$15 for a single issue? This seems very excessive, about double of what most zine's cost these days (and yes I am thinking of glossier, more 'zine' like magazines: many magazines are still even less that $6 or $7 dollars).
Is the problem low print runs and bad distribution, trying to offset the cost by hiking the prices to buyers?
I've perused one issue once and it was mildly interesting, even a subscription seems interesting, but at its current price I'm highly deterred by the ripoff pricing. Anyone else agree with me? Perhaps if enough people expressed interest to buy the same magazine at a lower price ccp could be convinced to print more copies at reasonable prices.

I find the price to be reasonable fair - I've seen and bought computer-magazines at a similar price.
Most magazines have - more or less - relevant ads that helps financing said magazines. EON only has EVE-related ads, and afaik they're paid for with ISKs, as in not really helping financing the magazine.

No, I don't think it's overprice at all, given that it's an extremely niche magasine.
The only issue I have with EON is their stupid shopping cart. Can't add multiple items to the basket. _______ Break your chains! Kinda'Shujaa is just the first step. |

Well, lets see what you get:
A lot of pages in high-gloss awesomeness. Awesome smell of the ink. Interesting content and fiction. A huge map! Fun qoutes in the back of the magazine, excellent read usually. Expert knowledge by Benilopax on the market. A comic. Nice art. Interviews with CCP employees.

I'd pay much less for a pdf version - but I'd pay - right now I've stopped subscribing so they get $0 from me for their work. $some should be better than $0.

At my age a big map isn't useful. The wife isn't going to let me stick it on the wall, and anyway I bought the Strategic one so it's of no value to me.

Edited by: Theronnos on 06/07/2008 09:09:58 I agree that it is overpriced. So that is the reason why I quite after 4 issues. Even though those 4 issues I have are very very awesome. it's just not worth it for that price. And I find it very sad that the extra stuff you get, like the posters(map, iron tide) are damaged :(
Edit: I can understand the price though, as only a small amount of people buy it.

Considering that E-ON has no 'out of game' advertisements, is professionaly produced and well written and caters for - in media terms - an incredibly small readership I think its amazingly well priced.
I'd argue it's less of a magazine and more of a collectors item charting the progress and changes to a constantly changing game universe. Collectors items typically do cost a bit more than your run of the mill magazine.
But yeah, if you dont think it's worth it just don't buy it.

Indeed, PC Gamer in the UK is about ú6 which translates to about $12 so it seems pretty fair considering the lack of ads trying to sell you random crap RALLY Against Evil |

In response to the first few people who have posted....of course I'm not buying it due to the fact that I think it is overpriced. But I also chose to post and complain about it in the hopes of rallying people to bring the price down!
Why is it that so many people in this community give curt, condascending responses of the "roll-your eyeballs this is obvious" variety? I mean your expressions of supposed insight are only also effective as expressions of power over newbs if the insights are clear to everyone else and not to the newb. If they are really obvious to everyone involved, however, then the comments are just simply redundant.
I've been getting so much attitude lately within eve just for raising issues and asking questions, in forums or help chat for example, it's been really discouraging. It would be nice if people employed more of a principle of charity and conversed more amicably, instead of assuming that they are guardians of everything that should be obvious and that the new eve initiates exist to say stupid things and get shot down.
Another trend I've noticed in the eve community is good old fashioned stubborness, so in the interests of overcoming that...
Some posts here make fair points. I guess I should think of EON more like a specialist fanzine and collectors item, and not like your average $6-8 magazine off of the newstand rack. So I'm thinking of ordering a couple of issues and seeing what I think. Can people who read the magazine regularly comment more on what they think makes the 'zine worthwhile? What features of EON are timeless and collectable for you?

Totally agree - Ordered 3 recently, they came in same package - Bit mean if I actually get charged for P&P 3times like it says I Should :P
I won't subscribe for 4 episodes, it doesn't save me much so i'd rather have that money in my pocket.
I think it is a little bit over priced, if it was free p&p then it wouldn't bother me too much. I got mine like the next day so obviously they have a distribution centre in the UK.
It is a good magazine though, and it's not like its every week. I'm slowly building up the back catalogue as well, even though alot of it's years old and out of date, got some interesting reads and a few giggles.
Maybe have some commericial advertisement? Websites that sell GTC's or some computer firm, maybe have a 2 page spread of them at somepoint, nothing that's in your face. I don't think lowering the price will make that big a difference though, as I doubt there is many of us who are THAT into EVE in the first place. I personally love the whole brand, I want Eve-TV back, and even admit I want to find someone I can play the EVE CCG against! (Comon! everyone played PokTmon, why be ashamed of EVE ccg? ;) - ironically, EVE ccg is cheap compared to the competition, more cards in boosters and lower price usually.)

my only complaint about EON is that it is not out often enough. I'd still buy it if it was monthly.
As long as they don't have any more poorly written "thought experiments" (that was 5 or 6 pages of absolute drivel). It was only the first issue that had IRL adverts, since then it has contained Eve related adverts.
Well worth the money. I'll be resubscribing.

It's true that E-ON is relatively pricey compared to other gaming magazines. It's also true that the actual market in which E-ON vies for attention is a niche one. Without being able to rely on the ad revenues that other magazines can rely on, E-ON will always remain a "premium" price product. (I can't believe I said that.)
Personally I'd love it if E-ON was available twice as often as it is now. A release every 6 weeks would allow us to cover many more in-game developments. Sometimes it seems like we're only scratching the surface of all the things happening in EVE. But if we made EON smaller (and cheaper) and released it more often, what would people think?

if you kept the same price and did one every 6 weeks could you afford to bring back eveTV?

I am not a subscriber myself, but a proud owner of #4 after DJ Xod (before he went to CCP) raffled it on a EVE-radio show yonks ago, but as for E-ON in a smaller format and a more frequent release schedule, there are good and bad-points with that I think.
One of the good things would be that you get that juicy fanzine more often. One of the downers, I imagine, would be that E-ON might suffer from poor literal quality (articles, fan stories, and so forth) because of its schedule, and I believe that would eventually put people off from it as it quickly will become mediocre.

The guides are usually interesting (the ship ones were getting silly, i mean guides for moms and pirate battleships? what % of people in eve actually fly those??). The interviews of players/corps/alliances tend not to be. The chronicles are a mixed bunch. The news is generally out of date (not much they can do about that). The little funny bits are probably what keeps me buying it tbh. Its also handy for finding out about oog eve-related stuff i probably wouldn't know about otherwise, like useful websites etc. The best thing the magazine has had for me so far has been the history though, i hope they keep it up.
