Hey they there everyone!
I have just finished training interceptors IV, which along with Gallente Frigate 5, puts me in place to fly Gallente interceptors.
I had a few questions about tactics and fittings, and I was wondering if anyone could help me with either answers, or general advice.
- How do I prevent myself from being obliterated by drones?
- Blasters or rails?
- In turn, does getting webbed mean death û or is it possible to orbit at close distances from larger targets and survive?
- How does tactics between the Ares and Taranis differ?
- In turn, what would be a typical setup for either of these ships?
Thanks in advance for any help and advice!

Taranis is generally used for in-your-face blaster dps (which has its place) it can be an effective rail-boat with high-skills and experience though.
Ares is a pure tackler.
General rule of thumb is to stick a Damage control on the taranis and get in web range to melt other ceptors.
I'd recommend trying the ares as the cheaper of the 2 until you get used to being fragile in a ceptor - since dealing with drones is something that comes with experience. It also lets you operate outside neut range, but it's a gang ship. -------

Edited by: tarin adur on 16/07/2008 17:10:26 - Run, kill them or just microwarp drive away
- Depends,Ares = Rails(or no guns ta all tbh) and Taranis = Blaster
- Using transversal can be very effective, however under a web it might be difficult to keep that high enough to avoid anything but battleship sized guns, on the other hand, if you have blasters then webbing is good =)
- Ares stays at 15-25 and spews 1 missile, mainly a perma-tackler,orbits very fast, Taranis is general blaster-boat, packing between 100-200 dps depending on your fit, you'll want to web them.
- many threads on that.
Edit - Where do you find Ares cheaper then taranis? i get my Ares for 10-12 mil and taranis for 8, lol.

I'm no ceptor expert myself, but to avoid drones--go fast. The ares is oriented towards tackling, the ranis is more for pew pew. Rails are more common on the ares, blasters on the ranis. A blaster ranis is close range do or die, so you can expect to be webbed but it's a pretty tough little boat.

Do not underestimate a Railranis.
Its is THE perfect drone killer and if fit and flown well, against other inties it melts faces. That said, the blaster Ranis with a tech 2 fit rivals a faction crow

blasteranis is the most hilarious ship in the game to fly. It's a proper suicide ship, but with a damage modifer over 10 on small neut blasters it puts out silly damage.

once you hit 150dps on guns with the taranis you're fine - more than that is overkill at the expense of other things on the ship. -------

If your green with frig pvp just use long range weapons on it and have your orbit between 15-20km. Once you get the hang of it, go for a blaster taranis.

Rail ranis all the way tbh.
Blaster only when solo. Problem with blaster is you're in web range and if the target has a web you're pretty much ****ed.
Rail ranis is fun (not as fun as blasters) but it has far more survivability.
Ares has crap DPS but is fast as hell and with the extra few KMs you get on the point it makes a perfect Nano gang tackler

I agree with the conventional wisdom regarding using the Ares as a pure tackler and a Taranis with blasters for solo PvP.
However, I feel my beloved Taranis is being sold short here, with comments about it dying if webbed, etc. In my blasteranis, I use a pulse or two of the MWD to get in range (real close), then with orbit set at 500 open up with small T2 blasters and drones. Now, while it is true that many ships can web me and inflict damage on me, it is also true that many, many of them die before they inflict enough damage to kill me. This is because the Taranis can dish out impressive DPS, while any ship with guns bigger than small or missiles bigger than light precision is going to have a hard time giving back a fraction of that DPS.
The blasteranis does not rely solely on angular velocity to avoid taking damage; in many instances, to maximize my own DPS, I'll just approach my target, then stand right there bashing away. The Taranis, like any interceptor, also enjoys a very small signature radius, reducing damage from missiles and lengthening most ships' locking time.
Finally, in a pinch the Taranis can fall back on more conventional interceptor tactics: engage the MWD, push the orbit out so it ends up around 20km, and wait for backup.

You should be safe from drones most of the times, Lrg drones = less than 1000km/s med drones = 2000-2500km/s lgt drones = 3800-5000km/s
warriors are the fast ones, and watch out for drone boats (domi/ishtar) that often have drone speed mods on.
generally you should look to train up faster than 6k so should be fine. Only thing to watch for are t2 sentry drones. don't just run away from these, use your transversal as they have insane tracking and range.
you could just shoot them while in your ranis, but be easier to get out of disruptor range and warp out then back in.

- Blasters or rails?
For a noob, go rails in a ranis till your comfortable flying in a gang. Your giong to die lots anyways but this way your'll learn to keep your range and dictate the fightmore. Don't use t2 ammo on your t2 guns, spike massively gimps your tracking. Using iron for high transversal, and antimater (faction) on the limit of your fall off (staying out of web range!)
ares guns wont matter till you are much more skilled (your main goal it to point and hold on!)
Originally by: mistersparky

hail the noob that puts 2xLSE on his vaga! so, you have a web and anything crusier size and above dosen't.... get the feck in there!! orbit at 500 turn mwd off and start chewing away. If they using missiles :( or 125s with iron :( your just going to have to keep your speed up. but if not they wont be able to hit you. Even though your going really slow, your orbiting the central object fast cause your really close to it. Infact your prob orbiting faster than if you were 15k from it traveling 10km/s
IF.... they using large guns, you will be fine still with mwd on and orbiting close. But the are so many other factors like Neuts and drones and missiles that means this shiit is suicidal (which might be good to develop as a new taranis pilot :P )
Originally by: mistersparky
- How does tactics between the Ares and Taranis differ?
massively.... ones a tackler ones a ganker. But you'll see more of that the more you get involved and learn the ceptors class.
Originally by: mistersparky
- In turn, what would be a typical setup for either of these ships?
hmmmmmm... this really depends on your role/skills/aims as a ceptor pilot. the are standards that everyone will post. Most will post as LVL 5 eft warriors. The main thing you need to look at is keeping your cap up. Rails and blasters eat cap, most gal inties eat cap. Your cap is going to be a major issue compaired to any other inty. If you put a cap recharger or cap relay on your either gimping your lows (speed/dam mod) or gimping your mids (tackle mod). only skilled inty pilots or 'gank gang' (really quick killing so no need to worry) ships wont need cap mods.
and depends on your isk resource too... as some mwd use less cap, rigs can ofset your speed gimp, 3% cheap implants can offset speed gimps... the are ways around it. |

Another important thing is to set the orbit distance to a smaller value than you actually want. When you want to stay in scramble range (24 km) put it to 18000, when you wanna get in web range put it to 5000 and when you wanna be in blaster range put it to 500. You usually end up at a bigger range than you wanted as your inertia drives you out.
The values vary of course according to the speed of your target ship.
Have fun!

setups for a noob
my assumption is you have few secondary skills (support skills) but be capable to train to T2 mods in short time period
Taranis (rail) as a ranged tackler your web is not so needed, and you will need to put on a cap recharge to maintain tackle. Note you will also need to train 'advanced weapons upgrade' lvl 3.
[Taranis, Noob rail] Nanofiber Internal Structure II Overdrive Injector System II Overdrive Injector System II
1MN MicroWarpdrive II Warp Disruptor II Cap Recharger II
125mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge S 125mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge S 125mm Railgun II, Antimatter Charge S [empty high slot]
[empty rig slot] [empty rig slot]
DO NOT USE GUNS - when tackling to maintime a longer MWD+Point still support arrives. Unless ofc fighting another inty! then you go for it! but cap will last under 2mins which means your dead or he is :P
fly this baby while finding a setup you can aim for. And train up!
I personally fly Ares, faction fit mids and optimal gun config. But i have trained up and enjoy most tackling at +30k range and laughing at the neuting BS that can't do anything but die to my back up. Or the nanofudge due to my nice overheated web :P
either way, enjoy your inty adventure, you'll have some of the best fun flying these! |

50m/s (noMWD and webbed) is huge transversal when at 500m distance.
