Hello EVE Players! Basicly i've started the game and so far its pretty amazing. New to the whole MMO thing and was wondering if anyone has any helpful suggestions/tips on good things to do when starting the game as a fresh rookie. (First of all is it wise to spec your character any specific way?) (is it good to start as a mining/trader guy or as the guy with pewpew cannons that plunders everything in sight?) I've been reading the forums and am amazed at how helpful everyone is so i thought i my as well ask for some help as well so i could get a good start

Point 1 - Balanced is best, with Charisma as the least useful.
Point 2 - It doesn't really matter. You'll buy at least 100 skills if you play for a while, so what you start with is peanuts. So if you want to do one thing, then change your mind, you can do so fairly easily. Start with whatever sounds enjoyable, and if you don't like it, buy some new skills and train them.

Every time you undock, you are potentially dead.
Even if not engaged in wars; even if just a miner or hauler minding your own business; even if staying in Concord-protected space - you can be a target.
Long way of saying "Don't undock with what you can't afford to lose", the basic rule of EVE.
_______
As far as how to start?
Do what you want to do, and train relevant skills as you continue that path. You can always change your mind later, and train for other careers. You're playing for your enjoyment, right?
Join a good player-corp, especially if looking to get involved with combat or piracy. Newer pilots can be immediately effective, as part of a team.
I'm rambling. |

There's no easy way to answer this question.
You can keep taking missions if you enjoy it.
There is no leveling in Eve.
Making money is one of your primary goals, so yes.
The last part is impossible to answer without asking, what do you want to do? It's no different than asking this question in real life. What you should do is what you want to do. Are you enjoying it? If yes, continue. If no, do something else. That's really what Eve is all about.

Well, I can recommend reading the DGAF Newbie Guide - there are public articles on just about anything and if you register with the site, you can get individual help too.

Edited by: Tzar''rim on 17/07/2008 08:47:06 There's a lot of ways to make money in EVE, also it is NOT a PVE game... playing it that way is boring and just not fun. The trick is to start interacting with others and to invest effort into learning and becoming better (tactics/experience wise). To get into the corp/war/0.0 early on is to specialise in a ship that's useful for those parts of the game and then apply for a proper corp.
Please don't mine or run missions :( it's such a waste of time, every day I see the cattle doing their mission/mining runs "to make money so they can start PVPing later" while they're training up for a rorqual...
Trust no one, be paranoid. Also NEVER assume things. Question, ask, learn, know, plan, act... in THAT order. Any other way will probably hurt you in some way rather quickly.

Don't let anyone tell you what you SHOULD do. Just explore all the things you'd LIKE to do. And have fun :) -------------------------------------------------- If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles - Sun Tzu |

That's your experience. Other people's mileage may vary. EVE is not a PVE game. EVE is also not a PVP game. It's not any particular type of game, and there is no One True Path to Wisdom, Enlightenment and Enjoyment of EVE.
Quote: Please don't mine or run missions :( it's such a waste of time, every day I see the cattle doing their mission/mining runs "to make money so they can start PVPing later" while they're training up for a rorqual...
For many thousands of players, it's none of these things and I'm sure they take exception to the suggestion that somehow, what you and other people do is better than what they do. I'm not saying "You ebil pirate!", nor am I crying 'carebear' tears. I believe that there should be PVP, there should be risks, and that players like yourself make for a more interesting game environment by providing that element of danger.
But that doesn't make those of us who choose to mine, mission-run and engage in many of the other 'peaceful' non-PVP orientated activites lesser players than you. Indeed, without all of us 'cattle' pirates and ninja salvagers would have a lot less fun, non?
So, this isn't a flame or a personal attack; I simply strongly disgaree with your position and think that you do yourself a disservice by being derisive about the activities of other players.
To the OP: Please do what you enjoy doing in EVE, whether it be PVP, PVE, mining, trading, manufacturing or a mix of them all. You'll have fun finding out which of these things you want to do long-term and, over time, your goals and choices will change.
