I got my first taste of EVE PvP today, but I still can't understand what the other player was thinking. I've been playing for a month or so, but got bored of mining and decided to create a combat character 4 days ago.
In a Rifter fitted with the cheapest equipment I could find, I decided go ratting in Hror (0.5 system). First belt is empty, in the second there are two rats, and a few cargo containers. I approach the rats while a caldari interceptor shows up, I look up the pilot, some russian guy with a high security rating. Okay, no problem. I open fire on the rats, and suddenly I'm taking damage like crazy and the othe player is blinking red, so I warp the hell out of there, hoping CONCORD will save my ass.
A couple of minutes later I come back to the belt, and sure enough, plenty of CONCORD in sight and the interceptor is a wreck, from which I recover several high end modules worth about 5mil. I tried to contact the other player and find out what had happened exactly, but he had me blocked.
So, somebody can explain what sense does it make to attack in those circumstances? My ship and equipment were not worth more than 500k, so why make a suicide attempt on me?
Also, if I had wanted to give the salvaged parts back (possibly at a price ), what would have been the best method?
Thanks,

Yeah, it sounds like he forgot he was in high sec space. At least until CONCORD showed up.
As for what to do with the loot (assuming you don't mean actual salvage, because I don't think he'd want that) you could either sell it on the open market, or if you think you can get them to accept it, a contract or in-station trade with the relevant player would work. However, it's likely he won't want to speak with you

Then ganker = fail. Much better to use a kestrel with 4x standard launchers and bloodclaws tbh. --- Sig Starts Here --- Lord Haur - Imperial Academy Logistical Support

there is a low sec pipe next to hror he wandered in from there and forgot he was in empire is the most likely reason.

A high percentage of the world population is stupid in one way or another, those people also play EVE. So don't be scared by someone much older than you ingame, chances are he has the brainpower of a turnip.
It's what PVP/piracy/trading is based on.

Mmmmkay whatever dont really see the point but.

Another option is that it was a misclick - interceptors in particular are quite vulnerable to this, as they lock so quickly that if you happen to ctrl-click the wrong target with weapons preheated, you have pretty much no chance of deactivating all the weapons before the lock completes. If you don't have "Proceed with this dangerous action" warnings on, CONCORD will come and have a word with you. I've done it before, trying to catch wartargets at a high-sec gate and opening up on some poor hauler as the overview shifted under me, shortly followed by heading to the interceptor shop in my pod.
Though in a belt, even if he was trying to pop NPCs there's no reason why he should be preheating his weapons, so this is probably unlikely. I'd go with the "he forgot it was highsec" option too, I've jumped into highsec after several lowsec systems and continued scanning for targets as I passed through before.
And as for the suicide gank comment - nobody suicide ganks with an interceptor. Nobody. Besides, there'd be little reason to suicide gank even a T2 Rifter, never mind a "cheapest equipment" one. So just no.

I'm surprised he didn't have you warp jammed if he intentionally shot you. Very interesting situation. |

Yes, I'm surprised too, particularly since I recovered a Warp Scrambler II from the wreck (BTW, is that ever useful against rats?).
I'm beginning to think, are there any AoE missiles in this game?

No, since rats never warp out, and don't have conventional warp drives anyway. This was definitely a PvP fit.

No, but as mentioned above there are careless/stupid pilots.

Or possibly someone with too much money testing out an interceptor setup......but I'd probably go with the forgot where he was theory.

QFT. an interceptor is a T2 ship, meaning you have a chance of getting FUNCTIONAL salvage (components used for T2 rigs. Very valuable).
