be said for any mmo? Anyway, that's pretty interesting that it's rising even this long after release. I must say, I'm impressed, as for the harshness, some new players like it. Infact, when I learned just how harsh Eve can be it made me want to try it. I've been looking for an mmo that actually makes me feel part of the universe and let's face it.. in reality danger can happen anywhere at anytime.
This is one of the things that drew me to Eve. Then when looking more into it.. the time based progression is great. In real life I'm very ill. If my illness prevents me from playing for a few days I can still be progressing during the time I'm offline. On top of that I'm a really big fan of spaceships/space based movies. This game has everything I could ever want and more.
Thank you for linking that video. I find it very interesting. I hope that eve lasts many years. Even I can tell that even with as good as it is there's still more untapped potential in this game. :)

I have to disagree with that, Eve was the first MMO that I had ever played and I am still here 2 years on and loving it. I think that people that have played other MMO's and then come to eve have a hard time as everything is totally different and their expectations differ. With being new to MMO's you can start from scratch, everything is new and you learn, rather than moan cos you can't get to level 70 and people shoot you in secure space whereas in other games you can choose a carebear server where people cant attack you.

Though I'm in the multiple account crowd I'm also a newer player. In one year I'm -10, 17mil pvp sps,and got a cap account around the corner. This game holds alot of things for industrial, market, and PvP crowds. My school buddy likes the industrial side so controls POS's for a very large alliance(one year old). I run low sec pockets and do the yar thing. This game to me is the last decent mmorg still growing and has a future. PvP in this game is a mix of a heartburn and fine art, enjoy.

Funny, I came on here to start a thread asking why EVE attendance is FALLING SO SHARPLY. EVE attendance has been climbing more or less steadily since it started but in the last two months has fallen by 15%!!! Last Sunday's peak of 36507 is only 86.4% of the March peak of 42711. The figures speak for themselves, there's no point trying to candy-coat it. Something serious has happened in MMO-land and the players are stopping playing EVE. If it continues at this rate they'll all be gone by the end of 2009! http://eve.coldfront.net/status/tranquility
What's happened? Age of Conan? Can't be WoW or PotBC. Was it just a wave of people in Q1 trying the game out, but CCP's product couldn't keep them interested?

Its is easy to see its people dumping alot of the Power of Two accounts. Personally I work construction in the summer and do black training as much as I can. Simply I like this game but I also like Gov jobs at time and half .

Eve-Online has retained its value to those who try it out because of the inherent nature of freedom in a "sandbox" style MMO. There is something very appealing to a certain number of people with regards to the amount of freedom given in Eve-Online that many other games do not give because of game mechanic issues. I believe that the freedom in this game is just as appealing as it drives some off. I believe that whether or not someone "sticks with" or "joins" this game is entirely dependent on whether or not that person enjoys the style of gameplay that Eve offers.
More people will join the game as new expansions are released as some have mentioned above; other people will join once systems like Ambulation are released -- remember, people are interested in those types of gameplay that appeal most to them. Sandbox style games keep players longer due to the instrinsic nature of "freedom". A game that has no definite "goal" or "ending" leaves room for the players to create their own goals and do everything within their power to reach them.

recession? people unable to find jobs, rampant layoffs, housing dropping in prices, many property sellers can't find a buyer, gas prices going higher and higher, food and transportation prices are going higher - and when the going gets tough people trim off entertainment first, things that aren't a necessity like accounts in mmo games for example - this amplifies the effect that it is summer in the northern hemisphere and during summer numbers also dive a bit since people start spending more time outside rather than inside at their computers

Yes we're expanding, yes we're aiming to be around for an awful long time yet, yes we're constantly thinking of ways of improving EVE.
The industry does have a something of a bad reputation for short shelf life games, hopefully we can encourage others to think that there is longevity in MMO worlds too.
Given what has been created there's an awful lot of avenues to explore yet in New Eden and the beauty of sandbox games is that the more tools that are provided, the more power players have in shaping the world around them.

2 years here, and counting :)
Eve isn't for everyone, the ones who don't make it are those who don't take the time to learn what it takes to play eve.
The best thing to do would join Eve-university and learn from them, I'm not sure if they charge, but I've heard nothing but good things about them.

No, E-U doesn't charge, unless there's been a drastic change in leadership lately. They're there to teach, and nothing else. The only restriction that I know of is that they don't accept new members while at war in order to prevent spies.

http://kotaku.com/5013865/age-of-conan-biggest-mmo-launch-since-wow
I can imagine that while a million buyers of Age Of Conan are probably eating more seriously into World Of Warcraft, there could be a few subscribers that are just not playing EVE for a while (but they could still be training long skills or whatever, just not staying logged in for a long periods at a time). Certainly enough to cause a 42,000-to-35,000 drop in peak players. CCP knows the subscriber total and that is the real indicator of whether the game is dying or not (which I am sure it is NOT).
By the way EVE is the only MMO I know that allows you to see a graph of concurrent player counts. Can't tell how many people are playing other games... I beleve CCP's openness about this sort of data will stand them in good stead for the future.

Don't forget those of us deployed too! I've got two accounts, but because I'm in Iraq, neither one has been online much over the past year+. I'm sure there are quite a few military folks who are still fans, but can't play due to other obligations, and will be back once that's done.

The drop in players is mainly because its summer mainly so less people want to play eve though also there has been some pretty big games been released AOC, GTA IV etc. Though these will only affect the population in the short term i think that this winter EVE will go above 45k people online at once if CCP dont muck it up.
