How can people afford a pirates life without access to missions, and in alot of cases, ratting?
I find it hard to believe one can live comfortably off of ransoms and the like.
Thanks in advance for discussion

fly cheap (t1 fitted frigs/cruisers until you get more isk to use t2 then maybe get bigger ships) shoot the rats in belts when looking/waiting for people
now and then you'll get across the juicy easy targets that will be your main income i your pirate. if anti pirate... hope you get their pods for bounties i guess :P -sig-

I'm not sure what you mean by not having access to ratting.
Ratting in high-sec is so unprofitable as to be pointless after your first few weeks, and if you're a flashy red you'll be comfortable enough existing in low-sec/0.0, where you can make a reasonable amount from the rats. Low-sec ratting isn't all that, but you should be able to make 3-5 million an hour in a decent system I would have thought.
Additionally, most pirates recognise the reality of PvP which means they will lose their ships, and thus fit relatively cheaply. Their targets often do not, so successful pirates will earn much more from looting kills than they lose from losing their ships - and if you're a hardcore pirate, you're not exactly trying to get hundreds of millions of ISK for a Marauder. Enough ISK to keep you in your ship of choice (often T1 cruisers/BCs or interceptors) is enough.

Ransoms aren't too bad, but, basically, you can't think in terms of "steady income". It's more like "hit the jackpot, then live off it for a while."

Depends really, I stay in high sec and sure my income varies a bit but every night I'll make at least 20 mil or so, sometimes more (40-70 mil) and sometimes a LOT more.
I don't lose ships a whole lot (KB says I've destroyed close to 10 bil and lost around 200 mil in my whole 'career') so it's worth it. Ofcourse there are better ways to make money, but those are also boring. I'd rather make less money while having more fun.

I'm a lowsec pirate with a bloodlust that leads me to take plenty of risks. I also hate running missions or ratting. How do I support my habit?
1. Fly cheap ships. I still fly T1 frigates and cruisers along with interceptors. Fit the ships cheaply; few fights come down to the difference a best-named module might make. I only use expensive modules when they're essential to my combat tactics or to getting everything to fit.
2. Ransoms and loot. I would earn more if I collected more ransoms, but in reality I often have no time to negotiate, and when I do have the time many of my targets refuse to pay ransoms out of principle. I loot everything for resale or reprocessing.
3. Trader/hauler alt. My alt is a skilled trader, and brings me top dollar on my loot via sell orders while paying pennies on the dollar for my ships and modules via buy orders. He does my buying and selling at trading hubs in highsec, and hauls my supplies and loot as needed. As a bonus, he buys other items with a good profit margin for resale, and is able to efficiently reprocess my junk loot to be sold as more lucrative minerals.
My mates enhance their income from piracy in various other ways:
4. Ratting in 0.0. Our corporation is in an alliance that controls some 0.0 space. I notice that the pilots who are willing to stoop to ratting are the ones that most easily afford fancy expensive ships, modules, and rigs.
5. Manufacturing. Some have alts who can efficiently manufacture ships and modules for use or resale.

Mainly don't lose ships. Fly cheap ships and run like hell if you might get blown up.
Loot and ransoms are decent enough income sources if you win and not lose.
You could always rat or run plexes in some corner of low sec you happen across while roaming. The BC rats in 0.1 systems can be killed in frigates and a few of those can make so-so ISK. __________________________________________________
