Well ive never really seen a proper post about this so i may make one..
If they ever make an EVE II do you think it wld be dis-continous? ie will every1 starts over again? And for the story, Perhaps the wormhole opens up to a war torn and extinct Earth-Sol universe..(milkyway galaxy) Perhaps the ammarians discover divine intervention, and we can all play in a second-dimention x))) Maybe its Jove related etc.
As i see it oneday, CCP can not keep creating expansions/patches and will have to either dump eve (me gasps) or create an entirely new game.
What do you guys reckon EVE has in store for the far future?
Post ur whacky idea ofr EVE II here!

So which one of your suggestions is it they wouldn't be able to do in an expansion?

Never going to happen.
Each new expansion is a new eve especially with the graphics update.
CCP will make the Vampire MMO after EVE but eve will still run. Their workforce is growing to cover two games.

i think eve 2 was eve:exodus
eve is a persistent universe and there will only be one but expansions will continue and develop the story on and we cant return to earth solar system since a wormhole with no location when coming out there was found....we are actually in the middle of the universe lost and we can never return
i see something coming up with the jove in some future expansion and i do have all races frigates skill to fly a jovian frigate XD
but as devs said this wont be any time soon as i think they are asked every time there a expansion
i personally think there going to throw it in secretly one day

So lets say, by 2015, CCP has released what nearly 100 patches.. On software that predates the millenium bug..
You really think they can keep patching it?
The reason i noted the above is yes, they can be expansions, but one day expansions may not be plausible..
I personally hope EVE never dies, and is generated into like virtual reality etc..

wouldnt pre millenium bug software have been written prior to the year 2000? eve was beta'd when? 2002-2003?

Note i say EVE II not EVE 2..im aware that EVE is up to like 8 now or something..
When i say EVE II im not talking about patches/expansions im talking bout a completely new game, where perhaps account details are transferred over form the old (the line between this and an expansion is fuzzy at best lol)
But one day, EVE must end, and thats why i hope there will be an EVE II to replace it :D

Look at the EVE art and music, the dates are pre-2000, and hence the beggining of software creation would have been pre-2000..

When walking in stations comes in, atmospheric flight, Planet landing etc etc the game will have evoloved far beyond itself and i see that continuing for the next 10years or more.
One day down the line if the numbers in eve continue to grow and produce profits, i imagine we could see a complete code rewrite of the game. But even IF eve was to die, it wont be for 10+ years unless they suddenly decide not to carry out what they have already planned.

So they'll release a re-written client at some point, sure. They'll keep updating the back-end as well...
... that doesn't make it EVE II tho. There's no way they would kill the EVE world and start a new one, just because the client/server software is a bit out of date and could use a re-write.
They'd have done it a long time ago it that were the case.

I really hope with atmosperic flight CCP add a new dimention to EVE. Planetary combat would be really cool, as well as new minerals found on differnt planets. Would be awesome to have smaller frigate or smaller sized ships fighting in the atmosphere with BS in low orbit to provide artillery support. I would like to think EVE is far from its prime and after ambulation many more elements can be added to the game. Unless there are big changes in combat (not saying it wont happen) I cant see any room for more than a couple more ships (although FW faction BCs would be quite cool) for interstellar flight atleast.

Yeah, and dreads cld be called in for alpha strikes on installations , of ocurse wed see restrcitions/certain req's to stop this happening too much, bu atmospheric combat will make EVE the uber god of gaming!
And no, we havnt see all the ships yet, untill i see a t2 titan or a deathstar copy-cat ship (yes lets pop planets \o/) their work simply isnt done!

As long as they make the skill tree wider and not taller (in other words, more things to do instead of just getting better at the things you already can do), update the graphics every few years, and keep enough loyal fans to explain to all the rookies why having 900K SPs isn't a crippling setback, there's no reason at all why Eve can't continue indefinitely - it's not like other MMOs where every time they release an expanion everything before it becomes obsolete overnight. It's all still there and just as valid as it was the day before. |

It's definitely an interesting phenomenon, a game already 5+ years old that's still growing at an increasing rate. But it's hard to imagine still playing EVE 10-20 years from now. I mean, no other computer game has had that long of a run of popularity (except maybe Nethack, which is 21 this year). One day they may have to create an Eve II, either for marketing reasons, or because they run out of ideas that they can implement in the system they've built. CCP may have a lot of ideas that just aren't compatible with EVE as we know it, that'd require a new game.

The cool thing about this type of game is that you can just keep updating it indefinitely.
There is no need for "Eve 2".

Someday yeah they probably will have to create something totally new because who the hell wants to come into a time based skill game where the other guy has 13 years of skills and you just started? I'd just play a different game at the thought of that.

The only way i would see the need for an EvE II, is if CCP discovered a crucial flaw in the main code that made it impossible to make a change. And the only way to fix it is a full rewrite. But they could do that with just another expantion

This, in all honesty, is probably one of the biggest obstables to continued growth, even though with the way the skill system is setup it's completely untrue that more SPs directly translate into an overwhelming advantage.
Which is why CCP needs legions of adoring fans to convince people their old level-based mentalities don't really apply here.

unfortunately that's not true, every time any changes are made to a piece of code it's complexity increases, and it's effects are wider spread, at some point the code gets to a point where it becomes almost impossible to fix or change on thing without affecting a multitude of other functions.
This is common in any long living piece of code and inevitably results in a code rewrite of that system, this also affects the database and at some point a database also reaches a point where it's original design is just simply no longer viable.
I think in a way much of this is manifested in unfixed and possibly unfixable lag issues that we have all experienced, at some point I have no doubt CCP will do a re-write of the code at all levels.
However this does not mean that the universe should cease to exist since data will more than likely simply be imported from the old to the new database, with some conversion where required.
In short, no piece of code that is constantly being tweaked can live forever, but a rewrite does not mean we all start over either.

That and half of the characters in game have less than 1mill skill points. 90% have less 20mill skill points which is about 9-18 months of skill training. Quartly Econ Newsletter - Figure 2
Even if you discount that the vast majority's of those that are less than 1 million skill points are alts, abandoned trials, etc. that still leaves 80% of the character base at less than 18 months of training. If this trend continues into the future even went he game is 15 years old most characters will only have been playing the game for about a year. Which really is not that intimidating considering that CCP did recently increase the starting characters skill points from 90K to 900K, so there is no reason that they could not do the same again.
I think the only real problem that CCP will run into is the lack of names for characters. But this is something that could be solved server side, just like the 90 day limit on secure cans.

Wow, u like covered almost everything!
I think that if EVE stands for many years, it may actually increase its popularity as it can say "THE ONLY GAME TO LAST A DECADE" etc..
Id say that a player 13yrs old wont be much diffreent to a player 9 years old, as theyd both mostl likely have maxed out sp..
As long ass CCP give new char sp boosts and nive comments like "There arent many older players to hurt you and you can still get by" etc, the game can last indefiantely!

I'm new to the game but really older players skill is much more fearsome than their skill points. I don't think there ever needs to be another SP boost. The reason being is because even if 13 years pass and someone has over a hundred million SP they don't take that SP into battle with them. In the end, if they pilot say.. a Frigate someone that's been specializing in frigates for a year or so will be just as equal. Except.. the only difference is that the person who's been around for 13 years would potentially have so much experience that he'd crush his opponent with that alone.
In this case, even a skill point boost would mean nothing. Is this wrong? Not at all, he played so much he deserves to be that good. Besides, it's not from a game mechanic but overall experience.
