I knew it would show up
And to OP, maybe you could play the game an hour earlier or later? Revolutionary, I know.

We had a time once where EVE wasn't down for 1-2 hrs a day, and the servers lagged, markets got bogged, and people got stuck, everywhere.
EVE is a single realm, and this is a necessity.
And don't shout back at me "server upgrades" when CCP has the most expensive and hardcore setup on the planet.

Originally by: Rchua Is it possible for Eve to have 24x7 availability? I live in Australia and downtime sucks here (downtime is 9-10pm). If that is not possible, then CCP could aim for downtime of 1 hour per week not per day. I'm not sure what kind of hardware they would have to get to achieve that. All I'm saying is that if big companies have servers that ensures 24x7 availability (e.g. banks, stock exchanges), why cant EVE have one?

uh-huh, so DT is necessary to avoid lag. Got it.

Yeah, the magical 1 hour downtime that is necessary when you have a "single realm". Every game designer knows this. When you set up 1 realm instead of 2, you have to have 1 hour downtime.

You confuse "and" with "so", and therefore completely miss the point of what the Axel said. |

Yes, they denied Fallout 3 classification because it gave an ingame reward for injecting Morphine, however they relabelled it as something fictional, resubmitted it and it was allowed. I for one am outraged at having to play a game that is exactly the same except for that. (also note that the highest restriction for games here is MA15+ (15 years and over, and never policed). And any game less than that only has a recommendation, and so could be bought by a 5 year old, technically.
DT on the other hand, as someone from Australia, can actually be a huge advantage if you play it right. Not so much anymore as it was in the days of complex's being everywhere, but still good enough.
Also, the hardware has no issues with not having a downtime, it's the software that needs it for backups, creating logs, respawning things, creating outposts, calculating soverignty etc etc etc. Quite a long list of things that can't happen while the server is up. The game wouldn't 'work' as a game if the soverignty was only calculated weekly etc. I don't know of ANY other software in the world that copes with such complexity while holding up to 50,000 users at a time. Most are much much simpler pieces of software and still have more regular (and longer) downtimes.
As long as DT is mostly kept to an hour it is really not an issue, there are serious addiction issues you have if you can't find something else to do in that time (and this is speaking as someone who's been playing for the best part of 4 years). |

It has nothing to do with that, it's the complexity of the game.

hahahahaha. I doubt the biggest ISP in the world has a cluster that even close to approaches the cluster CCP have. It's one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world.

It's amazing how easily we get upset at only doing better per capita than any other nation. ;) 20 million people, with half as many medals as countries 15x and 50x our size. Shocking it is. And what they're upset at, is that we did even better last time.
If people really don't think the game is worth playing because of this, please don't. |

I'm a father of 2 and my Downtime occurs right in the middle of the 2 hours I get to myself on some nights. I like most of the subscribers am a casual gamer who doesn't have much time for eve unlike the hardcore gamers and trolls that don't want anything to change because Dt for them occurs when they are asleep.
If Dt was changed so Australian gamers had at least some time during prime time, then subscriptions in Australia and Asia would jump up. And there IS a solution that doesn't change the amount of downtime the system needs to run and function properly... Change downtime to every second day!!
Another possibility could be to stagger downtime an hour either side of the current time being used if it needs to be done every day, although for an easier schedule I'm sure the first suggestion is probably the better one and would be one more widely accepted.
I am leaving Eve until my daylight savings is over because of this issue, I just don't have enough time playing the game I love to warrant spending the money.
I'll be keeping an eye on developments but I don't expect CCP to change anything unless they can see that the above suggestion would ultimately increase the $.
See you all on the other side.
