I remember one of the devs posting and saying that they bought the RAMSAN-400 because, "it s the fastest storage there is."
Well, now its considered "entry-level"
So when will we see the RAMSAN-440?

If I remember correctly, one of the devs said that the database performance is actually fairly good, the servers are the current bottleneck. So they may not need another/newer RAMSAN for awhile. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

Tarminic hit the nail on the head. Right now the issue is in communication between servers and they're looking at some fancy stuff for that. Why upgrade something that isn't holding you back when there's already a bottleneck somewhere else preventing you from fully utilizing the current ramsans? ---- VHI - We Haul Your Cargo For Free ---- We Miss you Red 7. |

I really have no clue about this stuff, so enlighten me if i am wrong, but isn't CCP always complaining about too much DB calls? Or is this regulated with some other tech?

Is it a bad thing that I saw RAMEN and thought that CCP had become the stereotype of drinking beer, eating ramen and playing video games? Signatures are annoying...kinda like me. |

The DB is fine. The trouble is in sending all those calls from the DB server to the client. From what I understand it is the physical connections between servers that is the current bottleneck. ---- VHI - We Haul Your Cargo For Free ---- We Miss you Red 7. |

When you say the physical connection, are we talking about remote connections or CQ inter server connections? because I can't see the long range one being the problem with the cheap price of fibre now, and can't see the problem with the CQ one, simply have more parallel connections.
of course I don't know what I'm talking about so... Signatures are annoying...kinda like me. |

The current bottleneck has 2 sides: 1. Doing calculations fast enough concurrently(Can only run at one core at once, at present) 2. The inter-node access time and speed.
Eve runs excellent on 56k modem. So the server <-> client is not a big issue. But you are right the physical connections between each node, is a bottleneck

They always try and keep their DB calls as optimized as possible. It's good for the servers in addition to the database - remember that I/O between the DB and server happens at the server level too, not just the database. Plus, I imagine they're trying to stay ahead of the curve. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

You can't just update every time the next version becomes avaialable, you would be updating every few months. Imagine updating your processor in your own PC as soon as the next fastest processor comes out. Not only would it cost a fortune but you would never really appreciate the difference as the extra speed would be marginal.
The Ramsan is fine, it's the raw processing power and datastream that are the problem now. It's no good upgrading to faster Ram if your processor and datastream can't use all of the speed of the ram you already have. It's like upgrading from a 10gb to a 100gb network router while you still only have a 1gb network card in the PC.

After a little digging...
[June 2008 - Ongoing] Infiniband Internal Test Cluster is live, development ongoing
[June 2008 - Ongoing] Cisco virtualisation project underway (speeds up Eve website)
[September 2007] 420 CPU cores housed in IBM X-SERIES 3950 and BladeCenter servers
[August 2007] CCP has deployed a fourth RamSan-400 taking SSD capacity to 256GB
[July 2007] Database upgraded to Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Enterprise SP2
[July 2007] Core engine upgrade to Python 2.5 with Stackless 3.1
[March 2007] CCP confirms they are moving everything to a 64 bit architecture
[November 2006] Third RamSan-400 deployed, cluster confirmed at 168 nodes.
[March 2006] Second RamSan-400 deployed
[October 2005] First RamSan-400 deployed
I hope one of the devs will confirm the above and maybe post something about the technical stuff for us geeks :)

If I am not mistaken then the RAMSAN-440 has no infiniband interface. And since CCP is building their supercomputer on infiniband it wouldn't make any sense to buy stuff which doesn't support infiniband, would it? Also as mentioned, the bottleneck is not the RAMSAN-400 currently, they are working fine!

I remember them talking about EVE having more code then Windows and TQ equipment weighing in at over a ton
But I couldn't find it when I went searching
So I hope my memory is still in good shape or I'll have to start training it again

Infiniband would facilitate communication between nodes, not between the nodes and the database. As such, there would be no such thing as an "infiniband interface" for it. ---------------- Play EVE: Downtime Madness v0.83 (Updated 7/3) |

God I'd love for you to be making upgrade decisions where I work. We replace internal systems through "upgrades" every quarter it seems, and no one ever knows how to use the current one very well. Good point.

I'm guessing #1 is why mods won't activate and #2 is the reason why jumping/docking/etc is such a problem?
Musing about inifiniband I wonder if they're going to use it to try to cloud compute the calculations.

No, at least, not anytime soon(tm). IB might allow them to have grids on different physical hosts though which would help reduce system wide lag.
I wish they would at least try and get one of the 6Ghz Power (based) machines from IBM (as a loan) and see how much faster the combat code runs. With IB they should then eventually be able to shunt lagging grids to the super fast machines... Rabies is unexpected ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ dealing with the UNDERPANTS of eve since 2004 |
