Hi,
I'm just getting into running level 4 missions in a Domi, and I was wondering which long-ass level V drone skill would benefit me most (both taking equal amounts of time to train).
Essentially, is it better to have Tech II heavy drones, or +20% dps to Tech I heavies?

LOL T2 drones, first you get 5% bonus to heavy drone damage from level 5 skill and then T2 drones have 20% more damage, life, traking, speed, orbit. So you get at least 25% more damage vs BS. you probebly get a 45% bonus vs frigs becous Heavy drones have so bad targeting. so the extra 20% tracking makes them hit more offen. also speed helps 2.

nop. its better to train stuff that leads to other stuff. you probebly want a carrier some day. Having all thous drone skillz will get you there faster. but you need drone inter V anyway. But for now its better geting t2 ogre

sentry drones have their uses, but if you are running missions, stick with the heavy drones.
I primarily see T2 sentry drones being used by carriers to assault POSes...but they do have other uses.

It really depends on the ships you are flying, which skill you want to train first.
Train Heavy Drones 5 first if you fly a ship with large Dronebay and Bonuses to Drones. The damage increase from Tech 1 to Tech 2 Drones is about 30%.
Train Drone Interfacing 5 if you fly small to medium sized ships or ships that do not specialise in Drones. The Drones Interfacing Skill increases the performance of all sizes of drones.

I don't really see why heavies are better for missions than sentry. They do the same damage (even more with sentry drone rigs), but sentry drones do not need to travel to the target and then to the next. If you have your target 35km away, your Ogre IIs will take about 35 seconds of flying just to get to it. All this while your sentry drones have been shooting all along - and probably killed it.
It takes a whole one volley to shoot down an approching frig up to 20km away.
If the Ogres start taking damage, that's another 35 seconds or whatever till they return under fire, while you can scoop up the sentries in a second.

To the OP: I would personally train interfacing V first, although I'd expect that you'll need both at some point as a gallente. Just because it'll help with any other type of drone.. even though I'd expect t2 heavies to offer a healthier damage boost. (disclaimer: I've never used a dominix for missions tbh).
/highjacks thread
I've also heard that sentry drones are rather good.. but I had a couple of questions. In any mission that has acceleration gates you need to travel to, what do you do? Abandon a set at each level and pick it up later? Use cheap t1's and dump'em? or just heavies?
Also, t2 sentries are quite expensive if I recall.. isnt 20m/flight a bit steep? Do they have a sufficient buffer so you can support them by remote reppers?
(honest questions from an ignorant caldari btw) |

I personally got Heavy Drones V first. Tech-2 is leaps and bounds better than tech-1.
As for sentry drones, the problem I've encountered with them, and this may be just because I've been using tech-1 for now, is a matter of range and falloff. They don't kill enough of the enemy rats before almost all of 'em get below the sentries' gunfire. I don't like having a bunch of frigates orbiting me at a range I can't hit, so I much prefer tech-2 medium drones for anti-frigate duty. Now, only a handful of the battleship rats get that close. Most stay within the sentries' fun range: the problem there is that the tech-1 variety does too little damage.
I suppose if I got the tech-2 sentries, my opinion of sentry drones in general would change.
Oh, and to answer the questions above me... when you're in a mission with acceleration gates, all you have to do is scoop the sentry drones back into your dronebay and motor to the gate. You can deploy 'em again later without any trouble. Just remember to stay close to the sentries so you can pick 'em up whenever you want. That's another advantage of sentries: if they start to take damage, you can pick 'em up instantly to avoid losing 'em. --- Earning Isk Basic Skills

What of other race's ships? If you flew Minmatar, for example, where the only valid ship for t2 heavy drones if the 'phoon, is it worth training for them first, when drone interfacing V helps every other type of drone damage? Or caldari? I tend to fly 5 t2 mediums, and keep logistics in my spare. The Unit pursues invention, manufacturing, mining, and research. Like missions. Blowing up half the enemy fleet before they get into range is fun.

I agree that sentries are useful in missions, but 20km away? More like 70km with a Warden, good skills and a drone tracking mod or two.

Good point. In my personal experience I've only used tech-2 heavies with a Dominix. Ever since drone bandwidth was introduced I've never considered using anything bigger than mediums with my other ships, particularly in PvP situations. I usually just have the logistics drones and medium damage-dealers. In that case, Drone Interfacing is probably more useful. I went for tech-2 Heavies instead because I had a very specific need for them. --- Earning Isk Basic Skills

I would highly recommend getting sentry drone interfacing V for a lvl 4 mission Domi instead of heavy drones. If you don't move in your missions, you can scoop and deploy sentries in case you get accidental aggro, and plus you get instant damage at very good ranges. Outside of missions, Sentry drones are useful in very limited situation compared to Heavy Drones.
So
Drone Interfacing V if you plan on using all types of drones in the majority of your ships Heavy Drone V if you want to PvP or even AFK mission run. Sentry Drone V if you are purely just going to go missions in your Domi for now.
No matter what, if you plan on using drones at all, the drone interfacing V is really nice. __________________________________________________

The choice is easy, heavy drones is for just one class of drones, DI is for all drones, and thus a significantly superior skill.
For missions, heavies are best at afking, for active missionrunning, sentries are superior, even though they have limitations you need to work around.

I have 3 days on heavy drone op 5, after that doing drone interfacing 5
but I fly a geddon instead of a domi, must say I didn't think about the order too much. but for missions I would defiantly consider t2 sentries before t2 heavies.
but for your question t2 heavies before interfacing 5.

Thanks to everyone who replied.
I imagine I'll be training all 3 skills in the long run :) For the moment, I'm just trying to make soloing a lvl4 go a bit faster.
I think i might go for T2 sentries next, unless they cost too many million ISKies...

Edited by: Contralto on 17/06/2008 15:51:49 You won't lose sentries as often as the slow lumbering heavies, so cost isn't an important factor. Once you try T2 Sentries, Heavies get left in the hanger.
keep a bit of range (50 to 100km) and not much will hit you or the Sentries, use lights and med's for anything that gets under the Sentries, use at least 2 Omnis to increase tracking and optimal range. 50km optimal for Garde II's and 100km for Wardens. Sentry damage rigs will boost dps far beyond the Heavies.

This pretty much sums it up. I let my sentries snipe until ships start to get to about 20km away (assuming there are any left alive), then scoop my sentries, let out my heavies, turn on my tank, and go read forums or whatever until the missions' over.

Damage is relative to your ship & skills. I use tec2 sentries, use a Dominix with BS5, Drone interfacing 5 & most of the damage multipliers to level 4 & 5. Sentry drones tec2 really rock. If anything survives then I clean up with tec2 Hammerheads.
Instant damage from the sentries is much more important than 5 lumbering ogres getting into range then getting popped because you didn't get full agro before launching them.
The only time I immediately deploy heavies is in Angel missions where the battleships orbit really close.
Never leave your sentries unattended in missions as they will get popped one by one when they change to a new target. The tec2 versions can give out a lot more damage & are much more resililent before you need to pull the agroed one in. Training tec2 sentries is really worth the effort-do it now

A sidequestion: Does drone interfacing effect the strength of electronic combat drones or logistics?
Or how can you enhance their ability otherwise?

No and check rigs, but with rigs remember it's a percentage increase on their base percentage so pretty poor. Basically there is only one good rig and that's the sentry dmg rig. And even that takes so much rig fitting that usually you're better off with different rigs.
