hey CCP, what the hell is wrong with you?
Just lost a ship(and somehow pod?!?) to this issue. And I know there is *zero* chance of reimbursement because your service is so poor.

Same issue still for me aswell. Bug report guy is clueless also. Giving advice like update drivers (Ive already tried like all drivers) and reduce resolution (lol?). I would once like to see someone admit that this is their fault and not some stupid driver or hardware issue. Something (and we know exactly what: gatefire) is CRASHING OUR GPU. FIX IT. ----------------------------------------- [Video] Support Barrage |

It happens both in empire and 0.0. Its not a node or lag issue or a specific gate issue. Its something about the grafic routine in gateflashes that crashes the gpu. ----------------------------------------- [Video] Support Barrage |

it happens in any space, any system, any type of gate. I'm currently in 0.0 and it's happened several times. It happened earlier in low sec, and it's happened in high sec on my alt when I was grabbing stuff.

I have a Visiontek HD3650 OC 1GB and am returning it RMA. I actually got another problem too with a DVI connector on the board that I thought my freezes were due to that till I saw this thread. I have lost 3 ships, 3 denied petitions, and I thought at first it was lag or some other problems since Dr. Watson, Minidump files did not show any specific error. In the past week it has gotten worse - going into warp, on jumps and other non combat situations. So because I am in lo sec I get back online to find myself cruising in my pod...even when there was no combat going on when I crashed...grrr...
Eve is the only game I have had problem with - running Win XP sp2 I still play Crysis, MS Flt Sim X which are DX 10 games under the latest drivers to DX9 (MS just released an update last week BTW) so with an AMD X2 4600 and 3GB of ram I have no problem playing those games even FFOW which is extremely intensive graphically. In fact before I boxed up the card I tried all those games a few rounds /flights on each game in succession to see if I could crash the old card. Even with the connector problem.
I could not crash the card...but back on Eve, doing a gate jump - I am froze mid jump, listening to fleet chat, unable to respond, use ctrl-tab, Ctrl-Alt-delete nada - so I have to manually shut down and reboot...Hoping to hell my ship and myself are intact.
I just put an old ATI X1650 PCI-3 card back in to hold me for the month it will probiley take to get a card changed out from Visiontek. I am keeping my fingers crossed this will work. FW is expensive, but it even is more expensive losing ships due to a screen freeze.

Edited by: Kephael on 24/08/2008 13:27:22 Just a note, I got an ATI 4850 recently and it runs Eve without any issues with the latest drivers. If you're thinking about upgrading perhaps look into a 4850, it's a great value for the performance it offers.

Good to know that your 4850 has no problems... Hopefully that continues to be the case.
Upgrading my video card really isn't an option right now. If anything it would be my mobo/cpu which are pretty out of date. It's such a bunch of bs, the video card is perfect for everything but eve.

Maybe the 3xx0-series of Radeons are shipped in a broken state as some Nvidia videocards recently?

1. They are only broken if you are trying to play EVE. They work for anything else.
2. A GM has already conceded that the game is sending improper api calls to the card.

Now you're talking, this information is new to me.
The weird part is why it's making only the 38X0-series of card go crashing, not older or newer Radeons.
Well, if this is the problem, then CCP should issue a Hotfix like any other developer would - Pronto.

Great news Victurus, I hope this means we are getting a fix ASAP. This seriouslly sucks as it's impossible to play the game normally right now, forcing me to read all these speed-nerf, hi-sec mission nerfing threads into the oblivion.

They certainly should, but I don't think it's how CCP rolls. I don't know if this is typical of MMO's, but any other business that provided such poor service would already be out of business.

I have this exact problem.
fortunately I was wise enough to upgrade my drivers to the latest ATI drivers; my problem went from causing my entire computer to freeze, to just causing the video card to freeze and VPU Recover kicking in.
Because my system doesn't lock forcing a restart, and the VPU recover works properly; I've not lost anything but about 20 seconds of my time each time it happens.
I did notice this: it only happens on gate fire, it doesn't have to be self-activated gate fire, anyone activating the gate has a chance to cause this issue.
It may also be tied to video memory - after a VPU recover on my machine the graphics card memory utilization goes down, not by much but enough.
I've played a myriad of other games, from WoW to Age of Empires, SimCity, etc; none of these games reproduce anything remotely similar to this problem; while it may be an issue that's partly to blame on ATI, CCP's lack of communication with it's player base over this wide spread problem warrants posting a little piece on MMORPG.com about the continued efforts to sweep this problem under the rug with complete silence.
FYI. I use the MSI branded ATI Radeon 3870 video card with my Windows XP system; all my drivers are updated, all that other hogwash. I've done everything there's possible to do to fix this issue because frankly, I had the same damn problem with my Radeon X1350 a few years ago, playing the same damn game.
What I will be doing tonight is getting together a PIX report for API calls to the DirectX engine, and submitting them in a bug report with my other detailed system information to try and point the "I dunno how to bugfix" devel team in the right direction, since it seems they're unable to do it themselves and come up with a solution.
What I'll be doing after that is getting in touch with every online news source that's ever reviwed Eve Online and suggesting they make a little followup note about this (now three years in the running) bug that they're refusing to talk about; and how well their paying customers who suffer this issue are enjoying the game because of it.
FYI, Omega drivers didn't do squat to resolve the problem. I've also been through two different motherboards, different sets of ram, different processors, different audio cards, lan cards, monitors; the only thing that remained the same was the brand of processor: AMD, and the brand of video card: ATI.
I went from an AMD Sempron 2400+ using 1GB of DDR memory on an ATI Radeon X1300 video card connected to a CRT 17 inch monitor to an AMD Athlon 64 4200+ using 2GB DDR2 with an ATI Radeon X3870 on a 22" LCD; everything else between those changed, from LAN card to what USB peripherials were hooked up to my computer.
I just know I'm going to get the "it's not our problem, it's ATI drivers" bullshit, or the "it's something you've got hooked up, something wrong with YOUR system" crap too.
I'm not saying that's impossible, I will say that if Eve Online is the only game that uncovers this bug, your programmers need to take a hint from developers that do World of Warcraft, or the thousands of other titles, and work around it!
That is all.

Have you tried playing with classic client?
I know it doesn't look as sexy, but you can do pretty much everything in the classic client to be able to play the game properly.
I am not saying it is how it should be, I am just saying, you can PVP until some solution to this is found, without getting killed at gates due to the bug all the time.

This problem existed before premium graphics came out, it has nothing to do with the textures, but the code.

If it were something so basic, we would already be playing with classic because we don't like losing ships.

CCP have shown themselves to be jerks. They would have already fixed it already if they had any intention of doing so. Does anyone think that if swordslasher can find the bad call(s), that they could find someone to write some manner of wrapper to filter them out?

I'm working on it right now, it's not exactly an easy process.
Recording information in PIX costs about a gig of disk space per 50 frames rendered when you record all of the D3D call information.
Essentially it records all of the calls made to the D3D engine and the contents of the BUFFERS; so that in PIX I can go back and re-render the frame from the raw data (like playing a fraps recorded movie, except there's no quality loss, the files are huge, and the process slows the framerates down to 1-2 frames per second)
Seeing as this bug requires a trigger that takes time, it could be awhile; but I'm working on it tonight to see if I can't capture it.
I closed down the game once after I was nearing disk capacity and the trinity engine in the game went apeshit throwing tens of thousands of exceptions in an infinite loop; it flooded my logserver and maxed out the processor before I manually killed it. Gotta love this programming.

Come on now CCP, can anyone - a programmer, a Dev, a janitor - please respond in this thread stating how this matter is being attended to?
(I've not had any of the problems decribed with my Radeon XL800, X1900 or XT1950 Pro (and I'm running Nvidia 8800 GT atm.) but that only tells that not all Radeons seems to be affected)

nono, solving the problem would be the RIGHT thing for CCP to do, or atleast let us know they've noticed the problem, but as usual instead they just sit around, push all responsibility away and go "try updating your drivers or mess with the cache configuration".

Well last night I did 65 empire autopilot jumps unattended with the logserver going just to make sure the issue is still reproduceable with no input.
Unfortunately I didn't have a repeat once during that testing period; I'd been running the game with PIX going as well and I wasn't able to capture any useful data. I also did a bunch of manual jumps and sat on the perimeter gate for an hour.
when traveling in 0.0 it's usually one out of 10 to 15 jumps that I have the problem, so I'm unsure of why it didn't trigger this time around. The only thing I can figure is that there's some sort of human interaction that contributes to the problem (moving the cursor, right clicking the screen, etc)
I'll keep logserver going and if I trigger it again I'll have a report; if I trigger it consistently I'll try and capture it with PIX.

I've found it to be very random too... probably you're right that there has to be some sort of interaction/combination of things for it to fire.
