I get to the point where you get the summary and pick the name, and it stalls out at "Fetching Data."
Is this happening to anyone else?
Thanks,

It's happened to me on occasion, usually after spending 10 or more minutes at the "Appearance" step. I'm not positive, but I think that going back a and forward every couple of minutes will keep it from happening without resetting all of your appearance choices. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

Indeed, there has been something weird with a time-out in player creation for a while now.

I don't think this is the time-out issue.
Would you by any chance have the cache set to "none"? If so, setting it to a higher value will most likely fix the issue.

This fixed it for me when I had the problem a couple of weeks ago.

Quote: check the settings in your prefs.ini file, as there could be a setting that is incorrect or missing. To find the prefs.ini file, follow the steps listed below
1. Click Start 2. Click on My Computer 3. Double click on C: 4. Double click on Documents and Settings 5. Select 'Tools' from the top menu in the window. 6. Click 'Folder Options' 7. Click the View tab 8. Look for the button that says 'Show Hidden Files and Folders' 9. Click Apply then Ok 10. Select the user name you are signed in as (If you don't have one available double click Administrator) 11. Double click Local Settings 12. Double click Application Data 13. Double click CCP 14. Double click EVE 15. Double click settings 16. Double click the file named prefs 17. Add the line "resourceCacheSize=128" in alphabetical order within that file (only what is between the quotes, not including them)
Once this is done, save the file then start EVE and create your character.

That worked, thanks.
Now if I can figure out why I get the BSOD when running two instances of EvE I'll be set. ;)

well , there are 3 things you can do about that , first two you probably all ready did ,
download the optional upgrade that CCP released a while ago if you haven't all ready , it suppose to fix exactly this issue ,and it did for me , you can download it by pressing esc in game and switching to the general setting tab .
the second thing you can do if you haven't all ready is change the cache size to off through esc / graphics & display tab in game .
the last thing you can do is kind of ridiculous , but it seems to help me keep the BSOD away on my lap top , just minimize the EVE window every 2 minutes , every time you minimize it it resets the memory use , and eve is memory hog ,so at least on my lap top it helps to keep BSOD away ,not 100 % fail prof ,but it seems to does have effect .
doing all this things i can run more then 2 clients on a laptop that wasn't able to run more then one at a time without getting BSOD.

issue has existed since EVE was made. It's cause the game goes to sleep waiting on you getting your hair just right and cause it dosen't talk to the server during that it cuts your connection after some time ...

Eve needs a keep-alive packet every 3 minutes or so, if nothing else to keep the connection live. I don't know how many times i've been on a covops watching a gate, only to find out that a hostile fleet came and went while my client was timed out and silently closed the connection. Usually only after you do <something>, such as double clicking to change direction, does the client try to contact the server and finally realize "oh shit, i'm not connected", and "crash" out of the game. :-/ for now i've resorted to the "Keep the help channel open and minimized" fix so that there is always something incoming to my client, but in cases such as character generation, the connection will silently close and then crash the game AFTER you try to send a command and the client finally realizes that it no longer has an active connection to the server. -- this is my sig. |
