It seems impossible to run Open Office in the background with the Eve client. Openoffice seeme to either freeze or operate extremely slow while the eve client is running. I had to reformat my computer, and when doing so, I never installed MS Office, just moved everything to Openoffice and made the complete switch to Openoffice at that time. It is nearly impossible to run a spreadsheet I use in game for manufacturing, UNLESS I load Openoffice FIRST and open the spreadsheet.
Anyone encounter this and know a way around? MS Office never had such a problem with me. The aim of politics is to keep the populace alarmed and clamorous to be saved by menacing it with imaginary hobgoblins. The urge to save humanity is a false front for the urge to rule it. |

I have to say that i'm using both open office and Eve on this machine (my older machine, too) just fine. So it's not a general issue, i don't think.
Hope you find some help, though.

Works just fine for me. I use OO spreadsheet quite a bit while running Eve.

Nope, works all fine.
Must be a problem just specific on your machine.

Edited by: Mankirks Wife on 29/07/2008 03:21:58 Openoffice and Eve are both very memory and CPU intensive programs (Calc especially, it seems to recheck every cell on every keystroke).
My single-core laptop with 1 GB of RAM big has issues running Eve and Openoffice at the same time. My dual-core desktop w/ 4 GB of RAM has no problems at all (even with multiple clients running) ---

dualcore (OP and others) ?
amd dualcore driver installed if you got amd one? i notice such things on evemeep and other applications. if i am out of Focus of eve (like pressing the windowskey) instantly speeds up the stuff "not" eve related. Still playing a bit around with setting affirnity to one CPU etc yada.
rumors say it has somethign to do with python not able to use multi threads or dualcore stuff or something like that

Edited by: Ademaro Imre on 29/07/2008 04:07:18 I don't have a dual core. I have an AMD 3400+, 2 gig ram. Everything else can operate in the background.
One I have a eve client running, I can not even get a menu to open up in Open Office, unless I wait 5-10 minutes if I wanted to even open a document. Once I exit Eve, it runs smoothly.
OpenOffice is java based. So I am wondering if it has something to do with the Eve Client and Java. The soffice.bin is only taking 47mb of memory. Firefox is taking over 100Mb with different tabs opens and that runs smoothly. The aim of politics is to keep the populace alarmed and clamorous to be saved by menacing it with imaginary hobgoblins. Openoffice is a Java application. As such, when you run Openoffice, your system loads up the JavaVM to run the application in, and if you haven't checked, the JavaVM is about the hugest slob of a**cr*p you could ever imagine. It probably consumes 250MB+ of ram by itself, and then you have OO on top of that. You can see where this is going - you probably don't have enough system memory to run both and Windows is paging out your memory like Lindsay Lohan trying to get crack.
More memory = better performance.

No it isn't.
Java is used for some wizards and helpers within OO, but you don't need Java to run OO if you feel you can live without those.

Ademaro, what is your CPU occupancy when running EVE? In other words is EVE using 100% of the available CPU time or not, because the client is rather heavy on the CPU side. You can simply open task manager to check this when running. If it is 100%, you could try boosting the priority of the spreadsheet a little to force windows to give it some breathing room.

Ademaro ... i have a feeling this has nothing to do with EVE .. but more with a driver.
Im a system admin myself and we have similair problems with (MS) office applications on computers running one or more of the the following: Bluetooth Nokia PC Suite Office
If you have a bluetooth driver installed it might be just that. It seems office opens all netwerk drives and fails at the point it wants to contact bluetooth network protocols.
It seems that the version of Bluetooth stack is the problem .. updating that might help.
Hope this helps.

Try so set the cache of Eve to low or off. This accelerated a lot of other stuff for me.
