I've been wondering if this 'ambulation' features will allow docked players to take a look outside the station through a window...or like if theres going to be a 'viewing' room which will allow people to look out?

Implementing that would be too much of a hassle, plus people can always fallback on the "more lag" argument

The 'ambulation' suppose to be run on separate servers. Perhaps there would be a problem with it meshing together w/ the regular servers to give the outside view.

If they did it, it'll probably be fake. __________________________________________________

I dont think that will happen because if i am not wrong the Devs`s stated that the in-Station content of ambulation will be on seperate servers. ---------------------------------------

Currently, no, you won't be able to see out of the station into 'local' space. Whilst this would be awesome, it's not currently feasible. Although, who knows, with time, anything is possible!

Have you considered adding a station service called a "Local Space Scanner" to the station interface that gave a list of players on the same grid as the station every 30 seconds or so? That might be less laggy than offering a full out-of-station view. I get the impression that selecting all of the players in the entire grid is less CPU-intensive than doing so by distance. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

Might get flogged for saying this but:
The Matrix Online was able to do this quite well and I believe it was indeed a change over from diffrent servers. In most interior areas you could look out the window and actually see other players running around doing various activities. -------------------------------- To borrow a phrase:

eve's servers is an overly complex beast to allow such a large verse, because the way ambulation is going to be set up the entier server clusters between the two are probably only going to handle tarnsferring of characters from one server to the other having a live feed between the two would cause lag or congestion which preceives lag and bleh talking about things i dont know about its all i know its not going to be easy until they impliment infinity band and toy around with the equiment.

Edited by: Tamia Clant on 11/07/2008 15:44:31 Aww, I was just about to reply to Winterblink.
Anyway, to stay on topic: Why would ambulation be required to know what ships are outside? I can see the logic behind looking through the window, but from what I've heard pod pilots are going to be in only a very small part of the stations, avoiding contact with the 'normal' people, so you most likely wouldn't be able to peek through the correct window.

My own idea for a station "window": (Has no connection to Ambulation)
Have a button in the station labled "Observation deck".
When this button is pressed, you are "undocked" except the Station itself is your ship.
You can't do anything but look, and to other players in local, the station will still be the same as before.
Play nice while you butcher each other.

Have a camrea on a station take a shot every minute from a fixed point of the view outside, then use this shot as the texture in a skybox in a room within the ambulation server. It gets updated every minute(or whenever you want)and causes no lag cause it just a static texture which gets passed between the servers every minute. Pretty simple to do and it's old tech for anyone who knows anything about making fps's.
