Recently I've started using torpedoes, and so far I like them. Even with relatively bad skills I find them usefull when supporting someone in a mission or for ratting solo. Big bang and nice effects are awesome as well :)
Now I've obviously started doing some math on how to increase my torp-range and currently my range is: 9.27 sec flighttime x 2535 m/s velocity = 23,5 km appr. However, I need to get within 20 Km's of a target to actually hit it? I even tested it on roids that were 22 and 23 km away from me, no hits. How is this possible?

missiles dont come out whit max speed. they need to accelerate. that means you have bit over 20km range ---------------------------------- Fighting for Minmatar o7 Yes... this is my main. Extreme Troll Slayer...

First, can you shoot roids? Second, I believe missles have to speed up after fired.

I would guess that missiles (especially the heavy ones) have to accelerate first before reaching top speed. Sometimes iirc you notice a slight "lag" when you launch your missiles, where they stand still for a moment. However, you somehow are losing one second in flighttime. Also consider that when orbiting your missiles have to align first as they fire from in front of your ship.

Yes it is possible to shoot roids, did so in 0.0 :)
Thanks for the explanation :)

Erm, yeah, missiles need to accelerate, there is a big hit on fligh time for larger missiles..

The rough acceleration is something like half velocity for a second, then full velocity after that.
Rule of thumb, call your max range 80%-90% of what you calculate it to be.

By my rough calculations, it's about 88%.
That is, EFT shows 35km for my alt's Golem. Realistically, it hits to 31, maybe 31.5km.

EFT shows 61km for my golem, but about 53km is my limit :D
