Edited by: Qwakrz on 27/05/2004 21:33:03 I have just noticed this on the eve-i CCP Message of the day
No Downtime this Friday, 27th May on TQ servers
Ok, 2 things. Its Thursday 27th May today, the message changed today so its current.
Is this going to be an on-going thing, if so can we also have the message shown at the top of the news item ingame so we can keep track of it.
Having a downtime every day was nice as it was regular. If it is going to be continuing can we have some notice before a downtime so we can plan ahead (pref a day or two's notice)

When something is reported as a news item that means it is new...differant.
As "no downtime" has been reported as news it is an uncommon occurance. Thus, don't expect this to become a regular thing, especially with all the changes coming the next several months.

KROM has hi-jacked the downtime for 5/27/04 and we are holding it until we can find an opportune time to unleash it.
We will ransom the downtime monster for 1 billion isk, convo me in-game if you are interested.

Logical, and yet this is the second day running there will be no downtime. (They didn't report it yesterday because the decision wasn't taken until half an hour after DT was supposed to start.)
So maybe it is going to be, if not everyday, then at least a fairly regular occurrence. If they can go 2 days without DT, they can surely go without for at least 2 in every 3 days from now on...

CCP has stated in the past that they do want to remove as many of the daily downtimes as possible at some point. I think i remember them saying that they would like to get it down to once a week. This could be the start of CCP trying to do that. --------------------------------------------- Engineers motto; If it doesn't fit, force it. If it breaks it needed replacing anyway. |

Downtime is reassuring.
The raiding stuff should take care of that... tape backups once a week should be enough, in case a small meteor hits the server room or something.

I think, that CCP just tries to remove the 20-min DTs, which are on tuesdays, thursdays, saturdays and sundays. I heard, that these were only reboots of the server. In the DTs on mondays, wednesdays and fridays there are DB-services scheduled. I think in these DTs there is also the reseeding of the asteroids.

no RAID does not replace tape backups. if a database is corrupted beyond possible repair, the RAID won't help you (since the data has been written wrong...on all Disks). and imagine the outcry if you have to roll back one week then
but you don't need downtime for backups anyway.
no police, no summons, no courts of law; no proper procedure, no rules of war; no mitigating circumstance; no lawyers fees, no second chance! |

Downtime is reassuring.
1. You can back up SQL servers on-the-fly.
2. Forced downtimes aren't reassuring - they scream to me that there's horrible memory leaks, and they need to reboot the system to get rid of them. Which again smacks of shoddy programming.
Now, I think it's excellent they're cutting back on the downtimes. I look forward to the time (maybe) when we only need a downtime to patch the servers :)

1. you can, but nobody with any sense does with an important production system of any significant size, but then i work with finance systems so perhaps they are more 'important'. I would never backup a substantial database without first booting all the users. Ever tried restoring a backup with half-completed transactions? You should. It smells of wee.

I can't believe it. People used to scream about downtime being too long: Quote: "Downtime is supposed to be 60 minutes but today's was 62 minutes 43 seconds! I want that time credited to my account!!!"
Now they're complaining because there wasn't any today.

Just goes to show people are never satisfied with what they have.

Who's been complaining? Evidently nobody in this thread, cos I already read through it all.

Well can't blame the roid can you? I mean after the merciless roidicide committed by thousands of Eve players on a daily basis, one should expect some kind of repercussion at some time or later!
. . . Awaiting more and hi-bit rate music - with bated breath ... |
