Just curious if Eve is still growing. I just started and like it but wondering if i came in to late. Also what is the highest concurrent record of players online, I saw 31,000 once and thought it was pretty cool

Yeah, apparently it's still growing. Pretty amazing really, considering it's some 5 years old now. ------

i frequently see around 35k, one time i saw 42k on to, but yes this game is growing, and they recently put the new expansion on television so, it should attract quite a few more people
p.s. i think the peak was a while ago at around 47k? if im correct

Eve is definitely growing. I think to get a really good boom started is to have Eve have more coverage. The coverage is more around the Euro games magazines. Magazines and sites I have never heard of. Thanks to IGN I was with Eve since the beginning. They just need more advertising and win awards like the Spike Video Games awards. I never seen Eve in that at all.

Not sure if its just running in the U.S. but commercials during Battlestar for a space mmo is bound to get new players. Theres always players from other mmos looking for a new game or even a vacation game. Eve for me started out as a vacation game from Planetside and its been over 2 years now though its been a love hate relationship. However due to FactionWarfare(FW for short) it has addressed my as well as many other players main complaint with the game.
Considering the massive upswing in combat for new players and up to those that have been here longer then me, eve has grown many times more fun then ever before. Add in the low isk requirements to get in on the fun and you have a game anyone can get into and enjoy.

That last graph shows Eve peaking in early '08 and now doing a nosedive. If you stick around a little while longer you'll be there in the end. |

The game will start shrinking if the glitches and lag isn't fixed
But it probably won't be. they keep adding "features" that nobody asked for.

Maybe, maybe not. There might be new unique users who subscribe, but there might also be existing subscribers getting a second or third account (not the same kind of "growth"). I guess they both influence the bottom line the same amount, but IMO more unique users would be better.

I'm pretty sure something big was going down at that time that correlates with the upswing of people on at one time. I see it as less nosediving and more normalizing. Looking at the "last year" graph it doesn't look as drastic as the last epoch graph. This months peaks is just 3,000 people shy of the all time peak.

Frat boys and posers, or atleast that's who fills the audience for that abomination.
Honestly, I'd probably lose respect for EVE and CCP if it won a Spike TV VGA. FFS the first VGAs had MADDEN (american football game made yearly (roster updates)) as a contender for RPG of the year, against Oblivion, which I think barely won.
FFS last year they had a 'most fueled by dew' category, oh yeah, and hal 3 had its own 'gamer fuel' mtn dew flavor.
I'll let you guys figure out what game won.

If you watch the graph closely, you will notice that the growth stopped more than half a year ago (might check this graph, the other one is too flat). The last 4-5 months the number of players online was going down steadily. With the faction warfare update, the decrease has been halted, so there are good chances it won't go down even more but stay stabile for a while. But the times of constant growth seem to be over.

so far eve has managed to defy the market trend by growing consecutively for about 4 years - something very few MMOs have done, given most tend to have a 2 year growth followed by a long tail decline.
on the other hand, the last 4-5 months there's been a downturn, so has eve reached its high water mark, or is that just a blip in the growth caused by global economics?
only time will tell.

I would say blip in global economics.
When it comes time to balance the budget, let's not lie, EVE is probably a priority but not at all in the same league as "how is foreclosing, but I sure better make my laptop payment and buy another GTC on my way out"

A lot of people in US are getting laid of and then they cannot find work. For some it is no time for games.
It is very easy to tell if the recent lack of growth is due to the game or to the economy. Look up subscribers charts from other MMORPGs and see what is happening with them. If their growth did not slow down then something is wrong with EVE. But if other games are slowing down too in getting new players then blame it on the economy.

There is always a slowdown in late spring/early summer. It generally corresponds to when school lets out in the United States.
However this year the drop has been a bit greater than past years, most likely spurred on by the downturn in the US Economy. The long term impact of that can't really be known but if energy/food prices stay high we might see a decline in US players as folks opt to fill their stomachs and tanks rather than gaming. Hopefully the prices drop.
There have been some new folks checking out the game of late. Hopefully they'll stick around.

This, or one could say there is a relatively fixed mmorpg-playerbase, so whenever a new mmorpg enters the mmorpg market, it takes away players from another mmorpg. Some of the mmorpg generate new players to the mmorpg markets. For example lord or the rings got some new players that didnt play mmorpgs so far but were fans of the lord of the rings saga. But most of the other mmorpgs recruit their player base from the existing mmorpg community. Thats why the number of players in the older mmorpgs will shrink whenever new ones entering the game.
Things become hard for eve, since a lot of people already tried eve, it's nothing new. In an old statistics ccp stated that the average playtime of a player is 7 monts, so you need a constant influx of new players, which are harder to get with time, as more and more people from the mmorpg market already tried it.
I don't think ccp is doing something wrong here, it's the same problem other mmorpgs have: people don't like to play the same game for years, when there are other/new ones. Another problem is the creation of more/new content. You want to keep older players busy, so you give them things they can specialize and improve for years, but if you do that, they will be too strong compared to the new players. So you have to keep the progression curve flat, so that newer players have a chance to catch up, but then the older ones get bored due lack of "endgame"-content. Thats one of the reasons why mmorpgs are not meant to last forever, 5 years is quite a pretty time already, but the aging process already began and i don't think it can't be stopped. Noone is to blame here, ccp didn't screw up the game like sony entertainment did with SWG, it's just the natural mmorpg aging process that takes place.
So what will happen next ? Since ccp generates the majority of their income thru subscription fees, they might get a financial problem when they lose like 20-30% of their playerbase. People will have to be dismissed, which leads to less new content / quality decrease, which then again causes more player to leave etc. At the end there will be a core playerbase that stays with eve, and a much smaller ccp (or at least the eve section, since ccp will most likely start other projects ccp, as they have the knowledge, expirience and manpower and - most important - a good name/brand/lable in the mmorpg market), maintaining the server/customer support, but not developing new stuff, till the playerbase gets so small that not even this can be paid and then, hopefully many years away from now, there will be that message that eve will close for ever. But the very most of us won't be here anymore, probably playing one of the new mmorpgs that are released every year.

That, and the fact that many of the games that have won in the past weren't even released at the time of the awards. It's the biggest shame of the gaming community and I hope game publishers do everything they can to put a stop to it.

Considering the current record of online users was achieved only 4 months ago, I'll consider "more than half a year ago" an exaggeration.

If you check the graphs, there are other periods of a few months where the number of online players drops a bit. There's no reason to believe the most recent drop is a break in the trend. In all likelyhood the steady growth will continue.
