Speaking from personal experience, yes it can be very profitable, but don't expect to do anything BUT invention with that character if you plan to make serious isk.
Thanks for the Maulus BPO nerf! :D |

I've made a good 5-10b off of invention.
The key is to use your brain, and do your homework before you run off and invent.

As with any "is it profitable" question - if you're not able to work out and answer this for yourself, you really shouldn't be going into invention in the first place. I don't want to come across as high and mighty, but it's simply a case of looking at the cost of inputs, looking at what the end result sells for, then calculating what level of success you'd need to break even. From that point you can look at one of the various invention guides to get an estimate on chance of success based on skills and work out at what point it becomes profitable.
If you're not able/willing to do this yourself, it does not bode well for your success in any market-related venture. Especially as people doing well in any area have no real incentive to give away information and tell you the truth, so in theory you can expect to get deliberate misinformation, information from those with no experience, and generic information of no practical significance. Just a friendly tip.

So very very true. My advice would be to study the supply and demand and economics of wares and goods in the real world, then try and transfer your knowledge to make money in Eve.

invention CAN be profitable, don't just blindly invent a random item, do your market research first, if necessary manipulate the price of the item a 'little' (though this isn't very newbie friendly), also expect others to jump on the opportunity, what is profitable today may not be tomorrow and it may be again the next week or month... or year
