Being Caldari, I fly a lot of shield tanking ships. I currently have my resistance skills all to level 4. I was wondering how many of you shield tankers actually train your resistance skills to level 5. I noticed on EFT that there isn't a lot of difference if I set my skills to level 5. Especially when it comes to the Phoenix...there's no change in the ship's resistance levels.
Thanks for your input.

Edited by: Xano Heroma on 01/08/2008 18:00:10 the shield resistance skills are mainly for passive resist modules.... and most shield tankers use active resist modules... ( the passive ones are generally not good anought ) Especially on a Phoenix... I doubt any1 would fit passive resist gear.... LOL, so the shield resist skills are close to useless.
I advise you not to use anymore training time on those skills... instead have a look at the other shields skils for higher shield hp, recharge, and reduces cap use on boosters.....

I have the EM one trained to 5 as it works nicely with CN passive EM module I fit one everything. Caldari shield tankers all have the same hole 0% em and it can get you killed. I know people who fill it with a rig and others that use passive.
CN Mag scatter is about 40% (39.4) so level 5 makes it a 50% mod or a tech 1 active that on all the time. the tech 2 is 37.5% and almost as good. If you use a pure passive tank on a vulture or nighthawk (or drake/ferox) this skill can pau for itself easily, I also have the therm one trained to 4 as I put a CN therm passive on my drakes.

the reason armor tankers need to train it is because their EANM is passive. Our Invul field is not. . .and active is far better. So while I have had the skills in my head, I have never taken them past 1. . .just no point really. ----

Shield resistance skills only affect active hardeners when they're not activated. That's why you're not seeing any difference in resistances in EFT.
Thus, the only reason to have trained them would be if you wanted a completely cap-free passive tank.

Basically those skills have twofold effect: 1) For passive resistance amplifiers they add up to 25% of the amplifier strength. For example Pithum C-Type Magnetic Scattering Amplifier have 41.3% resist With corresponding skill on level it has 51.62% resist bonus.
2) For active ones it doesn't do much if they are not active. However it has bonus of 3% ADDED if the module is not turned on. It is actually a bit strange, but on having all four skills at level V gives you 15% resists if you have Invul Field installed (not turned on). While it is not that usefull on big ships etc, it is quite nice on small ships that have problems with capacitor and not enough slots. Using cheapest Invulnerability Field on small tackler frigate gives it 15% bonus to all resists without using any capacitor. And it takes one mid slot.
So this skill has some uses. Currently my favourite ship is Drake with two high quality Invul fields. But since I have those skills at level V, quite often I don't have to turn them on (I use them in emergency only).

If you are a Drake pilot then they help for obvious reasons. I tend to fit a passive EM or Thermal hardner for mission running, so I have those to 4, Kinetic and Explosive are just at 2 since that took hardly any time and I will use one once in a great while.
I have found that using 1 or 2 passive hardners and an Invul 2 works well on a Rohk since it has a built in resistance skill like the Drake, but I use an active booster for that. It helps a bit with a Rohk's cap, but thats about it. My Raven is usually 2 Invul II's with a rat specific or EM hardner most of the time.

Out of curiousity (Note im not a cap ship pilot so lets keep the flamming to nano's and curses tyvm) I know that cap draining a capitol ship can really hurt it's ability to tank, i.e rokh with a shit ton of Neuts will hurt a cap ship. Wouldnt passive shield modules work well for when you run out of cap or get it completely drained so quickly? even though you might not be able to rep atleast your resists will be a lot higher then they would normmaly.
Or tell me if im wrong =D

Personally, if you're expecting to get hit with a lot of cap warfare you should have the compensation skills trained to L4 minimum regardless of whether you tank passively, actively, or in a hybrid fashion.
When your cap is gone your cap is gone and 12%-15% resistance bonus from a module you can't turn on is 12-15x better than 1%. It might even be, barely, enough to keep you alive. ____________________

I have all the compensation skills to 4 and can confirm that they are useful when you are neuted/nossed and your cap disappears. Your tank can still hold, but may not be as effective, but it might be enough to get the kill or hold on enough to win.
Hope this helps. x

Edited by: Viscount Hood on 12/08/2008 12:18:42 All the active shield resistance modules work passively including invulnerability field, where you get 15% all round resisitance (skills to level 5) with the module not turned on. I use passive modules on assault frigates where saving my cap is needs to be used elsewhere.
