I should be able to decide if I want myself shielded from inappropriate language. I have decided that I don't - I want no censoring.
Now, by all means keep it on other accounts - what I want is some kind of toggle! - - - -

Edited by: Tanaka Nari on 19/06/2008 14:50:40 Reminds me of a profanity filter in an old Diablo II forum that filtered jewel (encountered often in-game) because it contained jew. Now who's discriminating, the person who says it, or the person who filters it because it's a 'bad' word?
Which reminds me, *****ed plates are not *****ble on most ships.
I mean, it's not like most people wouldn't know what's behing those ******* ****s, you can mostly glean it from the number of ****s and context. Disable it, please? If people swear too gratuitously and somebody complains about them, issue forum warnings, but please just get rid of that annoying error prone filter. The average Eve player is 20+ anyway, and minors still need their parents' credit caard to play.

Because like most political correctness, it isn't actually initiated by those who are descriminated but by white 'westerners' (I am one) who want to feel as though this is doing something to help racism/discrimination.
By not allowing such words you draw peoples attention to the 'issue' that may not have even cared/bothered about it before.
Those who are racist will continue to be so...
Imagine how much more free and liberal everything would be without companies constantly fearing this terrible 'where there's blame there's a claim' culture that the US introduced..., people can have blameless clumsy accidents. It happens : TRUTH!

Eh, I prefer the filter. That way, when I bypass it, my swear words have more impact.

I really don't think that the filter as it stands is necessary. It does more harm than good. You already have GMs and devs patrolling the forums. Couldn't you just have them watch for needless profanity? Better than filtering any set of letters that has potential misuse, resulting in miscommunication because half of a word is blocked. At least make it optional! ____________________________________ Caldari by birth, Minmatar by citizenship.

The filter is there so their work load isn't so much, and what your saying then is lets give them more work to do instead of fixing things in the game like our mythical lag issues? You need to look at the bigger picture when making a statement such as your own.
Why get rid of it? People need to learn that racism and such profanity in society isn't acceptable. There are laws in the real world that prevent some of these. If you want to be a racist pig it has no place here or in the real world. I'm sorry you feel the need to be this way but hate just breeds more hate. Like someone mentioned earlier in the thread if you want to see the word you can quote the post and read it there. There is your option to disable it. The sword can only strike one enemy at a time, but tactics can defeat ten thousand men at once. |
