I thought I would come ask the experts as to what the best can flipping techniques were and how to best locate miners that would make good targets. Seems I need to refine my technique as most will not engage me but rather just curse at me in local which is totally unbecoming and downright rude.
I know that by not engaging me they are avoiding valid gameplay tactics and this is quite frustrating!

The best way to get things moving is for you to just lock on to them and fire a couple rounds, usually only 1 will be fine so you can stop there. Once you do this just stay where you are because the combat you are looking for will only be moments away. -Xonox Pulsar Combat Supplies, Director of Production and POS |

I believe I will take this troll given opportunity to present anti-can flipping tactics:
1) the I'm solo and I'm in a hulk method:
Rig you Hulk for cargohold optimization rigs, slap on extenders and travel back and forth a lot. This is of course slower but in a thief infested area and without hauler support a much safer way to go. Barges are not that much slower than haulers after all and you safe the initial trip out and back to switch to the hauler.
2) the I'm using a hauler alt in a thief infested area.
Use a single GSC. Anchor and PW it. Use it as a transfer point between your hauler and your miner when thieves are around (since only you and your alt can open it up you can transfer 3.9k of ore at a time). Of course this hogs the hauler. But with an alt you were probably doing that anyways. And the advantage of the GSC here is that although you can't put a jet can in it, in combination with your hulk's hold it will usually allow you to stock pile 2 cycles worth of ore so it allows for up to 8 minutes to deliver the ore and get back.
3) The ambush - only useful if REALLY thief infested areas.
In this case you use stealth bombers and such. Have the combat ships in the same corp drop the cans your miners are jetting into. This allows the combat pilots to get the aggro once the can is flipped instead of the gun-less mining ships. Be prepared to handle up to battleship sized opponents. In case the griefer is flying a shuttle but has battleship backup in gang (a frequent occurrence I'm sad to say). The reason this is only really good in thief infested areas is that it is an expensive use of manpower.
4) The make him work for his cans.
Exploration and mission running provide relatively safer options for jet can mining. Obviously you can be scanned down. Most griefers of course prefer to go for belt miners since they are easy to find. Remember most of em are lazy and why bother scanning you down when there are jet cans in the belts just ready to be picked on. Some missions are rather convinient as they re-pop the roids totaly full after downtime. Nothing is more useful than having 10 50k omber roids waiting for you every day (that's 30k m3 per roid). Admittedly they can flip your cans, but at lest you made em work for it.
And remember it's better just to give up the ore and curse the griefer than to let him get your ship. Never let em get the barge!

My favorite mining crew: 2 hulks with ~80% shield resists, loaded with racks of t2 drones (L5 in combat, scout, interfacing, nav, durability, specialization), and a mammoth set up for tackling/passive targetting. I'd think twice before flipping that can...the mammy has you locked before you even got to the can, and you didn't see the lock. After the kill, dock and log off
This setup does work. won 5 griefers from rookie ships(!) to t2 cruisers from my 'poor defenseless' mining barges
As to how to improve flipping: use bigger ships. use a recon to member-warp a hauler point blank. use a whole fleet of civ-laser haulers (I've seen that one done, was pretty hilarious seeing 15 blinky-red badgers )

1) Find 0.5 system with said miner in it. 2) Full rack of Medium Neutron Blasters and full rack of cheap cheap damage mods on an Insured Brutix 3) 10 rounds of CN Antimatter each gun. 5x Med drones too 4) Lock, Pew-Pew, Explosions (yours and miners)
Usually works.
On a serious note, many of the high sec residents are there to avoid conflict of all sorts, so you may not get a lot of success in can-flipping. __________________________________________________

um... wut?! Last I checked, both aggression and retaliation were elective in any PVP environment. Careful with that attitude. You may flip the wrong can and find a whole armada uncloak and pod your "vertical smile". |

Did that all the time with my Rokh equipped with 2 Mining Lasers and the rest Neutrons and Scrams/Webs. Didn't fool all of them (you could see the guns on the Rokh if you had half a brain) but some of them are like moths to the flame when they see a Mining Laser and can within 1500m of each other. One of them even threatened to petition me for 'exploiting' can flipping like that 'to get PvP'

ALT+F4 to open ship scanner...
find a Hulk with the probe, and then where you're RIGHT on top of him, align to a body and just before warping out fire on him... this will get him concordokken and you can come back for the can.
100% guaranteed to work! LMK how it went!

I think this would be your most successful and deadly tactic of all to use against these Wussie Miners. Once you flip that can and they don't start firing back - open that petition and start writing up the incident. I'm sure the GM's have had just about enough of these Miners in their damn ~95mil defenseless mining ships just sitting around and ruining your fun. Who are they to ruin your game play experience like this?!?!
They start complaining at you in Local - laugh and tell 'em to fire up YouTube and start using that 'When Carebears Attack' as a training video for the next time you come 'round to harass and grief them..

And Hulk's with CE II's and Macro's. It's people like Vert here that give me an understanding for Macro Miners. Anyone who wants to whine and complain about Macro Miners just needs to read Vertical Smile's ( And all the other can-flippers ) post and understand 'why'...

Edited by: Prolapse on 01/08/2008 06:41:44 The most satisfying way by far to deal with this issue is to flip the can yourself using a combat character in a bad ass ship with a cloak. your miner can still fill this can.
Then simply cloak and await the thief - kind of like fishing.
Everyone wins - you get either to mine unhinderd or to gain retribution on the can flipper without risking your barge. The Can flipper gets some pvp action and becomes less bored.

my faviourt anti-ore theif tactic was have someone in a battleship lock everyone who came into the belt that way soon as they started flashing red they could be webbed and scrammed and be busy being shot at alot before they even get to aligne.
ofcause if they happen to show up in a freighter and park next to the can with a friend sticking a half dozen webs on them then they might get away.... never seen that happen though

Can flipping is a tactic to use on new players, bud. It's usually done by fairly new players too, or older players who are content to stay on the bottom wrung of the pirating ladder.
It's a rite of passage for most miners to have their can flipped while out in their mining frig or cruiser in high-sec. If you're out trying to can-flip 5 year old players in their hulks who are most likely just supplimenting the trit they need for production, you're ****ing into the wind. They all know the tactic, and won't respond, or will kill ya in various ways.
From the nature of your question it looks like you're fairly new yourself. After a certain point, if you want a life of crime (and the PvP that comes with it) in new eden, you need to venture out into low-sec space and start your pirating career proper. Look in the recruiting section and join up with a pirating corp.
Good luck.
