FoF missiles should go into dumbfire mode when they don't have anything that you would consider an enemy, that means no hitting neutral targets or your wingmates.
either that or change the guide to say that FoF missiles are aggressive missiles that will seek and hit anything in range.
Would make them useful for hisec anti-canflipper duty.

Haven't used missiles much myself, so I don't know how they're working lately. But if FoF seek out ~something~ to kill in the absence of valid targets, then I agree that shouldn't happen. Perhaps a quick check by the computer, whether there's anything Red on the Overview, could pop an error message. "There are no Foes in range" or something.

I just had the greatest/dumbest idea. CCP should intentionally implement mechanical errors and hardware failures as a factor in some of the equipment we use. For example these FoF. Clearly their name is wrong. Maybe there could be a missile that that has a greater impact than is listed in its stats. Or maybe there's a .5% chance turrets would get jammed during warfare.
