People have always grouped since start of mankind. It provides safety och social interaction which in turn means having fun together. Its not risk free since the blob you are fighting are often just as many. If you get called primary, you die.
I prefer small gangs myself, but I take part in blobs sometimes.

I much prefer solo pvp or very small gangs (say 4-5 players) to blob warfare.
However, I understand why people do blob - its just a pack mentality. On one side you have players who have a fear of loss, or loosing. Blobs reduced the chance of that occuring to the individual. Safety in numbers basically.
On the other side is the empowerment blobing gives you. 40+ ships landing on a lone ship at a gate and vapourising it in an instant is empowering -and most people in their day to day humdrum lives dont have that sense of empowerment.

Edited by: Hannobaal on 06/07/2008 14:03:46 I've flown a lot both in fleets and solo, and neither is more/less "fair" or more/less enjoyable than the other.
Last I checked this was a game about war, not dueling. If it's fair, you're doing it wrong. Why would we have corporations and alliances if we weren't meant to team up with each other and fight against each other as groups? You have less friends than others do? Well, tough luck. Get more numbers or make up for your lack of numbers in some other way.

It is beyond me why people blob. It is the least fun way to PVP. You have to share kills with countless people, there is lag, the satisfaction from a blob kill is almost negligible, FC's usually are much more high strung, overall its just a less satisfying expierence.
Stop blobbing. It sucks.

Edited by: Mankirks Wife on 06/07/2008 15:00:51 Like the real world, playing fair in Eve is counterproductive.
Eve isn't fair. Life isn't fair. Progressing in either is made much easier by making them as unfair in your favor as possible.
Remember - it's a fleet if you're in it and a giant OMGWTFBBQBLOB if you're not

There are no "fair" fights, either in EVE or in the real world. One party will always have the advantage over the other party, inherently making the fight "unfair". Discarding the notion of a fair fight you will win fights far more often.
I'm assuming you were blobbed recently?

Fighting in small gangs is fun. But people don't say "Oh, there are three hostiles. Lets send three people to fight them.".
Really, PVPers are often bored, looking for an excuse to PVP... when the opportunity arises. Three people come, but twenty people want to kill them. They're not going to say "Guys, sit out, this is unfair.". They're just going to go.
So a solo / small group has no chance of winning. Mind you, 1v1 and small group fights are some of the most fun: But they don't happen often. Not because people are afraid, but because most fights in EVE are not decided by the combat itself.
Most of the time, one force is superior, and must try to bait/trap the other. Or a superior strategy has one side at an immediate advantage. There are occasional battles where both sides have a fighting chance from the start, theres a fairly long engagement, etc. (everyone enjoys these).
...Unfortunately, most fights end with one side immediately showing greater strength, the other side running, and the first side killing whatever targets of opportunity are presented before the weaker side can run.
Mind you, I prefer to say superior strength, because numbers aren't everything. A 15 man RR battleship gang would laugh at a 30 man gang of cruisers. HACs wouldn't fare much better, but they'd just run away...

Old and useless discussion.
most pvp' ers in eve don't just play for the individual fights, they play for the wars. You win wars by killing fleets and pos's, not silly afk ratters or 1v1-fans.
It's a different goal, thuis a different tactic. [center] Old blog |
