Because clearly: 1. We're all sexually confused 2. We're all *** 3. We hate ourselves and our gender
Or maybe this is a game, and no one gives much of a **** about what gender their character is. Just maybe. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.81 (Updated 4/8) |

My forum alt is a guy (because he is the character whom I most identify with). My in-game characters are female because I always talk about them in the third person (I run three accounts simo) so I gave them female names because I enjoy talking about girls more than I do talking about men.

Alrighty, some interesting reply's(no less than 5 minutes at that)
Awhile ago, me and a couple buddies went on the discussion because we were playing a board game (Runebound, check it out www.fantasyflightgames.com) and you get a selection of characters. Naturally to even it out the game is supplied with both female and male characters. We went over the stats and what not and started some chat. We then came upon the whole male playing as female deal. And the three of us were all without a doubt on the never pick a chick deal. Something about it seems a little creepy. Ok, it is role playing. But isn't there that other word for when guys want to 'roleplay' as women

I think this might be more of an issue if people actually roleplayed being a woman. That's mighty hard to do in this here age of ventrilo and team speak. Most of the time, its an aesthetic decision... and women are naturally easier on the eyes.

When I started eve I thought all I will ever be is a portret and a ship, so I made a male. But it was a LIE. CCP tricked me. Now when ambulation comes in I will have to stare at a male behind vs a female behind every time I walk around in the station. If I could, I'd change to a female char in an instant.

This is true.
But then again, there's also descriptive terminology for guys who hang out with other guys and worry about **** like that a little too much. ___________________________________________

That's a valid point, and I too used to think like that. In fact, my main character is male for that reason. However, as you make more and more characters, you lose that "my character needs to be like me" mentality, and at that point you really don't care anymore about gender. Add that to the fact that females generally look better as avatars and it becomes a no-brainer.

I hope you're trolling. Ignorance in this matter is quite tragic.
There's multiple explanations to this. I have both male and female characters, for various reasons.
* The major reason is I want my character to have characteristics. I'm not roleplaying much at all in EVE, but my gaming background has been affected by RPG the last 20-25 years or so. I always have a characteristic, a personality, for those I play. Misanth couldn't be a female, wouldn't fit his personality. My original character was a minmatar male, with many male attributes in his characteristics. Then I got several female characters, that is female by 'nature'. Can't explain it better than that, the name, the character/role they play, the situation I place them in.. gender is a part of it.
* Appealing to look at. All my Caldari characters are female, simply because the male Caldari is butt ugly. Really horrible. For the other 3 races I have mixed male/female, but I couldn't force myself to look at the screen if I'd have one of those disgusting looking faces, no can-do.

Maybe the reason that some people are sickened by this subject is due to modern prudishness and concepts of masculinity, but I really have no clue. Every time this topic comes up though I start thinking about Shakespeare.
TBFH, I really doubt there's anything particularly modern about that view of masculinity.
I'd put forward that most men from previous generations would think it rather childish (at best) to sit around playing video games when you should be out wrestling alligators, herding cattle, or plowing the field.
-Liang
It depends on how far back and which culture you choose.
But yes, I would agree that their view of a bunch guys wasting time pretending to be flying in space would not be high.

I don't know about that TBH. Sure, you'll get to check that out but remember: you're not going to have a gun in your hand so everybody else is probably going to be checking that out too.
True story: one time I was playing a WW2 shooter (no female models, but that's really pretty incidental) and this nutbar kept getting in front of me and looking straight into the camera. After it was obvious he was doing it on purpose I was like, "hey man wtf?" and he told me "I'm looking at your eyes." Granted, the playermodels and skins were pretty good in that game but it was 1. annoying and 2. kind of bizarre. I ended up TK'ing the dude and getting booted from the server.
OTOH it would be pretty hilarious if ambulation had lip- synching and you could give your chick character a big gruff- sounding cigar- chomping voice. "Yuh? Whuddaya want?" ___________________________________________

Our avatars don't have butts... yet.
And when they do CCP already said we won't be able to do anything stupid like make them dance so CCP will probably not make super skimpy clothes available and stuff like that. If they do they will break all credibility the expansion might have had, considering it will in no way effect our gameplay.
