So ever since I first read that EVE would be using a Launcher to apply updates and patches, it was kind of a relief - as I'm a fan of Launchers, even though the EVE Online Launcher is a bit dull looking, I was hoping it'd have more fancy pansy effects. I was fairly sure that it would, like with many other games - break the Steam Overlay.
Even though EVE Online has a very nice set of Channels and whatnot, I've been using the Steam Overlay a whole lot while playing EVE Online, whether it's chatting or using the web browser(Better than the in-game one, understandable though.).
And it very much did, ever since the Launcher arrived I have not been able to use the Steam Overlay at all, I have to alt-tab every god damned time I need to use/look at Steam. And it's very frustrating to do so, and no, I won't under any circumstance play windowed mode.
I've tried various settings in the Launcher such as not to show the Launcher unless there are new updates/patches - and it didn't help at all.
Have anyone found some sort of workaround to get the Overlay working? Are CCP aware of this and trying to fix it? Or are they like everyone else, not giving a crap about it?
I'd love some answers! |

I didn't bother to read your topic. But why in hell would you want to use steam together with EVE? Makes me sad

Because I have a lot of people at Steam that I enjoy chatting with while playing EVE Online, some of them have EVE - some of them don't. And the Steam Overlay was very smooth to use while playing EVE Online, now I have to alt-tab every minute to reply to messages, it's rather annoying and I hope they'll fix it.
Some people enjoy Windowed Mode, and some don't - I definitely don't like it. |

Well Ammzi, that's a little unfair now. Just because you got kicked out of your community doesn't mean he can't have his community.
The game has a tutorial that gives you a mining laser and a railgun and tells you to go shoot rocks and red crosses. It teaches you nothing else. It's been that way for 8 years, so are you really surprised that there are people who aren't aware that this is a pvp game? --Jafit McJafitson |

Not windowed mode. FIXED window mode... it makes it full screen and doesnt minimize the game when you open other applications such as steam friends list or chat tabs or browsers and such. |

Though fixed windowed mode is obviously much more comfortable than regular windowed mode, I would still want the Steam Overlay to work. I'd rather just open the overlay while in EVE to chat and then close it, instead of having to press alt+tab every time... |

So you would prefer to press alt + tab rather than right click steam and open friends list... seems to me like your just being fussy.
Fixed windowd mode and windowed mode allow you to do the exact same.. implemented by CCP to allow you to. |

No, I would rather press shift+tab to open the Steam Overlay while inside EVE. You maybe enjoy fixed window mode, but I don't. Stop trying to encourage me to use it. I've tried it and it's better than regular windowed mode of course, but I still want the Overlay to work.
Besides, I know very well what the differences are. |

Then I'll be fussy, I really enjoyed having the steam overlay in EVE, and I'd hate to see it go away only because CCP wants to have a Launcher. |

While I use the fixed-windowed mode myself (with steam chat on my second screen), I do miss having the steam overlay pop-up to let me know I have new steam messages, even if I don't use the overlay for chatting myself. And I have friends who only have one screen who are suffering from the same issue as the OP.
It would be nice if Eve was fixed so that the Steam overlay still worked with it (Eve is sold through Steam too after all). I know there are workarounds, but they're hackish and it would be nice if CCP fixed the issue they introduced.
@OP, one possible workaround would be to try adding the ExeFile.exe (from the bin folder in your Eve installation) as a non-Steam game in your Steam games list. That might work to bypass the launcher and let the overlay work (though it would break Steam showing what game you're playing and any tracking information that Steam does, so it's a stop-gap, not a fix). |

I didn't buy EVE Online through Steam, so I've already added the executable as a non-steam game, it used to work until they added the Launcher, which kind of sucks. Another thing worth to mention would be the ability to take screenshots using the overlay, and save them in Steam Cloud - a feature I use very often.
I hope CCP will look into this...! :( |

But when you added Eve as a non-steam game, you added the Eve.exe file in the root of the Eve directory, didn't you? I was suggesting adding bin/ExeFile.exe instead. Since that's the actual game, rather than the launcher, it might bypass the launcher and let the steam overlay work. |

I miss having the overlay as well, as it's browser, while not perfect, is more capable than the ingame one.
But as mxzf pointed out, by linking the ExeFile located in the "bin" folder of the game installation allows you to launch the game, bypassing the EVE Launcher. Overlay loads fine then.

[nerd] The difference is in the way that the graphical drawing surface is set up. In full screen mode, your application is effectively drawing directly to the screen. I.E. the application bypasses the windows GUI. In fixed window mode, the application is still drawing to a window - it's just that the frame and title bar are not rendered. The application here is rendered through the Windows GUI. In older days, full screen mode gave you access to a hardware drawing surface - i.e. any bit blits/image manipulation that you do occurs solely on the GPU and doesn't require the CPU to copy memory. On the other hand a window mode only gave you access to a software drawing surface, so any image manipulation had to be processed by the CPU and stored in RAM. This is why a lot of older games ran MUCH faster in full screen mode than in windowed mode - because full screen mode gave you more hardware acceleration, while windowed mode would essentially require you to use software rendering.
AFAIK, full screen mode only gives you a very marginal performance increase over windowed mode - mostly because windows doesn't have to render the GUI while an application is running in full screen mode. [/nerd] |

I'm having the same problem as well. Since I do not have 2 monitors the steam overlay works ... worked great. I know alot of people don't like steam and that's all good, but for us who have used it for so long well... The point is it is a free service/tool/whatever... it only helps those who use it. plus... I wanna take Moar skreen shottz! foooook print screen! well, I guess I just wanted to vent a little |

Tested and confirmed.
In Steam, add a non-steam game.
Navigate to your Eve directory. Enter the bin directory and add ExeFile.exe (eg C:\Games\Eve Online\bin\ExeFile.exe)
Using this shortcut to start the game will still allow you to use the Steam overlay. For updates I'd still suggest using the launcher because I've not tested any compatibility to see if the game will still download the updates the way it used to.
Don't add eve.exe in the main eve directory, it'll just bring up the launcher.
MUCH BETTER!
P.s To the guy who is telling people to stop being fussy - please quit it. The Steam Overlay is not a bad little tool to use at all and there are people out there who like to use it. If I want to alt-tab, I'll alt-tab. If I want to bring up my overlay, I'll bring up my overlay. Because I love my overlay. |

I am having this same issue as well. The difference is that I bought eve through steam as I prefer to use steam to install games if I am able. As a result I don't have a normal eve installation can't cant add that .exe as a non-steam game.
Is there a work around for steam installed versions of eve? |

Coming back again to this since no one at CCP seems to know/care.. :(
Can those of us who purchased Eve through Steam have the overlay issue investigated please?

Any update on this? Just got into the game and would love to be able to use my Steam interface while playing as most of my friends don't play EVE.
And I don't think he's being fussy at all. Alt-Tabing repeatedly on many fullscreen games often causes memory leak issues. Not sure if it applies to EVE, but just about every other game I've played after a few hours of alt-tabing I find myself having to close the game down and restarting to compensate. |
