So, two days into FW and I join, get signed up to a fleet in minutes and am on my way to a battle. Two light missile launchers, energy sapper, shield boost and speed mods on a cheap t1 frigate. Lovely.
I'm sure that setup is a bad idea, but what is worse is I didn't have my display setup for PvP. I didn't have a clue what I was going to fight against and when I got there, there was no large objects I could quickly find to warp to, and the phone went. Yeah, thanks dad! No, I don't want to talk, oh right, yes... um... and so it goes on.
All the while a few ships warp in and attack my stupid little frigate first, blowing me away and scrambling my pod, taking out 50 million worth of implants. No I didn't use a jump clone, no I didn't warp away the instance the ship went boom. I laughed at myself then swore at my dad (oops).
No you can't have my stuff, I'm not quiting, but I would love some advice on not sucking so badly at PvP. Really love the idea of FW even more after trying it for all of 5 minutes. But advice is a must, I cant afford to replace 250,000isk clones every 5 minutes or I will end up going broke!!! |

Sadly there is no all encompassing guide to PvP
If you are in a small T1 cheap frig chances are you will die quickly... but probably not before you do some damage or hinder the opposing some force in some way or another
If you put yourself in a cruiser then you might last a little longer but ultimatly you might still end up losing your ship
the Golden rules of PvP though
never fly anything you cant afford to lose
always keep your clone up to date
If you cant afford to lose your pod, dont pvp

Edited by: Tenacha Khan on 13/06/2008 09:06:32 As your ships going down, even before it pops...just keep hitting warp to a planet or something. Thats really the only way not to get podded. As to not dying, keep your frigate moving all the time and if you jump into a system with your fleet dont uncloak first until you have mastered the first point at least. Fly cheap stuff, dont fit a sheild booster or nos, just guns missiles, web, scrambler and mwd.
Edit: Also glad to see that your having fun, better to learn pvp early than late. 250k for a clone aint that bad, think mine is 15mil or something |

Being at the computer helps
Also, don't go alone. Think like the wolves do. Stay in packs and hunt the weak and wounded.
Use jump clones ! You don't want to risk your implants ! If you don't have necessary standings for jump clones, there are plenty of corporations that offer jump clone services (you join them, you get standings, you install clone, you leave them, ta-da!)
You won't need to replace 250,000 isk every hour. Hopefully you will kill and loot, which will put you in the green isk-wise.
Set your overview properly ! No point in having gate guns and asteroid belts on your overview, they're just taking up space and distracting you.
Know your ship ! Know what it can kill and what it should run from. Use this knowledge to take proper decisions before engaging. Ask around!
Also, have fun |

Ask for advice in your militia channel. Specifically about your overview. I'm sure some there will be willing to help. Good overview settings are key to being able to execute orders properly.
Stick with really cheap implants if you have to have them. Getting into a few well run ops will give you a good idea of how things flow. |

First of all, I don't know what faction you belong to, so this is very generic.
If you are not in a corp, get in a corp-- get in one with forums where you can ask questions and get meaningful answers. Nobody does this stuff naturally, some people simply have better teachers. Setting up overview properly is critical, and is the only sticky in my corp's forum so far.
Secondly, big blobs or fleets are not the best way to learn the basics of pvp. Fleet pvp is much different than small gang pvp. I know this because in fleet pvp I get about two frames before I wake up in my clone 10 minutes later. Whereas in small gangs I can warp out without a problem if I get tagged too hard.
There are guides out there to help get set up with these things. Unfortunately all the ones I know are locked behind passworded forums, created by fc's who were exasperated with having to deal with these issues while trying to organize their fleet.
One of the nice things is that you can take yourself away from the front lines and run missions for ISK to build yourself back up after some losses. Don't fly with implants in lowsec. I have jump clones, but I don't use them for this because of the 24 hour cooldown time between jumps. I am always training, and I don't like scheduling myself in for "only" pvping or "only" missioning or mining for a day. You lost the implants, slap more in when you get them from missions. Or run naked like I do. |

I just use jump clones (i do missions till i got some isk, then go do pvp till i run out of isk, this should take more than 24 hours). My pvp clone got 2 +3 implants for gunnery/spaceship command training. Not expensive and if you keep pressing warp to button you probably wont get pod killed anyway. |

The only things that should be on your overview are:
- Objects you will target. These are exclusively hostile/neutral ships and drones. Friendlies have to be removed - they clutter up the place, making it hard to target your opponent. Do this in the overview settings, filters tab.
- Objects you can warp to. Gates, stations and planets. The planets are there so you have an object to select when your ship is going down. Keep hitting that warp button as your hull melts away, and your pod will make it out .
Everything else in the overview needs to go. Sentry guns, Concord billboards, neutral NPCs, cargo containers, wrecks - they're all in the way.

For the basics, sign up for an Agony Unleashed PVP-BASIC course HERE.
With that under your belt you'll be just fine in a Frigate and get a lot more out of PvP.

Step 1) Don't fly anything you cant afford to to lose
Step 2) Repeat step 1 until you learn the rest.
Seriously though finding a good corp is key, in a good corp you'll never be sitting in a fight wondering what to do because someone will be yelling exactly what to do in your ear. The rest is just practice. ---

Get a jump clone here for just 5 mil. Beats losing 50 mil in implants any day.

Don't fit active tank, put shield extender, plate or ECM modules instead (not all at once of course). Fly in gang, as it seems FW is only for medium to large gangs. Setup overview before going to fight, make sure you have enemy ships only on overview (add gates too so you can relocate fast). Don't sit AFK in space, immediately warp away when in pod. Check local often. When safespotted check your scanner for incoming ships. |

Probably the best way to do this is to make use of overview tabs. I have one called 'Run away'. It only shows planets. Left click one then spam the [->>>] button.
As soon as you reach full warp speed make a bookmark. If it's a long warp make another. When you arrive at the planet immediately warp to one of the bookmarks..or better yet one you made earlier. Best of all would be a friendly POS. Keep flying around for five minutes (otherwise you can't dock or jump). Then dock, leave the system or rejoin your gang.
When the time allows name your BMs and stick them in a folder called 'Sorta safe'.
When you find yourself with a spare hour two start warping between existing BMs and creating new ones. Put these in folders called 'Safe'.
If you are going to be within site of your computer for several hours but too busy doing something else (talking to parents, for instance ) jump in the fastest ship you have, warp to a BM then head upwards away from the plane of the ecliptic at top speed. Every couple of hours create a BM and put it in a folder called 'Very safe'. After 12 hours you can put them in a folder called 'Super safe'. If you log back on at a super safe and repeat this for a week you can put them in a folder called 'Totally safe'(*).
Enjoy.
(*)Actually it's not really totally safe (devs, gms, Concord and faction navies can find you). Players can't unless they find you in a less safe BM and follow you upward.
Oh and if you're flying with me please remove fleet members from the overview. |

I have had three forays into the exciting world of FW. Easy to get signed up to a fleet - just what I was after .
It is very noticeable that fleets need a skilled leader. Was flying with General Beanflicker last night and had lots of fun - one of the good things was as the fleet assembled we where talked through setting up our overviews and settings. What's more I got my first killmail *and* went home in the same ship I started in
A flight earlier in the week in a shambles of a fleet with no proper leadership resulted in a rapid popping.
There seem to be plenty of people who know what they are doing though so make sure you are listening and learning

best way for new players in a fleet to be uber-useful is become tacklers IMO.
noobs in frig dont contribute that much to DPS, but can do alot of they scram larger enemies so they cant run away.
i have 13M SP but dont think am that experienced in PVP so ill be flying a t1 just like you until i get more confident (and until my alt makes more money) to hop in larger ships.
my basic setup for merlin, nice and cheap: 2x launcher (OE-5200 Rocket Launcher / Caldari Navy Gremlin Rocket) 2x blaster (Anode Light Ion Particle Cannon I / Federation Navy Antimatter Charge S)
1x 1MN MWD (1MN MicroWarpdrive I) 1x web ('Langour' Drive Disruptor I) 1x scram (Fleeting Warp Scrambler I) 1x SB (Supplemental Scanning CPU I)
1x SE (Wavelength Signal Enhancer I) 1x inertia stab (Inertia Stabilizers I)
I might swap the SB for a 2nd web because theres been alot of nanos on the gallante side, and maybe swap the inertia for damage control.
hope this helps and hope u will have fun in PVP~ |

I totally agree.
although I have 13M SP and some minor exp in lowsec piracy.... fleet combat is a completely different story. I learned it the hard way by not following his step 1 :x (lost a rigged BB and a Manticore in the same day)
and for a good corp, our corp is recruiting~ we have a 5M SP requirement, but if you are willing to learn and participate, we are happy to have you.
we also have a frigate replacement policy so that should help you get more actions~ |

#1 thing to do for pvp is hit the restroom, grab a drink and a snack, get your voice channel set up, basically get everything out thats going to take time to do, out of the way. you dont want to be in a hostile system when you realize you gotta go do somethng and it can't wait. if you dont need people calling you...well....unplug the phone maybe?
get a jumpclone, use cheap implants if you wanat but nothing expensive. also your clone costs are a lot cheaper then 4.5mil so it can be worse and my 4.5 could be worse as well. Just go farm roids or missions in safe space when your getting low. your not in a corp war so no ones going to bust your balls for not participating for a day or two while you farm isk.
theres people out there, especially in your own militia that will have an interest in helping new pvpers out with decent fittings for specific ships and even skill orders. |

In my opinion this isn't PvP, Player VERSES player implies some kinda of battle. If a commander sends his army against another army its a battle, if a commander sends his army to kill a trader convoy its a slaughter.
Like I said IMHO this is ganking not PvP. But opinions differ and if your just after killmails and isk then hunting the weak is fair enough.

You can learn a lot from a PVP Basic class with Agony Unleashed. I would offer to teach you myself, but we only teach in our own alliance.
