Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 28/07/2008 10:37:25 Edited by: Meiyang Lee on 28/07/2008 10:36:05 Cryptic Studios (also developing Champions Online) has recently launched the new Star Trek Online Website, not much yet apart from a couple of screenshots (although what is that 'shroom forest doing there...) and a little info about the game. Looks like they're going for both starship and away team play. Curious to see what they'll make of it. More info will be available on August 10th at the official Star Trek Convention in Las Vegas.

Somehow the Star Trek universe really dosen't seem fitting for an MMO. Is it just me? ...

It actually was dead/declared vaporware when the previous developers went bust. Cryptic probably snapped up the rights and work done cheaply and is now busy resurrecting it.

It's not just you I think. I doubt it's something i'd even consider dropping EVE for, but I'm curious what they are going to make of it. PvP probably won't feature though. (Star Trek is to carebear-ish for that.) And while I don't know what time-frame the MMO will be set in, but judging from the ship designs it's pretty late, that means the Klingons and Federation are allies. So no PvP options there with the only 2 known playable factions.

I have trouble imagining how they'd make a MMO out of this at all, honestly. Kill X redshirts to get better translating software? Fly around talking a lot for Y hours to get better shields? Turn a computer program alive to "level up?" ---------------- Ambulation Answers

It's just you, they could turn almost anything into a successful MMO with the right implementation. We'll just have to wait and see.
Quote: Surface, Shipboard and Deep Space Adventures: Command your vessel in thrilling space battles, or beam down to planets with your away team for face-to-face confrontations. Missions will take you and your friends into space, planetside and even inside starships!
Sounds good to me.

Champions Online....Isn't that jsut a cheap rippoff of City of Heroes? And this is the same company that is now responsible for Star Trek Online? Looks like a WoW in space is coming our way.

idk... toward the end of TNG (the last credible ST imo), the borg were making things pretty non-carebear... the starship graveyard resulting from the battle for Wolf 359 was pretty epic-looking. Add to that the dominion stuff from DS9 and you've got more pvp stuff - depending on if you can choose to be dominion or w/e... add in the romulan empire... make it take place way after the last real official Star Trek material and you can say the NAP between federation and klingon empire is over and done with and let that tenuous peace collapse into open warfare (blame the vulcans)... plenty of opportunity to write up pvp catalysts if you ask me =)
I've been a big TNG trekkie for a long time and if they managed to put out a GOOD star trek mmo, like, comparable to EVE at least and not just WoW in space, I'd switch for a couple months and check it out... it would need some eve qualities though, like if your galaxy class starship or your bird of prey or w/e gets blown up, that shit is GONE... you better have enough credits/cred to get commissioned into a new ship or you're a sad panda - but idk how they'd work that... guess this is why I'm not a game designer.

I wonder if I can be the Klingons and just sit cloaked above a planet in a Vor'cha class cruiser (the one with the big freaking cannon on the front of it - I probably spelled it wrong) and blow up carebear away teams on crappy planets like the one in the screenshot I linked from orbit... /sigh. Oh well, I didn't wanna roleplay having a birth-defected forehead anyway.
o/ all, bed time
