Isn't it funny how censors (in some countries anyway) don't like the exposed human female nipple, (claiming a sexual aspect to it), yet the earlobe which is considerably more erogenous, is freely exposed without comment from the censors?
The human female nipple has a biological function as primary purpose. Any sexual aspect to it may be a cultural construct.
Whereas the earlobe (of both sexes!) has no function, except as an erogenous zone.

Q: Why do we care? A: We don't, maybe?
There you have it. And the nipple has a biological aspect associated with childern, as do what each gender has in between their legs. So erogonous is defined as being associated with making and feeding kids, or more specifically, babies.

Everyone used to go around wearing hats, until the 1960s I think, when JFK didn't wear a hat.

I wouldn't say that - the nipple (on males and females) is definitely an erogenous zone. I think that it has as much to do with the breast itself (which serves both a biological and sexual function) as it does the actual nipple.
If we had nipples on the sides of our head, would we still cover them up? If our earlobes were in the location our nipples are currently, would we leave them uncovered? I suspect the answer to both is no. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

Even if that's true, which I doubt, the hats didn't hide the lobes, just the top.

Almost every part of the body has a biological funtion, but the sexualisation of most parts comes and goes as fashionable / cultural trends.
Soem western cultures currently panic a bit too much about nipples, whereas some cultures don't care whatsoever.
Look up "Janet Jackson's Nipple" ... you'll find it right next to "Armageddon".

It's wrong because we were brought up with the idea that it was wrong, because our parents were brought up with the idea that it was wrong, because... and so on, back a couple of hundred years or so I'd imagine.
Logically, there's nothing wrong with it; it's a perfectly normal thing, but it's just too deeply rooted into our culture to change now. Pretty much the same argument could be made about swearing too, but try getting that generally accepted.
If you really feel that strongly about it, why not start a campaign to make it allowed in public, but there's no way it could change for a whole generation, or more probably 3 or 4 generations, and tbh I don't think it ever would change. - Originally by: Tamia Clant in a Jenny Spitfire thread There was a flame here, but it ran out of oxygen.

Edited by: P''uck on 08/07/2008 11:04:03 Well, I wouldn't put it on one level with swearing; swearing is mostly (i'll simplify it a bit) hate-induced. Not saying thats a reason to forbid it in any way, but at least it's a difference and needs a different approach.
About the nipple thing: I can imagine that you cant change it for generations in the USA but i think that a big part of the world left the middle age already; iirc a british court decided "being openly naked in public can never be a reason for public nuisance" some years ago.
I don't know where this went, but i thought it was funny when i heard it on the radio.
also, wasnt it john lennon who said: "We won't be free until we do it like the dogs in the streets" or something?

There's a large, important difference between breastfeeding in public and the latter, to be honest.
Purely sexual acts occurring in public will usually have some form of stigma (though this can be mediated by society, obviously) to a certain extent because we have biological reasons for not getting jiggy with it out in the open.
Ask yourself - would you care if your boyfriend/girlfriend/whatever **********d in public for the amusement of one or more spectators? If so, why? Even if you rationally believe that there's nothing wrong with it, are there unrational emotions that are coming into play?
What it comes down to is that performing sexual acts in public can and often does incite jealousy among competing mates, both male and female. There's a whole lot more to this obviously, but that's the simple answer and I'm too tired to write an essay on it at the moment. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

I would like to point out that I don't agree with P'uck, I was just responding to his post and putting some thoughts down on the subject. I actually think that there is good reason for not allowing nudity in public, but it's very hard to state exactly why, other than that "it's always been like that".
When you think about it logically and objectively, there isn't anything that makes sex and nudity wrong, just as there is nothing that makes certain words "wrong" in public where others are fine. I don't swear at all though, and certainly don't go out in the nude.
I think maybe it's something to do with limits being very good for us, even if some seem pretty arbitrary. If the only limits imposed on us are the totally vital ones (eg don't assault or murder people), then there are fewer lines to cross before things get serious. I'm just typing as I think here though! - Originally by: Tamia Clant in a Jenny Spitfire thread There was a flame here, but it ran out of oxygen.

I have no clue on how to handle this thread considering that it poses a serious question. On one hand there were way to many laughs for a serious thread, but some how the seriousness continues.
So I will say it is our job as humans, in todays societies, to get over our insecurities and desinsitise ourselves to nekedness.
Human flesh is fun to play with; period.
