Edited by: Mason Onyx on 13/07/2008 01:59:05 Hi,this topic was created today because I wanted to hopefully get people thinking and maybe those in game development for EVE about possible defensive functions against our enemy from birth, the pirate. I, like so many others, would like to see these guys wiped from the face of the earth just in terms of how many times as a starter pilot I got picked on and had my stash stolen from me with no support whatsoever. So I started thinking and I thought REALLY REALLY hard and came up with an idea so radical and probably more offensive to some depending on where you stand in current world affairs. I think we should be allowed to manufacture Jet Can IEDS and for those of you not familiar with this abbreviation, its also known as a improvised explosive device. I suggest this in favor of the miners because for too long its been way too easy for pirates to acquire goods from those of us who put time and effort into this game only to see it snatched away by those who would cloak in and take what they think is theirs. I put this idea forth because I think now is the time we should see some payback and put more of a challenge into acquiring our goods. I do not however suggest that this item or explosive be readily available to all miners or players because that would destroy the delicate balance. I do however make a point that this be acquired through means of production and thus like all things in eve be available for sale in the market system and for oneself like all other products and ships. I know this idea may greatly bother some depending on your stance in worldly things but also mind you that this is a suggestion for a game that tends to already use real world ideas and politics in a futuristic setting so do think hard and good before posting anything please. I do wish to see what people think and hopefully some EVE developers and as well some as constructive criticism. Thank you for your time in reading this. Sincerely, Mason Onyx

Hope you are not a troll.

As much as I think this is a humorous idea, or a troll I'll reply.
Adding *any* kind of protection to a solo miner is silly and unbalancing. Jetcans are for dropping junk in space, if you (or I for that case) decide to put valuable mins in them it is at our own risk. Anyone can come along and swipe it, with only your weapons to deter them.
Your best hope is to get a friend in a hauler to keep your tasty ore from floating in space.
If thats impracticle, throw some expanders in the lows and expander rigs on and laugh as you can suck down rocks all day before you have to dock.

How is it silly and unbalancing? I mean not all of us want to operate in groups.
I know you think this is making something overpowered but really its not if you are using some common sense in how they get used or created. I already stated that they should make em hard acquire but effective when used. This game has a steep learning curve and should be made more accessible to people and I know they are trying to do that but when players come along and want to start out they should have some kind of protection if not through friends or corps cause lets face it not all people can get into groups whether it be through being different or just prefer to work on their own. This is merely an idea mind you so I already expected this reaction.
I don't intend to overbalance the game but this game needs to make some changes or its always going to limit itself in its player base and I really like this game so its with the best of intentions that I suggest these ideas to somehow give the developers an idea on how to make the start of this game not so daunting and complicated and for making the universe a bit safer, I mean we are in a futuristic age of space exploration I think the people of the real world would of thought of some kind of defense mechanism or security lock by now.
I would also suggest even bigger cans that are password protected and maybe even adding a hacking skill to break a security mechanism so I mean I'm not about working for one side but just changing things cause we all know these things in the game are gonna get old and drab sooner or later.

Let me see if I understand you correctly: you want to be able to rig cans to explode if someone steals from them? How exactly is that supposed to save you? The only thing it would change is that an ore thief/pirate would fly up in a larger ship with a better tank, pop open your can, take a bit of damage and then kill you (because your little booby trap would give you an aggression countdown.)
Oh, another way of reading your idea: if you're asking for a way to rig jet cans so that they explode when someone comes near them ... that's an even worse idea because, well, everyone would be doing it. Remember mines? Whee.

I've two ideas.
Make the Jetcan IED's explosive enough to take out a frigate and watch as the Noob's access their own IED can and blow themselves up. Hell I could watch that for Hours!! ROFLMAO!
Secondly, Why dont you get a tractor beam and tow the jetcan behind you while your mining? You can still be ganked for it but at least you can move around without leavig it behind.....

Rar! use giant secure cans. Or have an alt in an indy insta scooping ore. If you like to mine in low or null use bacon alts to alert you of incomming gangs.
If all else fails, sell time codes! 2billion isk per minute or more, depending on your alt tab skills. Click here for my High Security POS Service

I don't think my idea has anything to do with them being a proxy mine so I think you read that one wrong.
I also dont intend to save anyone I just want to be able to make it so pirates don't get away scotch free all the freakin' time.
This way they take something and it comes at a price.
I also suggested passwords and hacking skills so thus I'm not saying we just make bombs to blow each other up constantly but just put some challenge into what is already way too easy for some. We need something and if that is too much to ask well then I guess I've done all I could to help a class that is struggling to survive in EVE.

Well, a little paying attention fixes your can flipper problem (oh and get away from busy areas too).
and since when are miners struggling? Have you SEEN the mineral quantities people sell in the mineral channel? Have you SEEN the quantities of minerals on the market? I saw someone selling 3 BILLION trit in channel over the weekend. Dosen't sound like those miners were struggling. They were probably mining away from busy areas and paying attention to their surroundings.
And it is easy to make a pirate pay a price to attack you.. try this, have a fighting ship cloak, and when you get someone flip our can, uncloak and shoot them. not only does the pirate lose their ship, but you get killmails! Eve has an answer in game already to deal with lots of the problems that come up all the time on the boards, so use them. --- Ishikari Industries Researchers of Ship, Ammo and Rig BPO's Visit our Shop Today! |
