Or in other words, would someone who doesn't play EVE be able to enjoy it nearly as much as myself? Thinking about getting this book and lending it to my parents, who enjoy a good Sci-Fi book.

I would say yes and then at the same time a very astounding no. In my experience the average sci-fi fan is rather lazy. To not be a member of the EvE community and also fully relate to Tony's Book would take a bit of effort, which as stated before, I don't believe most sci-fi fans have the capacity to put forth said effort. I just finished it and am reading it for the second time around to really analyze it. I don't know to many people I LAN and forum war with (outside of here) that would really bother with all that. Hope that answers your question. If not then whatever, we can discuss further over a glass of wine and some good ol' American War Avoiding.......you see what I did there? |

I disagree with that quite lackadaisically. The statistsics clearly point the other way.
I don't have any handy links/sources (can't be buggered to look 'em up), but I can nonchalantly declare that sci-fi fans are not lazy, and actually sometimes do things. What are these "things"? I'll let you do the research yourself.

That's not really that hard. If I didn't know ****zle about Eve, I would guess that 'webbing' a ship means to slow it down in some way.
I might imagine that it uses some exotic jelly type thing to stick it up, for the special effects and everything, but I think most people would get the gisti. |

I don't know I have 5-6 EONs and my friend enjoyed the biomass sotry but had to keep asking what they meant by ECM and such, sure it wouldn't seem that hard but...
well if they did it like clear skies maybe it would work where it explains everything. |

Yeah, I actually don't know how in-game the book is, I just went from your post.
In either case, I am happier to be an Eve player :D |

My total bad I used a bad example :P I have yet to read it yet I'm waiting for the US release but if it's like biomass, great story by the way, the reader might be like... WTF? a few times and ask eve people what is going on.
unless your one of my roommates in which case you don't play ever but have to listen to me rant about it so much you know the whole game already lol.. |

Eve is not that hard to understand because as in a lot of sci-fi its rather a naval or aircraft story set in a dark place. There are no radical new concepts. Amarrian slaves for example, why is slavery needed? If you can use star ships and drones an industrial robot should be easy? And looking at the rate of development we see in real life one might expect something else than is told in this story. Having said this i do ike sci-fi in general and am reading the eve book now, its great.

Probably it is. If they like Sci-Fi, they can probably figure out any Eve terminology from context.
Understanding fiction written about Eve is quite different than playing Eve. I bet it would be an interesting discussion between pod pilots and non pod pilots about that book. __________________________________________________

To be fair, it is probably more enjoyable for people who don't have a lot of Eve experience. You know that feeling of frustration you get when your favorite novel is turned in to a movie, and it can never be as good as the book? Well, that's how I feel about the Gonzales novel. Don't get me wrong though, I think it is a fantastic peice of work in its own right.

oo oo I'd like to recommend absolutely anything by Dan Simmons and put forward 'Excession' as the best sci-fi novel I've ever read. |

I've only read Consider Phlebas so far which was excellent, but apparently the entire Culture series by Iain M. Banks is solid. |

Yes it is easy to read by non-eve players.
If a technical terms or bit of jargon is used, then it is described about in laymans terms first.

extremely so, yes. I prefer "The Player of Games" to any of the other Culture books, though.
People should also look into the "Night's Dawn" Trilogy, by Peter F. Hamilton. "Illium" and "Olympos" by Dan Simmons, plus his "Hyperion" trilogy, "The Saga of the Seven Suns" by Kevin J. Anderson and, for a slightly more old-skool set of reads, Anne McCaffrey's "Brainship" series. Alastair Reynolds is also worth a look.
I rate Empyrean Age right up there amongst that lot, too. -

Uhhhhh........ are these books actually Sci-Fi or Fantasy?? They sure as hell look like fantasy novel titles to me.
If they are fantasy titles then fantasy fans are clearly lazy.

Uhm, ECM isn't an Eve term, it's a real-world term. Real militaries use ECM and ECCM. If your friend doesn't know what ECM means, s/he should really read more in general. |
