ok... I want all ya'lls (yes I do live in texas) honest opinion on what a 'macro miner' is. first point... if you don't mine, don't answer please! trying to get a sample from the people to whom it matters.
On that note I figured I start by prompting alittle, I resently had a hot debate on the question of whether the use a 3rd party timer running in the backround to remind folks when the cycle had finished was considerd 'macroing'. I felt that if it automates the game even that far it was wrong while my friend felt that since it didn't violate the EULA it must be ok. for referenace to those who've seen it, he was using the Mini Timer 3 by Mr Xofar.
With that I'll let ya'll at it, honestly I really would like to know what the majority believes and just how far a person should be allowed to take it.

I don't think it automates the game, as you still have to press the buttons yourself. If you can't use a timer for mining, should we ban the use of spreadsheets for manufacturing and trading? After all, we have an in-game calculator

IMO, a 'macro miner' is a character being managed (controlled) by something other than a human being (I believe the correct term would actually be 'Agent Miner' as an AI Agent is playing the game). In essence, the Agent targets and mines rocks, and then moves the mined ore into a container all without human interaction. If you're really lucky, there's another Agent handling the haulage as well.
I'd say that running an alarm clock outside of the game is perfectly fine. It's not automating the game, it's just reminding you that you need to do stuff.
I draw the line where the game starts to play itself, as it were. When a player can sit back and be productive without having to interact at all). The EULA supports this by disallowing direct manipulation of the client using software means. --- New to the API? GrabRaw XML
It's coming...

There was a 3rd party program that was floating around a while back that was a timer. It told you when to turn off your lasers. And, if I remember right a GM said that it's fine to use something like that, since it's not doing it for you. A macro would be something that either turns on/off your lasers, or does anything in game without you touching anything.

As long as it doesn't issue commands directly to the game, or read game state info (and say display that audibly) it's allowed.
The G15 type macros are also allowed (they're not game-aware and are limited to a few keystrokes).
Timers that don't interact with the game are fine, besides which it would be impossible to police such things. It's only 'code' that interacts with the game code that is a macro.

What, you mean like a stopwatch on a string round your neck for instance ?
A macro is fullly automated as far as im concerned.
Someone using a third party timer to remind them of a cycle finishing is just an afk player. ( fine for them but not a great way to not get popped ).

A macro is an automated sequence. That 3rd party program doesn't sound like it's interfacing with the client, let alone playing it, so defently within the eula.
I personally think it's fine, and ccp will do as well considering they speak highly of Evemon, which reminds you when a skill change is coming up :)

I got nothing against a timer as it still requires you to sit down, re-target if you popped roids and haul/jetcan/drag into, you still have to play the game and can not do this 23/7. And like said previously it's like playing with a stopwatch, if you want to go ghetto you can use an eggtimer and it would be the same as end results. As long as the program does nothing but remind you that 180sec(or what ever your cycle time is) has passed, there is nothing CCP can complain about.

That's a pretty good idea with the .wav on a loop...I might have to do that.
And you got "EMAIL MOTHER ****ER!" from Euro Trip, didn't you?

Can it do anything ingame by itself ? Macro, wrong. Needs your interaction for every ingame action ? It's ok then.
