Creative X-fi gamer fatality pro doesn't seem to work properly at all...
i updated my drivers several times, removed them all then installed the newest... the sound glitches were gone. When i turned my computer back on the same nasty sound bug was back!
VIsta x64, SP1 with all updates, latest drivers for all the devices.
Intel Core2 DUO, 3,16 4 GIGs RAM DDR 2 1200 X48 MB, gigabyte x48-DS5 - this might be the source of evil nvidia 9800 GX2 Creative X-fi, gamer fatality pro - this is known to be malfunctioning under Vista
ok, i know that Microsoft is full of ****, but the question is, is it the Motherboard fault as it is unable to service the PCI requests; or is it related to Vista exclusively
I like the sound quality of X-fi when it works... but the problem seems to return with every reboot. There is no hope and no answer from creative or any other tech specialists.
should i just throw away my mother board and use a pentium III where there were no sound glitches... maybe downgrading to windows XP will solve half of the problem related to windows.

Strange behaviour. I've got this setup and so far no sound problems like you:
Intel Core2 Duo E6850 @ 3.00 GHz 8 Gb DDR2 RAM Gigabyte P35-DS3 Nvidia 8800GT Creative X-Fi XtremeGamer Vista 64-bit updated fully
If I open Sound in Control Panel, Vista tells me "Windows has detected that audio enhancements for the folllowing device is causing problems: Speakers (Creative SB X-FI) Would you like to disable Driver Enhancements for this device YES/NO".
If I click NO and get into settings, the first tab with "Playback" and the speakers icon, click it and choose Properties. The tab "Sound Blaster" has a checkbox to disable "X-Fi CMSS 3D", which seems to cause trouble under Vista 64-bit.
Try disable it and se if it helps.
Earlier versions of Windows had a slider for sound hardware performance, I can't find this in Vista.

i am trying to assign IRQ requests manually but Vista doesn't have it
Vista shares IRQ of high priority devices, which according to experts may be the cause of the problem. USB, SATA controllers and a few other devices seem to share the same IRQ 19 with the PCI slot 2... this is where my sound card is located.
Changing BIOS settings, and disabling the shared devices didn't seem to work.
I may as well revert back to XP for 5th time in the row...

when i uninstall nvidia graphics card, the crackling magically dissapears
now it's a choice, no sound or no graphics =)
must be a conflict in resources, which causes the graphics card to dominate over audio card

Is there room to move the soundcard to another PCI-slot?

This is a Vista problem. Creative disabled some abilities in the X-Fi series when it came to Vista.
There was a guy who made a set of updated X-Fi drivers that fixed the problems with Vista, but Creative shut him down. You can might can ask around to see if anyone has these drivers and see if they could send you a set to try out.

You're refering to the missing "audio enhancements" in Vista 64-bit, right? They work just fine in Vista 32-bit (to my knowledge that is).

a new update...
my motherboard comes with Realtek HD audio... should offer supreme sound quality... properly uninstalled all drivers, then provided the latest version to all devices.
X-fi is disabled, but HD audio features 14 times more crackling than the X-fi... it seems that the problem is in VIsta audio implementation in general... not a single audio device wants to perform simple music playback.
abandon Vista until they finally release a new OS which supports direct3D gaming... Vista has gimped audio environment according to tech specialists
and i simply wanted to listen to music! btw, XP had no such problems... Vista is junk

Vista has a different audio enviroment, that's for sure.
I've got none of the bad behaviour you describes, not matching hardware but similiar, that makes me draw the conclusion that it's not only Vista to blame.

All creative soound cards under vista Have to run under an xp emulation program called alchemy. ( Its now free )
Simply put Creative cards are Not vista compatible. ( mainly due to vista itself btw)
Should you want a vista compatible card then go for the Asus Xonar range.
Just thought this may help

My X-Fi XtremeGamer works just fine under Vista 64-bit. To my knowledge only one (1) audio effect is disabled because of issues mentioned below.
Alchemy is for enabling DirectSound3D with Vista and certain Creative-cards.

I reinstalled Vista x64... clean drivers, X-fi drivers, mother board drivers, nvidia drivers... crackling appeared soon after Nvidia driver installation.
I disabled all useless devices and freed up extra IRQ, now i had a separate IRQ for almost every device... the sound crackling was only slightly less noticeable
HD realtek audio had the same problem...
Vista has no sound... simple, vista doesn't work yet.
And this means no playback, no matter how hard i try to make it work. And i only need to listen to WAVE files... which is not possible.

Strange problem. Gets me thinking of driver and/or hardware issues more than the operating system (because both sound cards acts the same).
Maybe you should stick to XP instead?
Edit: Got some hits googling about Gigabyte mobo's and X-Fi, but it seems to affect other motherboards too...

what do you have?
can you post your main computer components?
mine is
MB GigaByte X48-DS5 PC2-8500 1066 Mhz, Kingston 4 x 1 GB 1 Gb PCI-E GeForce 9800GX2, DDR3, Leadtek CPU Intel Core 2 Duo E8500 3,16 Ghz, 6 MB, 1333 Creative X-fi extreme gamere fatality pro SATA-300 Seagate Barracuda 750 HDD
can it be leadtek 'dual processor' video card?
will Vista's audio be made more compatible with 3d audio acceleration?
maybe i have a faulty motherboard, who knows

And it is still MS fault if it turns out to be hardware or driver-related (either one seems more logical now, since it doesn't matter if you switch between onboard and separate soundcard, or different operating systems)?

i can classify this as audio break ups...
should I install nVidia 9800GX2 drivers and the problem appears. Once i remove Nvidia drivers i get smooth playback!
looks like this video card is not very compatible with my system, because neither sound solution works with it.
built-in audio works not, three times more break ups, creative card can't play a simple audio file without pops click and break ups...
i have to blame my current equipment and foul drivers that are available.
Neither Vista x64 nor XP x86 worked, all patches and optimizations included

Start from scratch - do you have your Mobo's latest BIOS? If yes, start the pc and go into BIOS. Make a reset in the way that you load "Default Safe Settings" or what it says.
You may need to reset CMOS, check you Mobo manual for that operation.
Maybe change to ACPI = ON in BIOS also.
Then try moving, if possible, the Creative X-Fi to another PCI-slot.
Install Windows of choice.
Report back...

Edited by: Elysarian on 02/08/2008 12:20:09 It has to be your hardware.
Other people (myself included) are having no problems with Creative cards under Windows - Vista or XP - using the same drivers that you are!
Maybe one or more of the decoupling capacitors is faulty on the PCI bus? (not a thing a normal user can check though, you'd have to swap out the mobo).
Another option is that there's a fault with your 9800 as the fault only appears when you install the ForceWare drivers.

1st success story... i changed SATA controller settings from IDE to AHCI... installed windows XP... disabled all but critical system devices and unplugged all cables... sound works!
no sound distortion crackling or popping, no break-ups or hang ups, just pure smooth sound...
hmm, i tested sound quality on all of my home hardware... Macbook pro 17'' 2006 release... rather poor synthetic sound, Macbook pro 15'' release 2008, natural vivid sound... ipod nano 2006 very quiet and soft sound, precise, but not full of details... Creative X-fi, sounds even better than Macbook pro 15''... CD playback as well as WAVE files sound very natural...
Pioneer DVD player and Pioneer 'Audio Video Receiver' are undisputed leaders, CD audio sounds even better than with creative X-fi...
i tested the sound with sure e4c earphones, quality monitor audio speakers and low-grade soundsticks II from JBL... also Logitech compact headset... well, the results should be accurate.
Pioneer beats them all, X-fi is better than built-in, then the built-in is better than Ipod... all in all there is a lot of work to do, will see if i can make Vista sound work, i am persistent.

2nd success story...
a clean install of Vista x64... all devices disabled (just in case), AHCI turned on in bios, sound works
it could have been the IDE/AHCI issue, then it could extra USB hubs which I unattached this time.
it could have been just a huge mess up with old/new reinstall drivers
