Quite often do gates firing freeze my grafic card and screen for a few seconds before my grafic card recovers from it. So the game doesnt crash but it freezes up for 10-15 secs occasionally. I dont belive it is my grafic card because this only happens around gate fires and only happens in this game.
My pc:
CoreDuo 2.33Ghz 2xHD3870 Xfire 4Gig RAM Vista 64 bit 1280x1024 resolution
Everything cranked up on max basically.
Is this a known issue? Can it be fixed by lowering anything or updating some odd driver? I have latest drivers though... -------------------------------------- [Video] Angel of War |

Do you have AA switched on?
Radeon cards are nortoriously bad at running AA - try with it off and see if you still have problems (let us know).

Uhm where is the AA switch?? I can't see any in grafic settings. And it is has nothing to do with my card. It's more powerful then a 8800gtx and can handle x16 AA in other games just fine.

it'll probably be in the Catalyst ontrol Centre.
I didn't notice on the first read that you're running a crossfire setup - this could also be part of the issue (crossfire compatibility has been a major headache for ATI).
also, on its own, a HD3870 is slower than a G92 8800GT (who told you it's quicker?)

No I just meant that my setup, ie hd3870 in xfire, is faster then a 8800gtx and runs AA without any problems in other games.
But thanks I'll check it in ccc but it shouldn't be on at all because I havent forced the AA settings in there. Wich means if the game doesnt have an option to activate it, it shouldnt activate. I can also clearly see that AA isnt being used when I play eve. But I'll give it a shot.

I have the same video card(single 3870), and the same issue. Check your event viewer and you will find an infinite loop error.
It's a driver issue, and one which I doubt CCP or ATI will do anything to resolve. I have bug reported a petitioned this and my petitions are just closed without a reply.
The best you can do is keep complaining and hope they will fix it. There is no fix, and I have found that certain driver versions allow a VPU recover, others do not. Also if you run in windowed mode it will not vpu recover and will hard lock.

Great now CCP and ATI will play the blame game on who is supposed to fix this. Tbh CCP should because this error only occurs in this game and frankly I don't see why a game still played in 2008 shouldn't support a card like HD3870.
I don't run in windowed mode and have the newest drivers so the vpu does recover but it freezes for about 10-15 secs wich is pretty f*cking bad around gate fire in pvp.

Edited by: Dark Flare on 09/06/2008 20:21:46 I get this now, it used to only happen when I decloaked after jumping through a gate, but now gatefire is doing it too.
Sapphire 3870.
I run in a window, so hard-reset is the only way to fix it :(
I should add that it only sometimes causes the freeze, the rest of the time it's fine. Goodness knows why. Doesn't seem dependant on time since last restart, time since last client restart, jumps done etc.

I've recently gotten the same problem, but it's a little more inexplicable to me. I haven't been playing EVE long, and I've had brief "hiccups" and short half-second hangs every so often in game that seem to have nothing to do with if I set my graphics high or low - I've just sort of accepted them as one of the quirks of EVE.
When I DL'd and installed Empyerean Age and started playing, it seemed much the same at first, but abruptly, I've been getting the same kind that Lyria's getting arriving and leaving gates.
Here's my symptoms:
* EVE seems to freeze or choke for about 15s in bursts so I'm unable to do a thing for 1m to 1m 30s at gates. It seems like there's the initial freeze, then it unfreezes for a half a second (or less) and it hit by trying to update everything it couldn't while frozen, and freezes again for another 15+ seconds. Sometimes followed by a third freeze. If I stay at the gate for over a half minute or so, the game will freeze again a few times periodically.
* The mouse cursor still moves (though it will be frozen on whatever tooltip it was set to before the freeze). I can alt-tab out (though alt-tabbing back in will be frozen until EVE unfreezes).
* The sound continues and doesn't seem to have the typical "get to the end of the latest clip then repeat" though I don't think it plays any new gate pulses until EVE unfreezes.
What I'm running:
Intel Core 2 Duo @ 2.4 GHz, 2 GB RAM Windows XP SP3 GeForce 8800GTS 640MB Running ForceWare 175.16
What I've tried doing:
* Updating my ForceWare drivers. * Trying out eve-tool.exe to clear my EVE disk cache. * Clearing my EVE disk cache manually from in-game menus. * Turning down all graphics settings to the lowest (I usually run them pretty high). * Checked to make sure the disk drive I have EVE installed on (it's the same as the main windows drive) has enough "swap space" (it does - 22GB).
Anyone have any other ideas? The game runs pretty smoothly otherwise, but this gate thing is very discouraging to me - the game has abruptly turned nearly unplayable to me. |

Lyria, what PSU do you have?
Many moons ago when I upgraded a video card, I was getting all sorts of errors. At first I thought it was a bad card and I replaced it. It ended up being my PSU not being able to give it the juice it needed.
What I'm really curious about is....why do you have 2 cards in Xfire and you are only running 1280x1024? LOL.

I run xfire because I play Age of Conan on maximum settings with it. AoC with all its bugs isnt crashing my whole system. This is an EVE fucup. They need to fix it.
You know how I can be so sure it is lousy ccp programming? Because this happens ONLY in this game (a game that doesn't even use all of my pc resources) and it happens around certain events like gate fires and ships warping in on my overview. You can't blame that on anything else because it is triggered by events in this game.

Did you even read the thread? It's a driver issue which can be confirmed in the event viewer.

1. This doesnt explain why ccp is ignoring my petitions in game for weeks
2. I have tried disabling all sound all grafics, doesnt help.
3. A game that cant handle xfire of a card like hd3870? Eve living in 2001 or what? Should I get a vodoo 2 card? Get real.
4. Where can I see PSU rating?

How many even play EVE with sound? Read the thread, you are not helpful. One would not be posting if they hadn't went over such basic steps dozens of times.
It is nothing to do with xfire at all, it happens with A SINGLE 3870 as well.

PSU = Power Supply Unit, its the box in the back of your case which supplies the computer parts with the power they need, its where you plug the cord that is connected to the wall socket.
There should be a sticker on the side or back of it, you will have to open your computer to see it. Be careful tho, If you have static and touch any of the computer parts and discharge you can end up with a dead computer, so make sure to touch the chassis first to discharge. That should be enough i think... really depends tho, are you running multiple drives, hard disk drives and a lot of usb powered devices?
I google'd your gfx card and its rated to use from 80-90 watts, but reports of 110 watts per card is known. BUT.
http://www.hardwarecanucks.com/forum/hardware-canucks-reviews/4236-ati-radeon-hd3870-x2-1gb-review-14.html
In this review where a similar setup to yours is tested, 2xHD3870 the peak power usage of the cards alone were 418 watts, if EVE is similar it means you have roughly 220-240 watts for everything else hooked to your computer which I imagine should be enough. But they reccomend you have at least 850 watt PSU.

It *could* be important, yes. But in this instance, it is not.
This thread is related to a documented software issue, not any kind of problem with the PSU.
You need to check your wetware.
Originally by: Lyria Skydancer 650W PSU. Should be more then enough, right?
The wattage rating means very little, you'd need to actually go through a process of testing the PSU, but that diagnostic step is not necessary since we know it's a software issue only related to EVE, gatefires, and certain videocards.

Are these "gatefires" you speak of rendering almost the same effect that is rendered when you take hull damage and your ship starts flaring like a candle? Cause I am having trouble with that. If so, its very likely these are related issues.

Ye, I wasnt too worried about the PSU, afaik 650 watt should be pretty much even overkill for a fairly high end system like mine.

Yeah, also go start->run then type in eventvwr.msc and hit enter, go down to "system," and try to find an ATI-related error. You should be seeing the same infinite loop error that I have seen.

I got a similar reply, but they also acknowledged that there is an issue with these video cards. They did however, try to send me over to ATI.
We are making progress, we just need to keep pressing them so they will decide this issue is worth their time.

Yup now they are trying to get me to roll back drivers etc. Well Ive tried them all, none work. This is still not fixed, it only happens in this game, it only happens around gate fires and jump bridges. This is an eve issue, not ati or anything else.

Apparently this issue can be caused by mismatched or "mistimed" RAM - former is self explanitary, the latter can be down to a flaky BIOS build misidentifying the RAM.
This, and other fixes to try can be found on the link I've put in below - if you've already tried the stuff on that page then I apologise - don't flame me as I'll merely ignore it

I went through all the standard diagnostic steps, including running memtest. Including swapping out sticks or trying entirely different ram.
That was before I discovered the true nature of this issue, it is nothing other than a CCP screwup. It is not possible to reproduce this kind out issue outside of eve.

FANTASTIC some other poor sap with the same problem I have!
I recently upgraded to a 3850 (AGP). I've got an older AMD 939 dual core, so my options for upgrading my x1650 were pretty limited. The AGP based 3850 seemed to fit the bill. It runs great with everything else, except eve. I've run the ATI drivers from 8.3 through 8.6 with little difference except the newer drivers appear to be more stable. I get VPU recovered errors when I go through gates, sometimes my machine will reboot itself. I put another post up on the issue before I found this one, I'll follow up in here.

They also haven't offered a solution, or done anything to try and make me a happy customer. Shame on you, CCP. Any other business would bend over backwards to try and make their customers happy.

Well, after several days of being told to try the basic stuff I knew wouldnt work (like drivers back and forth, check gpu heat, turn sound off etc) they finally accepted the fact that it is a REAL bug after looking at the debug info I sent them. They even agreed to reimburse my shiploss because of this bug eventhough they had no evidence server side of it. Now I'm supposed to fill out a bug report. Thats it. I wonder how many months it will take them to patch this bug. ----------------------------------------- [Video] I'm a soldier, so remember the name |

If anyone else is actually able to get the logserver to work right, go ahead and submit your logs. It might help light a fire under their ass, though I have found the bughunters to be less than satisfactory.
I don't see how having unpaid volunteers as the link between customers and the devs can be a good idea.

I got it to work. Provoked the crash. Sent it in. GMs aknowleged something is wrong. I was told to fill out a bug report. Yeah, I have to fill it in myself now. Still no fix. That's weird, I had this problem while I was still on trial. It strangely just... stopped, when the trial ran out.
I'm using an ATI card myself (Sapphire X300SE - old as heck).
Though, I still get occasional freezes in combat, when there's an awful lot of pewpew going on (almost lost my Caracal to it once). I've noticed that there are freezes of about 0.3 seconds every time I drop out of warp, but that's down to my crappy card struggling most likely.

Well, if it was a generic AMD/ATI 38xx-problem, there would be loads of users complaining. Is there?

No matter how you twist logic you cant claim this is not an eve bug. It is triggered by an event in the game and can be reproduced at will. It does not happen in any other game. New or old. ----------------------------------------- [Video] I'm a soldier, so remember the name |

Well, we have different opinions, that's all. Nothing to feel sorry for, you'll get over it.
Still, you can't compare games between each other in this manner unless they're running the same game engine under the hood.

You are the one not getting it. This problem exists even with older drivers. This problem is triggered with a game mechanic and is reproducable at will. Quote: I've recently gotten the same problem, but it's a little more inexplicable to me. I haven't been playing EVE long, and I've had brief "hiccups" and short half-second hangs every so often in game that seem to have nothing to do with if I set my graphics high or low - I've just sort of accepted them as one of the quirks of EVE.
THIS SAME THING HAPPENS TO ME! And it's so very annoying.
See my thread here: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=823474

Check if you play with high cache.
I only use cache off or low, because i had those freezes as well. Seems the caching eve does is VERY ineffective and in fact is slowing things down after a long while.
PS: with cache OFF, you can get problems creating new char, so turn it back to low, to make an alt if u need one.

What school of customer service did the CCP guys study? Any other company would be bending over backwards to make their customers happy. Not only have they not fixed it, but they just close my inquiries and won't offer any kind of compensation for the time in which I have been unable to use their product/service.
Even my cable company, which I consider to have horrible service will try to make me happy if I keep at them.

The freezes you get from the cache settings are usually related to memory leaks - I used to receive these freezes too. But these ones are usually recoverable by hitting End Task on eve.exe. Unfortunately the graphics loop freeze can't be solved in this way. Thanks for suggesting something though.

my system spec :
Intel Core2Quad 3,0Ghz 6GB RAM 2xHD4850 XFire ASUS P5E Vista x64 SP1 Catalyst 8.7
before i got HD 3850 512MB Single and Catalyst 8.5
Cache Settings and HDR Settings maxed in EvE Catalyst AI : Standard FSAA/AF : Application Controlled MipMap : High Quality
Ive also recognized that AF lowers the FPS enormus... from 100+ to 25 with enabled AF with the 3850... With enabled AF there are also Lightrails during jump process... so it seems the AF mechanism is mayby one of the problems. Ive also installed the newest Intel Chipset .inf drivers etc.

I would like to see this and numerous other ATI problems fixed. Ranting to CCP, however, is a waste of time. CCP's job is to program EVE, which uses DirectX. It is not CCP's job to make ATI's drivers respond properly to standard DirectX calls. ATI's support so far of the entire HD series in general has been absolute crap, and if you own an HD card like the OP, you know this.
If you'd like to see this problem resolved, you should either call ATI's support number (which I cba to register an account on their support site just to get), or write them a nice letter.

Get a clue. It is intresting how EVERY other game is able to make proper directx calls where ATI drivers dont get infinite looped while ccp cant. You cant deny responibility from a lock up that is TRIGGERED BY A GAME EVENT. Sorry mate/ccp this is your fuc up. Fix it. Truth is that HD cards are excellent cards and there is generally nothing wrong at all with ATI drivers. Thats odd everything from my x600 to x850 to x1950xtx to HD3870 has worked without any probs through the years and I have played ALOT of games on them. You know whats funny? My card works just fine on everything else. Funny how this is not ccps fault. Please. Btw the new ATI drivers dont solve the issue.
And your bug reporting on this matter, you've complied fully to all matters requested?
Any status reports on the issue after you've done this?
BTW, ther have been ATI cards even before the ones you are mentioning.

BTW, ther have been ATI cards even before the ones you are mentioning. And your constant "everthing else/every other game works just fine", adds nothing. You can't compare games unless they're using the same Game Engine, i.e. List of Game Engines.
I'll quote myself from another thread:

I have petitioned it. I have told them EXACTLY what causes it. EXACTLY how I can reproduce the bug/freeze. I have also let their debug program run in the background to collect the debug info when the crash occurs. I have SENT them this info.
What does the GM say? Bug report it with all this info.
My question is: "Why the fuc did I give YOU all the info if youre gonna treat me as a parrot to repeat the same damn thing to another info box?"
No that is not good support. It aint. You can "feel" whatever you like. You are not the one paying 100% monthly fee and not getting a 100% game in return. mkay?

ATi has had horrible drivers for over ten years. I hate ATi drivers but I really like their image quality. If you are using the standard catalyst drivers and having issues try using the omega drivers. They tend to make for a more stable machine. Not sure if it will help but worth a shot.

It happens both in empire and 0.0. Its not a node or lag issue or a specific gate issue. Its something about the grafic routine in gateflashes that crashes the gpu. ----------------------------------------- [Video] Support Barrage |

I have a Visiontek HD3650 OC 1GB and am returning it RMA. I actually got another problem too with a DVI connector on the board that I thought my freezes were due to that till I saw this thread. I have lost 3 ships, 3 denied petitions, and I thought at first it was lag or some other problems since Dr. Watson, Minidump files did not show any specific error. In the past week it has gotten worse - going into warp, on jumps and other non combat situations. So because I am in lo sec I get back online to find myself cruising in my pod...even when there was no combat going on when I crashed...grrr...
Eve is the only game I have had problem with - running Win XP sp2 I still play Crysis, MS Flt Sim X which are DX 10 games under the latest drivers to DX9 (MS just released an update last week BTW) so with an AMD X2 4600 and 3GB of ram I have no problem playing those games even FFOW which is extremely intensive graphically. In fact before I boxed up the card I tried all those games a few rounds /flights on each game in succession to see if I could crash the old card. Even with the connector problem.
I could not crash the card...but back on Eve, doing a gate jump - I am froze mid jump, listening to fleet chat, unable to respond, use ctrl-tab, Ctrl-Alt-delete nada - so I have to manually shut down and reboot...Hoping to hell my ship and myself are intact.
I just put an old ATI X1650 PCI-3 card back in to hold me for the month it will probiley take to get a card changed out from Visiontek. I am keeping my fingers crossed this will work. FW is expensive, but it even is more expensive losing ships due to a screen freeze.

1. They are only broken if you are trying to play EVE. They work for anything else.
2. A GM has already conceded that the game is sending improper api calls to the card.

The weird part is why it's making only the 38X0-series of card go crashing, not older or newer Radeons.

I have this exact problem.
fortunately I was wise enough to upgrade my drivers to the latest ATI drivers; my problem went from causing my entire computer to freeze, to just causing the video card to freeze and VPU Recover kicking in.
Because my system doesn't lock forcing a restart, and the VPU recover works properly; I've not lost anything but about 20 seconds of my time each time it happens.
I did notice this: it only happens on gate fire, it doesn't have to be self-activated gate fire, anyone activating the gate has a chance to cause this issue.
It may also be tied to video memory - after a VPU recover on my machine the graphics card memory utilization goes down, not by much but enough.
I've played a myriad of other games, from WoW to Age of Empires, SimCity, etc; none of these games reproduce anything remotely similar to this problem; while it may be an issue that's partly to blame on ATI, CCP's lack of communication with it's player base over this wide spread problem warrants posting a little piece on MMORPG.com about the continued efforts to sweep this problem under the rug with complete silence.
FYI. I use the MSI branded ATI Radeon 3870 video card with my Windows XP system; all my drivers are updated, all that other hogwash. I've done everything there's possible to do to fix this issue because frankly, I had the same damn problem with my Radeon X1350 a few years ago, playing the same damn game.
What I will be doing tonight is getting together a PIX report for API calls to the DirectX engine, and submitting them in a bug report with my other detailed system information to try and point the "I dunno how to bugfix" devel team in the right direction, since it seems they're unable to do it themselves and come up with a solution.
What I'll be doing after that is getting in touch with every online news source that's ever reviwed Eve Online and suggesting they make a little followup note about this (now three years in the running) bug that they're refusing to talk about; and how well their paying customers who suffer this issue are enjoying the game because of it.
FYI, Omega drivers didn't do squat to resolve the problem. I've also been through two different motherboards, different sets of ram, different processors, different audio cards, lan cards, monitors; the only thing that remained the same was the brand of processor: AMD, and the brand of video card: ATI.
I went from an AMD Sempron 2400+ using 1GB of DDR memory on an ATI Radeon X1300 video card connected to a CRT 17 inch monitor to an AMD Athlon 64 4200+ using 2GB DDR2 with an ATI Radeon X3870 on a 22" LCD; everything else between those changed, from LAN card to what USB peripherials were hooked up to my computer.
I just know I'm going to get the "it's not our problem, it's ATI drivers" bullshit, or the "it's something you've got hooked up, something wrong with YOUR system" crap too.
I'm not saying that's impossible, I will say that if Eve Online is the only game that uncovers this bug, your programmers need to take a hint from developers that do World of Warcraft, or the thousands of other titles, and work around it!
That is all.

I'm working on it right now, it's not exactly an easy process.
Recording information in PIX costs about a gig of disk space per 50 frames rendered when you record all of the D3D call information.
Essentially it records all of the calls made to the D3D engine and the contents of the BUFFERS; so that in PIX I can go back and re-render the frame from the raw data (like playing a fraps recorded movie, except there's no quality loss, the files are huge, and the process slows the framerates down to 1-2 frames per second)
Seeing as this bug requires a trigger that takes time, it could be awhile; but I'm working on it tonight to see if I can't capture it.
I closed down the game once after I was nearing disk capacity and the trinity engine in the game went apeshit throwing tens of thousands of exceptions in an infinite loop; it flooded my logserver and maxed out the processor before I manually killed it. Gotta love this programming.

Well last night I did 65 empire autopilot jumps unattended with the logserver going just to make sure the issue is still reproduceable with no input.
Unfortunately I didn't have a repeat once during that testing period; I'd been running the game with PIX going as well and I wasn't able to capture any useful data. I also did a bunch of manual jumps and sat on the perimeter gate for an hour.
when traveling in 0.0 it's usually one out of 10 to 15 jumps that I have the problem, so I'm unsure of why it didn't trigger this time around. The only thing I can figure is that there's some sort of human interaction that contributes to the problem (moving the cursor, right clicking the screen, etc)
I'll keep logserver going and if I trigger it again I'll have a report; if I trigger it consistently I'll try and capture it with PIX.

The bug triggers ONLY if you actually see the gate fire. If you have your camera all the way zoomed out or if you face away from gates when they fire you won't crash.
Btw, I've been in contact with bug reporting team for weeks now. First they gave me the same old driver this driver that thing. Now when they ran out of those golden suggestions my bug report is left without answer like my petition. They need to get ****ing working on this, they cant shove this on ATI or hardware. hmm strange. Well an easy way to passively provoke this bug is to just sit at a busy gate in high sec and look at the gate. You dont need to jump yourself to freeze. So try sitting at a gate faced away from the gate fire a while and see if it happens or not. ----------------------------------------- [Video] Support Barrage |

Just wanted to point out that, though I appreciate the difficulty of the situation, you've effectively antagonized every single person that's come in this thread with advice. That doesn't bode well for finding a solution to your problem. Stop acting like a spoiled brat.

Everyone gets what they deserve.
1. Person comes in the thread and asks us to do totally irrelevant changes or stuff we already have tried weeks ago and tries to make us look stupid when it is actually not our fault at all but it is ccps problem.
2. CCP has been ignoring us. GMs sent me to bug report team after a few weeks, bug report team gave up and arent answering anymore after another few weeks of contact. Now if they treat their customer like crap, Im will address them accoringly in this thread.

I make absolutely no judgments on your situation with CCP. However, cannibalizing anyone (and everyone, for that matter) that comes in here and tries to help you isn't going to get the problem fixed. By the time I skimmed over the first two pages, I wasn't even interested in helping you any more because of your snotty attitude.

This is how you get things done. I don't care what kind of attitude people have towards being treated poorly in your communist-****suck reality. If you prefer to roll over and take it while nothing is ever done, great for you.
I didn't buy EVE at the "unreliable crashing games" store, and I don't pay the "gatefire crash" discount for a sub.
I am ENTITLED to a better product, and better customer service, period.
Now, if our little pinko troll is done- has anyone had enough time to play with the new patch to see if there is any change? I have not had the issue, but I have also not have played long enough to see if it will occur.

Sounds like something more than the issue we are experiencing. You also have an ATI 38xx card?
Also, your CPU use should be 100% when playing a game such as EVE(for a single core at least).

Still, your problems appear different than the rest of the bunch with the particular Radeon 3X80-cards.
CPU usage of 100 % seems way to much, even for a single core unit. Initially, during game startup, this may be happening. But logged in and playing the game this is not normal. If memory serves me right, I did not have any CPU usage issues with this or similar CPU and a range of Radeon cards from XL800 to X1950 Pro.

no, no progess. I have had some luck with staying zoomed out all the way. I have no confidence that CCP will fix this. I might end up getting a new video card, which I card really afford/should not need. I've been meaning to upgrade my mobo/cpu/memory which are quite a bit more worthy of display in the Smithsonian. Can't afford both.

I *touches wood frantically* don't seem to have suffered a complete crash since I upgraded to the newest Catalyst Drivers (8-8).
It could just be luck, it could be that they're better at VPU recovering. Who knows. But it's something for anyone who hasn't updated yet to try - hope it helps.

Edited by: VicturusTeSaluto on 15/09/2008 23:39:05 So I bit the bullet and got a really good deal on an upgrade, decided to get new mobo/cpu/memory and hope everything works out. It's been a few days and so far, so good...
I got:
Phenom 9850 BE Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2H 2x2GB DDR2 Kingston HyperX
The rest of my hardware is the same, including videocard. Now while I can't say I've had enough playtime to confirm that I'm no longer having the issue- I haven't had it yet. So hopefully(for me) and possibly this is only occurring with certain chipsets or such? Or is anyone with issues using a mobo with PCI-E 2.0?
It's too bad that only such a small amount of the players will ever read this thread. If there were people with hardware that worked out with this card, we wouldn't ever hear about it.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed, would like to be able to use some nice stuff without near complete certainty of losing it to a technical issue.

Do you have any reasoning behind this leap?
All I see in this article is shitty card makers making shitty cards. No surprise there. Every Sapphire card I've ever had has failed prematurely and I doubt the other mentioned brand is any better. Also, never buy Sapphire- their customer service is ran in china and they will most likely NOT let you RMA the card even when it fails under "warranty"
You posted an article about broad failures with specific brands of card. Not all 38xx cards.
The cards aren't defective. They work under far more demanding conditions. They work with everything but EVE. They work fine in EVE except around gates. It is the code.

got a little bit help - maybe - or i imagine that :) i have turned all effects off (turret, missile, ...) and set cache size to "off". now i can travel distances about 5-7 jumps without gate freezes. but then it freezes again. but better then freeze at every or every secound gate. BUT this is not the final solution!
eve is almost unplayable for a lot of PAYING customers! - not only this bug. island people up your buttoms. don't use our money for useless things like fanfests or empyrian-faction-warfare-grap-contant-updates. simply get the game running! please fix this, or can with have our money back? :) it's like i am going to the fuel station, and only water came out of the pump! or maybe unsatisfied ccp custumers should do a really big lament. maybe at a american court? million dollars for every not done but payed work... just joking, or? welcome to the service desert mmorpg! fix it please.

Honestly, are you working for ccp?
How do you explain that BOTH my HD3870 cards are not working with eve but with ALL, let me repeat ALL, other games on max settings. How the heck do you explain that a game mechanic in eve triggers this. Have you any knowlege of computers? EVERYTHING points to eve code making these cards crash. Oh and if you read closer there are people that dont have 38 series that are also experiencing the SAME problem. You cant shove this away. Stop posting nonsense that doesnt help.

I'm having the same issue and am somewhat relieved to find its not an isolated problem! I've had intermittent issues ever since having my HD 3870 x2. I've tried multiple cards with and without crossfire enabled and still have the same problems with eve (and not with any other application/game).
I can't say my experience is linked specifically to gate fire events but can't rule that out (I just haven't associated the two). What I have noticed is that as I have upgraded drivers from the set that was shipped to the current Catalysy 8.9 version, is that the behaviour of the defect is different:
Originally the display driver seemed to fail, with the screen going black and the card fans going to 100%. Windows (Vista 32) would still run fine and I could talk on TS, but had to reboot for the display to recover.
Subsequently (after a few driver updates), the problem was more that the driver would fail for up to 2-3 minutes with the screen going white/black before "recovering from a serious error". I could still alt+tab to other applications in the background, while eve was waiting to recover. Occasionally the screen would go black and the fans up to full duty, but much less frequently than before.
Now with 8.9, I still have the occasional crash to black with fans going mental, but the main symptom is the game locks up completely and I lose all control in windows, needing to reboot the machine to recover. The fault seems completely non-deterministic though, sometimes I can run eve for 4-5 hours without a single issue (even with 3 instances of eve running on the same machine), and other times I can have 5-6 crashes in one hour with 1 client running. In all cases the only applications running are eve and TS.
Does this sound similar to anyone else experience?

Yes all that sounds familiar to alot of us and its pathetic that a huge bug like this hasnt been confirmed officially as known bugs. |

I think this is what they are hoping for; That HD3870s will age and people will forget about this issue. Well I'm not forgetting it. Worthless crap programmers and bug hunting team that does nothing but ignore issues served on a plate. I've given them several pages of info, debug logs, everything. I mean cmon, atleast say if you are ACTUALLY working on it or just say "sorry not enough of the customers are affected by our bug so we are not putting money into fixing it and we hope you'll just get a new card instead". ffs. ----------------------------------------- [Video] Support Barrage |

Well in that case it might take longer than they intended considering I got the EXACT same problem with my brand new Club3d Radeon 4870 OC Edition.

the one thing i'd add is that sometimes its just my client that crashes and i can close it, but if i try to open ie or eve or explorer my system freezes immediately.

Still no response from CCP? Waiting for HD3870 to age is ridiculous, although they have just been superceded by a new model, the cards themselves are still virtually new to market. It's shameful that CCP have not acknowledged this issue and given an explanation to customers.
Flying around in 0.0 with an ATI 3870 (and it seems the 48xx class) is a complete deathtrap. Rebooting and hoping you are still alive when you log back in is such a regular occurance, and has been he cause of so many lost ships that I've had to take the cards out of my new pc and use a 2 year old nvidia card.

Hey dunno if this helps but check if your problem isn't related to a memory address issue.
Some crossfire / sli cards usually have that problem and it can be solved either by client or driver patching. _____________________________________

* Acknowledge the issue. * Explain their findings to-date. * Suggest temporary workarounds (if any). * Confirm an expected fix-date for this defect.

Had a very simular problem tried the new sound/video drivers, fresh OS install etc. finally resolved by loading the Register 55 fix (look it up) Basicly some CPU/MB/vid card combo's trigger a vid crash when Register 55 is locked open - this was a problem with some games back in '02/'03 which ATI/Nv issued fixes for - there has been a recent suggestion the as the OS and MB tech has moved on the fix has been dropped from recent drivers - not sure if its accurate just know it fixed it for me...............

Me too, as per Lyria for several months. One way to work around it is to never see gate flashes - fly betweens systems in map mode. I've been doing that for a few months (obviously I never gatecamp) and it's fine.
XP SP3 AMD X2 3800+ Powercolor Radeon AGP 3850
I've tried several drivers, sound, etc. No problems in other games, ever. Happens roughly 1 in 10 gateflashes, no difference between premium / classic, no difference with all effects on / off and it only occurs when you see (or would see) a gateflash. Render depth and stencil settings do not fix it. Forced AA off doesn't fix it.
I'll keep bumping this thread until it's fixed. It's not a driver issue. It's a CCP issue. I have never had this card crash playing any other game including games that use cards strangely (eg. Doom 3).

Nice, were you actually using a 38xx card and having the gatefire issue as described? There are a ton of people in here describing completely separate issues.
If so, this could be promising for anyone still having the actual issue. Anyone tried it?

I have nearly the same system (better CPU) and a HIS AGP 3850. I get it on gate fires as well. Card runs GREAT on all other games in XP with no issues except in EVE. Good thing I've got a Mac, which runs the client nearly flawlessly. In the meantime, I've shoved my ATI X1650 back in (YUCK) which exhibits no issues.

Edited by: michelle lavite on 13/11/2008 16:22:15 Just tried Quantum rise and I can report that it is working with my ATI X3850 AGP graphics card. I've gone through 30 gates so far and no lockups or problems. I did remove ALL drivers and reloaded the latest version I could find. It looks like they may have tweaked the way gate jumps work to slow them down or reorder the unloading/loading of 3D objects. I don't care as long as it works. I'll keep playing this version and report if I have any more problems, but for now ALL IS GOOD!
I should add, I've run premium, regular, changed cache values etc, but I am NOT running HDR or bloom, just shadows on premium on the moment. Still no problems.

My 4870 kept crashing minutes after I logged in. I solved this by returning the card and buying a GTX280. Last ATI card I had was the 9800 pro which had problems with overheating. I heard so many good things about the 4870, plus the price, that I thought I'd give ATI another chance. Guess I'll wait another good 5 years before I do that again.

Edited by: michelle lavite on 15/11/2008 17:59:45 Hmm, looks like I may have spoken too soon. I'm back on premium and I have had a few "lockups" on gate fires. It's much better and seems to resolve itself, but I can't say the problem is really gone since I've seen it 4 times today. I'm going to switch back to UGLY mode and see if it happens in there.
One side note, I did bump the cache from OFF to HIGH (I've got memory to burn) and that's when the trouble started.
EDIT: First things first, I've just shut the cache off. After that I'll try UGLY mode (non-premium GFX).

I've reported it a few times but it just falls on deaf ears as it seems CCP doesn't use ATI cards so cannot reproduce it, the one time they did reproduce it the testers machine got upgraded and it stopped happening to him so they stopped bothering about it and closed the report.

Good to know I'm not the only one with this issue... They blamed it on the cache in my case... I mean... I get the hang ups like EVERYONE else (I have a 3870), and there is a giant gaping memory hole which no one seems to notice (I can leave my ship docked and not touch my computer for less than 1 hour, and the game's RAM usage still doubles from when it was started)... I love this game, but the ignorance of the fact that things are broken and have been for a long time is... Well, juvenile and stupid come to mind.

If you read through that entire thread that you linked (and yes, I read the majority of it, it's ****ing huge) and follow a couple of the links (ATI bug reports, NVidia complaints) it's clear that it's a Vista problem.
Here's the problem with that statement - I can play all of my other games flawlessly on Vista. Team Fortress 2 runs for 6+ hours with no lockups. Left 4 Dead runs for hours on end, no lockups. Fallout 3, no crashes other than the ones caused by Bethesda's ****ty programming. I can leave guildwars running for days at a time, no issues. The Witcher, no problems. X3 Reunion, no graphics issues.
I could list off a dozen more games that work flawlessly. EVE is the only game that locks up my machine and only when I'm near a stargate or changing sessions.
So no this isn't just an ATI issue, it's clearly an EVE issue as well.

How about this? I bet it doesn't work because your source is full of clueless nublets. It won't work just like the gazillion other standard solutions like clear cache, resinstall game, update drivers.
This is a eve problem and you cannot convince anyone of anything else when it is a game mechanic, gate fire, that is activating the problem EVERYTIME and ONLY in this game. I can play cod4, cod2, bf2, bf2142, age of conan, witcher, medieval2, pirates of the burning sea, wow without any problems whatsover. They NEVER EVER crash. Many of those are very new games and even dx10.1. Don't come and tell me this isn't eve's problem. It is crappy ccp programming and it is time they admitted it and fixed it. ----------------------------------------- [Video] The Cruise |

Id like to add myself to this list.
Athlon 3000 8600gt 128 sli driver version 7516
I do have a second video card in the machine but i tend to leave it disabled. i only use it for running the second monitor. which halves my sli bus.
The problem is a strange one. it only occurs when i am coming out of warp on to a gate. once out of warp the game crashes. randomly, as in not every time. the only common theme is the camera is close to the ship.
my workaround seems to work fairly well. stay zoomed out. this problem only started occuring with the recent expansion. _____________________________________________

it would be nice if you could turn off the gate fire graphics as an effect. Probably stop the issue and I imagine make fleet fights on gates less likely to lag.
tbh tho its not a card load problem afaik. I was in a 1000 man fight that was on a gate that was constantly firing and had no problems at all. Once the inevitable happened and i had to fly a few jumps to gate back in it in a new ship i had the issue in a system with 4 in it. Odd.

If you're zoomed out in a fleet fight you don't see the gate flash and therefor don't crash. If you have max zoom out you NEVER EVER crash around gates. There is a grafic command that is being used for the gate fire flash that is causing the gpu to crash obviously. ----------------------------------------- [Video] The Cruise |

Edited by: michelle lavite on 30/11/2008 15:41:29 Edited by: michelle lavite on 30/11/2008 15:39:30 Well it did seem to get a little better but with the latest patch 1.0.2 it has all come back. I had multiple lags/lockups last night while traversing systems. I've filed a fresh petition. Hopefully someone will figure this one out.
I agree with the zoom out "fix". It seems to work for me as well, but it kinda defeats the purpose of having a graphics card when you can't see anything. I might as well play be playing the text version of Eve-Online.
It is interesting that people claim this is a driver issue and not a CCP issue. Since I only have problems with Eve and no other 3D games, I think it is of CCP's concern. How about an option to turn off gate fire effects in the GPU settings. Would this not "solve" my problem?

Originally by: michelle lavite Filed a new petition with CCP. I got a response to update the audio and video drivers as the combination might be causing the problem. In my case I've already tried just about everything with 6 ATI driver versions under my belt. I thought I would post it as others might find it useful.

Tbh it's irrelevant who they work more closely with. This is such a critical bug that anyone who experiences it is literally unable to play! Try PVP or 0.0 travel when your whole machine locks up (requiring a reboot!) non-deterministically on gate fires. This has been repeatedly reported to CCP and not even a single response in this thread to even acknowledge or put a timeframe on a fix. This isn't an issue for some quirky card that only 1 or 2 people use, it's for some of the most prevalent graphics cards in the market at the moment.
I couldn't care less about the nvidia vs. api debate, it's not relevant.

WOW! QR 1.0.3 seems to have made this much worse. I can't fly through 4 gates without it freezing up. Sure it comes back, but it's black while it does. It usually lasts about 20 seconds. Extra Scary since I'm in FW and fly through contested space.

The CSM, perhaps talking to one of the current representatives or posting a thread in the Assembly Hall.
For Internal Affairs email [email protected], but I'd probably only consider getting in touch with them if you really think that there is malicious intent behind ignoring the ATI graphics problems.
But before doing any of that you might want to consider dropping by SiSi and seeing if you can catch the attention of one of the devs there.

I'll be quite happy with option to disable gate firing. It is not a solution though, but at least no freezes and crashes.
Now I have to zoom out all the time I jump, and it is cool my PC doesnt freeze when someone else jumps.

However until I upgraded my Graphics card 12 months ago from an old ati x700 I had no problems. My sons Dell runs an ati x600 card and is also stable. (with low graphic settings) I find that if I am chatting (typing) at the gate it happens far more regular. I play with my sound off and I have two accounts, one premium one standard which makes no differance as it occurs about the same amount of times on each. Though I rarely happen fly both accounts at the same time and my 2nd is just a few weeks old If I am not chatting or on auto pilot (shuttle) I rarely see the freeze, but it is an infinite loop error as has been said already in this topic. If I need to go through lowsec I have to wait until my sons PC is not being used, I cannot afford to run the risk of lowsec when this could hit at any random time.
PITA I find it to be.

While I agree with you, at least it is now agreed by CCP that there is a bug, and as such should be fixed hopefully soon. I may have a work around though until that fix happens. I play with no sound anyway, but I have noticed on my long freighter hauls that if I use the chat box, cargo box, Assets box and overview (all unpined) to cover 75% of my veiwable screen, as well as transparency set all the way to the right on the [ESC] menu it means I see no gate flash and have only had a freeze/bluescreen memory dump twice in over 100 jumps. This is 10 to 20 times better than I have had for longer than I care to remember, see above post of mine. Try it, I dont use the main view for anything other than Eye candy anyway, so it is little loss to me and you can arrange other windows to create the same effectif your not hauling your assets. For instance pull the overveiw over more and add a few more colunms for PVP. Sure you get the idea :)

Forget what I said in my earlier post, I must have had a good run as just recently I have had a system freeze several times. I had meant to post this yesterday. Our Corp is seriously thinking thinking of making a move and I fear I will not be able to follow as the risk of this happenning in lowsec/nullsec can and most likely will prove expensive. it takes around 200 seconds to reset my machine and get back online, and then I have the very unpleasant prospect of warping back to the gate with Reds in system due to the emergeancy warp after disconection. Please for the love of God can CCP respond with a patch that fixes this issue

You'll likely need to wait until Apocrypha is on SiSi before you can see whether or not the devs have put any effort into fixing this.
We might not see a fix at all. Why? Since this has been an ignored problem for over 7 months now and ccp has at best given us indirect advice to just chance gpu as a solution. They don't want to fix it and they want this problem to just fade away with time. I'm leaving eve with both my accounts for better games with better customer service. |

Do you suppose that heat is an issue or at least part of the problem? Experiencing pain when touching your finger to the heat sink is a good indicator of heat problems.
I'm running dual 3870s in crossfire mode. My primary card recently started having heat issues. To resolve this I've removed my piece of junk Creative Labs X-Fi Extreme Audio PCI-E card which sat in front of the GPU fan. I'll likely replace the full-height card with a low profile Asus Xonar DX unless the Auzentech X-Fi™ Forte 7.1 suddenly shows up with ALSA support for linux. |

No it's not a heat issue. Why?
1. It only happens in eve 2. I can play any other game 10 hours straight without any problems with heat 3. My gpu is not hot 4. The freeze is triggered by an in game event, gate-fire
So no, it is not heat.

Yup, it's quite sad. The performance of a game this developed crashing on high end computers like ours. Where classic mode with all sound and graphics shut off still give you big fat freeze. GJ ccp, hire some more of those daft programmers you got working for you, they sure do a good job at screwing us over.

I know I've said it before but for me it is clearly gate fire that causes it. I just jumped 20 times with no issues since I am zoomed all the way out from the ship. Since the gatefire doesn't occur at this distance, I have no issues. Of course I might as well play with no graphics as I can't see anything.

Once again, CCP has said that the March 10 expansion should have a new effects system. With that information, it can be deduced that CCP are not going to spend development resources to fix an issue in the old effects system. I'm pretty sure there won't be any client graphics changes at all before March 10, as there is nothing that completely breaks the game for a large number of players - large being defined as several thousand, not a few dozen as is probably the case with this issue. This opinion is reinforced by CCP's past history of very slow action to fix graphical glitches
The Premium Lite and particle effect changes may fix your problem, but there's no way of knowing for sure until they turn up on SiSi. Until then, though, I suspect that you're going to have to be patient.
Bumping this thread daily will accomplish nothing but feeding your collective resentment, with a side order of potential forum warnings and the possible locking of this thread as being no longer constructive.

And I can clearly see what you are saying, and I do agree to a great extent, but this has been ongoing for 8 months now, I am forced to play in the map mode while traveling around so there is no gate fire, you try it and see if you enjoy it, for 8 months. Patient you say, put the boot on the other foot and think about 8 months of patience and maybe you can see it wearing a little thin. I am really hopeing that the next expansion sorts this out, but then I and we, was really hoping the last dozen patches were also going to sort it out. I'm just tired of it as are all of us.

Who knows how many others have tried the game, experienced the issue and given up on it.
However, I disagree with your assessment of this thread. This thread has numerous attempts to solve the problem and was instrumental in tracking it down to gate fires. Keep in mind that there were several other ATI GPU problem oriented threads (I opened one) that have now funneled into this one master thread. As for forum threats, I hope CCP doesn't resort to that kind of hide the bug mentality of other developers. Only by having an open discourse with users can they hope to put off a fix like this for 8 months and keep people playing the game. Who knows how many new users or GPU upgrade users end up reading this thread and sticking with it knowing that the issue has been reported and that there is light at the end of the tunnel even if we can't see it yet.
At this point all we really need is a button on the Graphics Configuration panel similar to the option that they added for drones that just disables the gate fire effect. To me that shouldn't require a rewrite of the graphics system to accomplish, but then again, it's not my code. |

Ive had a similar problem with my HD4850, cept my EVE clients would chrash at complete random, i however have fixed the problem with a few changes in control panel.
You can find my post here: http://oldforums.eveonline.com/?a=topic&threadID=975450
Maybe give it a try, im not sure if will help any of you or not but its worth a try right? --------------------------

I tried the settings listed in this thread.

It did seem to lower the frequency of the issue, but I'm still getting it. I went through 10 gate jumps with no issues and I was ready to call it a victory, and then it happened. |

Its a bug, only happens at gate flash and if you read the whole topic you would know this. the fixes you suggest have been discussed before, they do not work. However I have read your thread and see that you have been fine for the last few days of game play, is this a coincidence, I have not changd my settings to what you suggest but have also had 3 days of uninterupted play. That was untill this evening when for no apparent reason VPU recover saved me from a crash a dozen times and I blue screened memory dump 3 times in under an hour. All this on the exact same system and system settings as I have been using for the previous 3 days, Puzzles.
and I take it Chrash means Crash?

I get a black screen and game closure at least 3 times a night.
I manually turned off all AA, and set card to performance settings all around. (for those who don't know how, simply go to the 3D tab in your CCC) Game crashes in both classic and full-on premium.
Card has no problem handling the game at full, though HDR increases occurences of black screening. Problems occur in random spots, with and without brackets, zoomed in or out.
Memory used isn't more than .9GBs at any given time.

problems mostly happen in Eve because, by default, Eve's graphics engine does not limit the framerate (which, in turn is not usually limited by your processor like it is in most games) so a LOT of data is sent to your graphics card making it work very hard.
The "workaround" for this is to set the "Present Interval" setting in the graphics options to "Interval One" - this limits the redraw rate to the refresh rate of your monitor, resulting in less work for your GPU.
Poorly built graphics cards are the most likely reason that so many people have problems and I'm willing to bet that the people having problems have cards made by a limited number of manufacturers (card manufacturers like EVGA, Sapphire etc, not chipset like nVidia or ATI) |

I really though you were more on top of it than this. You can't tell what was upgraded or swapped out. For example, this entire thread is about ATI 38XX and 48XX series cards. My guess is the that guy went to Nvidia and hasn't looked back since. I absolutely agree that it is a CCP issue as it is something that occurs on multiple versions of the ATI driver set but only on gate fire and only on 38XX and 48XX series cards. Please stick to offering sound advice as you did 2 posts later instead of trolling. For some of us, this is a big issue that seriously impacts our gameplay. AS for your suggestion, I'm going to give it a try later tonight. Thanks.

Edited by: Elysarian on 26/01/2009 21:15:52 I agree that there does appear to be issues for some people and not just on ATI, current nVidia drivers are also causing issues...
However, due to the nature of PC's (i.e graphics cards from different manufacturers having differing components to name just one) I feel that maybe there needs to be a "debug" mode put into the next update if it's such a big problem?
That way relevant information can be gathered (though the debug code in itself will likely add some lag to the client) and sent to the chipset manufacturers for further investigation (or if it turns out to be a bug in the Eve code, to CCP.
Sorry if my post seemed trollish in any way but you kinda clarified what I was trying to say by pointing out that the person who cured the issue may not be using ATI anymore - that it could be ATI's issue, not CCP's.
It would be ridiculous to suggest to those who have spent money on ATI cards all switch to nVidia just so they can play Eve.
It is going to take time and CCP communicating with both the ATI users and ATI themselves to get to the root of this issue and I'm happy to assist by keeping this thread visible.
Edit: (only thought of this after I posted) Does the Eve client communicate at driver-level or though DirectX? if the latter then it's definately a driver issue, if the former it is more likely an Eve issue. As for "why only Eve?" - Possible that there's an issue ony with certain function calls that other games do not use or have found workarounds for.

Well, tbh, a LOT of people are having this same problem. It takes VISTA and a nice graphics card to cause the problem. http://www.repairyourpcnow.com/resources/atikmdag-has-stopped-responding.php
Even new computers are suffering: http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/18818116.aspx?PageIndex=14
I do not advocate any of the "workarounds" in the above linkage. But, it should show the problem isn't strictly an Eve-Online issue. It appears to have surfaced when VISTA came out.

Not sure about the Vista bit you say, as I found it started once Premium came out, although it does it in both premium and classic but did not in my memory before that. Also as I stated before, my old ATI X700 card works just fine, (although tuned down some) but my newer HD2600 ATI card is what I upgraded to to play the premium, (Cheap I know) and have had problems ever since with Gate flash crashes. I stay ATI for the simple reason that I run with AMD and they seem to go hand in hand.

Thanks for these links. I'm not sure it is the same problem as mentioned in these posts simply because I have no other problems with ANY other game on the computer. What I am willing to do however, is buy a new hard drive and do a complete reinstall of the OS (XP in my case), a fresh eve-online only version. If after that it still doesn't run reliably I have no choice but to conclude that it is an eve SW "slash" ATI driver issue that cannot be fixed. In the process of trying to fix this bug, I have replaced a perfectly fine functioning power supply, all my system memory and CPU. I suppose I could toss the motherboard, but at that point the only original thing I'll have left is my case.
As most of the ATI boards (including mine) are based on the reference design there isn't much possibility that manufacturing design errors have caused the issue. There could however be a bad batch of GPU memory I suppose.

Could also be a bad batch of any of the other components on the card (especially the capacitors).
As I've pointed out in the past: Though Eve is not as graphically intensive as other games (E.g. Far Cry 2, Crysis etc) it does have a habit of stressing gfx cards due to there being no limitation on how much data it sends to the GPU.
The fix for overheating works for some people but not all, this thread has been running long enough now that I assume everyone posting/reading has tried setting the "Present Interval" value in the esc menus to "Interval One". |

You are really odd. You don't know what you are talking about, and you have no stake/interest in this topic. What are you doing here?
The game is sending bad api calls to the card during the gatefire, plain and simple. This is an eve-specific problem particular to a single piece of hardware. |

To anyone running Vista- when the game crashes, or you force quit, make sure you "check online for solutions." If you do this you'll send a small crashdump to micro$oft which is then forwarded to CCP (since CCP now subscribes to this service), spam them with crashdumps early and often .

I had this issue upon a new re-installation of my computer. I thought it may be updated drivers and I would roll them back. But no. I adjusted my AA settings on my ATI 4870 from 4x 8x to 4x 6x and it crashed all the time, gatefire or no. Every minute at least it would crash.
I set my AA to 4x 12x with edge detect. No flaws or crashes as of yet. Been going on 20 minutes and several gatejumps. I hope this helps. |

1. I may have no "stake" as you rightly point out (not running ATI here) butI do know what I'm talking about.
2. Are you absolutely sure that every person with this specific card is experiencing this problem?
3. I have an interest because I'm part of the same community as you are, I have no enemies here and like to help people where I can.
I agree that it is weird that this appears to be limited to one card/series, the fact that other series/models are not affected (usually with the same drivers) would indicate to me that ths is an ATI/AMD issue more than a CCP one.
Maybe there is a fundematal issue with this specific card? maybe all you with this issue have the same BIOS revision on your cards and there's a bug in there that's only triggered by the gate firing animation?

I have an ATI 4870X2, and the game regularly just freezes and takes windows with it in the process. And I don't even mean in gatecamps. I mean just sitting in station doing absolutely nothing. Flying to gates where more than 5 people are around it and gatefire, will usually result in a LONG waiting time (like 20-30 seconds), before I can finally do something. It's really weird and seems like something is just stuck in an infinite loop. Also starting 2 clients in windowed mode will 100% freeze up everything. Why do I have 2 accounts again? This is with the newest catalyst drivers, I had the feeling it worked a little bit better with the previous version. If this continues like this, I'll have to get either a new card (unlikely since this one is pretty new and works perfectly with all other games), or just ditch the game until I feel like upgrading graphics again. Either way, I can't play seriously like that, and I'm really frustrated and amazed that CCP didn't even bother to answer this thread even ONCE. Come on, what the hell? |

As a test... is there any way you can disable Xfire in the CCC? - just to determine whether your issue is actually with the (reportedly) flaky Xfire support in the Catalyst drivers (and Eve)?

I had a really bad time with the 9.1 drivers, all of my games started crashing once I installed them. I rolled back to 8.11 and the crashes stopped.
I did some reading and found that a bunch of other people are having similar issues on vista, and a subset of those people are reporting resolution of the crashes with 9.1 by not installing CCC. Since I already use ati tray tools I figured I'd give it a go. I used the catalyst installer to remove all related software (driver, CCC, etc..) and then installed the driver only. It's been stable all day, no crashes as of yet.
FYI, I'm running in fullscreen mode.

yea.. seems like to me, CCP doesn't give a damn about ATI users anymore. i know their techies have a bit of an unhealthy bias towards nvidia. (remember the NVIDIA guy they invited to speak at fanfest?) I have lots of graphical issues on sisi. stations look like glowing white clouds (no better way to describe it really), and if I warp to an asteroid belt the whole screen turns grey unless i zoom out so far that i don't see much of anything anymore. well it's sisi so they (hopefully) will fix at least those issues..

Edited by: Molly Mayhem on 15/02/2009 13:26:15 Everyone who has an ATI card that's crashing at gates should go here: http://support.ati.com/ics/survey/survey.asp?deptID=894&surveyID=486&type=web and submit a ticket to ATI, it might get them to look at this.
I narrowed it down to forced AA on my machine. If I leave AA set at "application settings" then I don't crash at gates, ever. If I set forced AA of any kind I'll crash within moments at a gate.

Another solution might be a 'Turn of gate effect' button. Similar to the turn off gun effects etc. This wouldnt be to much to ask for would it? You wont know if someone jumps in but you got corpmates for that ----------------------------------------

Wow, you obviously haven't read the posts in this thread. I think I only mentioned it three times. You would know if someone jumps cause you'd still hear the sound. As it is now, I have to zoom all the way out to play the game which means I don't see the effect anyway. I'd rather be able to play zoomed in to be honest.

The gate effect is just an easy/stable trigger(jump through g8 and 'boom'), but not the only 'effect'. I've had it with gun-fires, warp-engages etc. Even with all effects and sounds off it still happens, just less frequent. Kindda annoying if each salvo in a fight could be your last. Classic doesnt have this issue.. but march 10th... |

For many of us that have posted in this thread, the gate fire seems to be the only cause. It occurs in both Premium and Classic modes. If classic works out well for you, congrats, for me it does not.

Confirming that I have crashing issues with my X1950 card as well (catalyst 8.12). It seems to be related to combat; gate guns and scrambler effects most likely. And now to the "funny" part: I only experience crashing on one of my accounts, the other one is totally unaffected
I run both accounts from the same install and with the same settings, and I have absolutely no idea how this is possible.

Can you try something for me? I've stopped all of my gate fire crashes, I want to see if it works for you. I need some diagnostic info to start, it should only take you about 20 seconds. If you're willing, do this:
Start up EVE alt-tab out to desktop right click on the desktop, open up CCC advanced view, expand the 3D tree click "all settings"
now just list off all of the settings in there, for example I'm using:
AA: use application settings (true) filter (edge detect)
AF: use app settings (false) p.pixel samples: 16x (forced 16x AF)
Catalyst AI: low Mipmap detail: High Quality Vertical Refresh: Off unless app spec. Adaptive AA: Enabled, Quality
I had exactly the same gate-fire crashes until I turned off custom AA and set it to "use app. settings." Catalyst AI is also known to cause some instability in games at times.
Try that and see what happens, I've had no crashes for days now sine I made those two adjustments.

TL;DR LRN2/POLITE
This thread is nearing its one year anniversary and CCP has yet to tell anyone with SLI AMD cards how to play their game without it breaking, has yet to even acknowledge there is an issue. I've refrained from using course language, but only because the level of incompetence apathy and immovability displayed by CCP made me go out and buy a nv 9800 since evidently CCP doesnt care about SLI AMD users. I found no other solution to utilize the three accounts I've purchased after my last video card died and I bought a 4870x2; the game is completely unplayable with SLI AMD cards and even the most facile testing reveals a horrendously non-working game.
Who are these planted shills who keep coming in here and telling people reporting issues that its their fault / they have no right to be furious? Fly away silly trolls, fly away.

It seems like quite a few of the suggestions here involve doing things to slow eve down. interval default & one other suggestion I've seen, using the box filter, will both cause significant slowdown.

The "Interval One" fix only reduces your framerate to the refresh rate of your monitor (unless you are a special case and running multiple clients with Aero enabled on Vista/Win7 where you get refresh rate divided by number of clients/screens).
I've yet to hear a compelling argument as to why anyone needs a refresh rate that's over 30FPS (bear in mind that US TV and cinema screens run at that, UK TV at 25FPS).
Also: Interval One doesn't always work, especially for the people with cards listed on this thread - the gate fire crashes are a result of an interaction between the ATI drivers (some Xfire, some not) and the Eve rendering engine.
Another note:
ATI/AMD = Crossfire (sometimes shortened to Xfire). nVidia = SLI.
There is no such thing as "ATI SLI" (though some AMD motherboards do support SLI).
Edit: my bump for this thread for today ===================================== It smells of spoon! ===================================== |

No, I'm afraid the whole gate thing is not incidental, read the hole thread and you will see that most have a gate freeze and blue screen of death, also it is not just with SLI or newer 3650 cards as I have had the problem since they patched to the Premium graphic content last year. I bought a ATI 2600 hd to play the premium content and have had trouble ever since. Btw, I upgraded from an x700 ati card that now sits in my son's computer and he can play premium just fine, with lower frame rates ofc, but not gate freeze blue screens. However I seem to be fairly untouched in the last few weeks by the bug, no idea what has changed, except my MSI K9a platium mobo has recently lost all sound, cannot even get a sound card to work on it. I always wondered if this was a sound issue but the fixes posted to maybe help fix a sound issue did not work.
I leave the debate an anxiously await the patch.

..too bad I didn't see this thread long ago, hardly ever visit this section of the forum, but I'll do a +1 on your guys count here.
My old PC ran with an ATI card, Asus mobo. Can't check specifics atm but can dig it up in a day or three from now (card on attic, documentations from order in another box). Did read the whole thread, can just add up with what's been said.
Basicly what happened was this; I had 'freezes' in the game, usually 2-3 seconds, on gates. Occationally I got the VPU recover, which was easily solved by tabbing out of the game, killing it from task manager and reload the game. No system shutdowns. However, I noticed that my card got really damn hot, and only when playing EVE.
I ran a comparison on the heat on the card from multiple games and it was clear that EVE put some significant stress on it. I tried to increase cooling in my chassi as I figured this was a heat issue, but the odd thing was; it was fine in other games. And the other hardware ran at nice temperatures, only the ATI-card would get hot, and only in EVE.
EVEntually the card started to get visual heat damage, I got fed up and bought a cheap nVidia replacement card, which I ran for nearly 9 months with no issues whatsoever. Got a new PC this week and went with a XFX GeForce GTX 285 BLACK this time. No issues.
It's pretty simple to find the key elements here. EVE + gatefires + (in most cases, I saw some rare nVidia posters in here but only one or two?) ATI. It's a bit ridicilous a cheap low-end nVidia card got alot less stress than the high end ATI-card, and only in EVE. As far as I'm concerned, CCP killed my card, but it'd be damn messy to prove it. The very least they could do it so help others solve this issue.
Shouldn't be too hard for CCP to plug in an ATI-card and check the gatefire over and over? -

Well, I suspect the new gate fire has done something to help this out, I just had over 7 hours of game play with no incident.... And then Wham. something new happened at a gate fire, I CTD!!! I declined sending info of the Eve exe crash and logged back in, all in all I was out of game for maybe 3 minutes. You probably think thats pretty good, except I noticed that although the exe had crashed and I had to reload the game, I had not made an emergeancy warp, I was exactly where I was when the exe crashed
I really hope this is not going to be a reason for an entire new thread for ATI cards.

Well I'm very disappointed to say that the new patch hasn't resolved this issue at all. I have just retried my 3870 X2's with the latest drivers and the same issue still persists. After three graphics crashes (requiring reboot each time), I've gone back to a 3 year old graphics card.
It beggars belief that this issue which was reported some 8 months ago has not had a single CCP reponse or fix of any sort. Considering the amount of grief this issue has caused I am amazed CCP is doing nothing about it. I feel sorry for all those people who are probably still struggling with this issue, unaware of the glaring underlying defect in Eve which is causing it.
It really is pathetic that we are getting crap like 'bigger lights' on ships when such a fundamental game-breaking exists for all those with ATI 3870/4870 cards.
Shame on CCP!

This thread doesn't actually make much sense. Its clearly obvious that several posters have different problems and others are running setups that they clearly don't understand/grasp the power requirements for. A video card getting extremely hot for instance has to do with why its freezing. A freeze means one of two things - either something is cycling hard (GPU max'd - ie makes the card hot, which shouldn't cause damage if it is properly cooled) or there's a deadlock.
I'd actually like to help someone troubleshoot but I need someone who is fairly technical. Anyone here having this issue happen to be a programmer? |

Which is part of why I was pointing out that it seems like there are multiple issues. Slowing down the processing speed would impact deadlock issues (because collision chances are reduced). Others appear to be having infinite loop issues - which should be relatively deterministic in nature and unrelated to the framerate. |

All they're going to see is "the likely cause for this problem is atikmdag.sys" or something to that affect. The person who should actually receive that crash dump is ATI/NVidia but they likewise won't have any reproduction steps. Ugh is right. While we all appreciate your comments we cannot help that other people have jumped our thread and posted seemingly related information. The CORE focus of this thread is a discussion about the gate fire effect and it's subsequent issues with ATI 38XX and 48XX series GPUs. As for your comments about hardware issues, you are correct that many people who have posted in this thread are not diagnostic-ly inclined. What I can tell you is that I am. For real life I run a software development department at my company, we build PC based 3D training systems. I have my OWN QA/QC staff and yes, I'm also an electrical engineer. I have personally done both hardware and code troubleshooting, bug tracking and conflict resolution. Here is what I KNOW about this problem.
1) it occurs on multiple systems (I've tested 4 different systems myself) with both ATI 38XX and 48XX based cards (I've tested 3 cards, two from one manufacturer, one from a 2nd.) It causes a hang or crash depending on the VPU recovery settings of the ATI driver set with all cards (mine were all 38XX based).
2) It occurs across multiple versions of the ATI driver. I've run 6 now in an effort to eliminate the issue. Some seem better than others, but ALL have exhibited the issue for me.
3) These tested systems do not exhibit ANY issues with other games, and it's not the power supply, voltages or heat related. I've tested ALL of the above in my home machine. My GPU runs cool (monitored both via internal temp sensor and external ones) in eve (much hotter in something like mass effect), the voltages are on spec and in my home machine, I've put 3 different power supplies in all to no avail.
4)It's not my memory. Aside from trying two sets I've run memtest86 on it over a weekend with no failures.
5) My home PC runs fine with an older x1600 based card.
6) It happened in both the classic and premium versions (no longer relevant). I'm testing it today in APOC.
7) setting interval 1 seems to have decreased the rate of occurrence.
8) zooming all the way out when on gates ELIMINATES lockups/freezes for me all together since the gate fire effect is not "fired" when you are zoomed out do to the "LOD" algorithm.
9) #8 above makes PvP on gates nearly impossible since I can't see anything.
10) the new Apoc update runs so well on my Macintosh, I've switched to using that at home. Luckily I've got 6 machines at home to choose from and another 4 at work that I can use.
I hope this helps clear up the current known state of this issue. Please, please don't post anything about my GPU overheating as it will likely just **** me off and cause me to type another VERY long post. Keep in mind that MANY of us are very frustrated about this since the gameplay (#9 above) has been effectively ruined for us for quite some time.
So is it a CCP issue, an ATI issue or an end user issue?
At this point I think you can see that it is a CCP issue that occurs on ATI hardware. In my business I would be bugging the heck out of the ATI driver guys trying to figure this out if the % affected users was high enough (probably not in this case). I strongly believe it has something to do with a bug/change in the ATI driver for 38XX and 48XX series GPUs that CCP could work around (see earlier post about a graphics option to turn off gate fire). I doubt it's a bug in CCPs "code" but since it only happens in their software, guess what, it's their problem!

This bites. I never had an issue of my computer freezing in Eve until today. And it has nothing to do with Gates or anything. I can sit in the station docked and be chatting with someone and the sound stutters and the monitor goes to sleep. A hard reset is my only way out. A few weeks ago, I was playing Eve for hours with no problems. Today I was Fallout 3 for 3 hours straight. But I go into Eve for about 1.5 hours and it happens again... I have confirmed twice, but cannot find a mention in the logs of any errors.

I had been experiencing a problem simular to what is described above. With random crashes that didnt seem to be related to anything else on my ATI 4870 X2. Running Vista 64. After quite a bit of time searching I found that a number of 3D applications (including games) conflict with the Windows Areo apperance color scheme setting, which uses ones graphics hardware to make windows have transparent borders and the like.
I disabled this and my crashes have since disappeared Anyone who isnt helped by other solutions might want to try this, it does make windows and the desktop look less polished if you will, but it also reduces the system resources used on a regular basis by windows and has improved my loading times in various applications
To turn off the Areo Scheme: Right click the desktop and select Personalize --> select Window Color and Apperance from the top of the window --> In the Color Scheme box select either Windows Vista Basic or Windows Standard (whichever you prefer)
This will in some cases also cause the windows desktop background to be reset to black of course this can simply be set again
Again this problem appears to be exclusive to vista as other versions of windows dont include this useless feature
I hope this helps. |

Edited by: Final8ty on 14/04/2009 00:37:00 Well i have looked through this thread & tried all conceivable solutions. Never had Gate fire problem BTW.
Disabling vista Aero & running even in classic mode. Under clocking my ati gfx cards by 200Mhz from 800Mhz default to 600Mhz, ATI CCC default everything else. Bloom & HDR off & i still get driver restarts, BSOD & DEP crashes.
Driver restarts, BSOD & DEP crashes causes that i can replicate with out fail. In Order of severity from instant to random times but a certainty if left opened long enough or opened enough times.
Opening the settings menu at any time other than the login screen. the quickest of the lot is when docked. The non transparent Confirm Buying/selling quantity menu & any similar non transparent menu of equal or greater size. The fitting screen. Calculator.
All GUI/UI related. And never had this problem for me anyway until this latest client.
This is the only game that has ever crashed my gfx drivers at stock speed. I have also never had a DEP pop-up before.
Pls fix the game.
