Every MMO where someone complains of lag has people saying "Get a better ISP". Eve is unique in saying "move out of Jita/Motsu/0.0/FW" etc etc insted of blaming your ISP. Anyhow I already avoid hubs so its a non issue for me, but that leaves me with a question.
So, the question is how long do you guess it will be before jita becomes playable on a weekend?

Edited by: Dirk Magnum on 03/08/2008 21:16:05 First of all, Jita plays you. Ne'er is it t'other way 'round tbh.
But Jita is only horrifying if you log off there and then try to log back in. Otherwise it's irritating but if you're only going there to stock up on items or something then you shouldn't have too unpleasant of an experience.
As to the larger question of what makes Eve different than all other MMO's, Tarminic said it best when he pointed out that even when Eve is at its suckiest, it still sucks less than every other MMO.

Not until the new supercomputer and new server code arrive.
Which was supposed to be by the end of this year.

When people who go there get smart enough to start using other market hubs.
For what it's worth I do go to Jita all the time on this alt, but that's because Jita rarely lags to the point where it's a real problem for me (even on Sundays).

Maybe when the Super Computer goes live sometime in the next few years. If it ever does.

Nah, if it gets to where it handle say 1200 people instead of the current 600+ it can take now before lag starts being a problem, then you'll just have 1200 people there instead. People will keep going until it lags.

It is not impossible to have servers that can handle 10,000 people. The question is time. We all know CCP are not using the latest in hardware, probebly due to cost or whatever.

The problem is that CCP's platform has always relied on Moore's law, that the amount of transistors on a cpu will double effectively every two years. What they didn't expect back in pre-2003 was that chip manufacturer's would go for the loophole of just adding more cpu's and cores. In effect EVE cannot utilize the multi-cpu feature on newer servers, and as such is limited to the computing power of the same magnitude as a couple of years ago.
So, even with this supercomputer solution, unless they make groundbreaking changes to their platform we will still be limited in computing power and effectively just raising the player cap by a few hundred or a thousand players at the cost of massive effort and dev-resources.
Short story is, don't expect Jita to run smoothly with the amount of players wanting to go there for a few years, if ever.

EVE is unique becuase pvp is mostly doing what the FC says and F1-F8, instead of independent thought and coordination that goes beyond focus fire.

A jita is the measurement of lag. The plural is also jita.
0 jita = Absolutely no lag noticable. No login waiting time.
0.2 jita = Small lag spikes, otherwise no mentionable lag. No login waiting time.
0.5 jita = Annyoing lag spikes but otherwise only small delay at module activation. Sometimes few minutes login waiting time.
1 jita = Heavily lagged system with module activation around 1 minute and up to 10 minutes login time. While being that laggy it is still not unplayable. Usually no emergency warps.
2 jita = Except emergency warps and long grid loading times. It is not adviced to play in systems rated >1 jita.
3 jita and above = Unplayable. Random warps and black screens. Login usually not possible any more.

Jita will never be playable on weekends since its a gathering point for lemmings. Sorry.
Now, to what makes EVE unique? I have not left EVE, but I have left all other. That in my opinion is what set EVE above the others.

The biggest differences that I can see is the skill system and loss.
Time based training has good and bad things, CCP took away most of the bad things by making it open, as in not being tied down in a class based skill set.
When you loose stuff, it hurts. Be it an expensive bling-mobile or the last two weeks of training because you forgot the damn clone again. MMOs generally try to avoid permanent loss as most people want games to fun and carefree.

The moment when ALL agents are moved out of Jita, and all missions IN Jita get automatically relocated to another system.
After that and the initial Jita playercount spike, the moment where "in-station" gets separated from "in-space".
After THAT and the additional Jita playercount spike, the moment when the Infiniband thingy (that will eventually come) gets PROPER code for it allowing to run a single system on several nodes, or even use several nodes for a single grid.
And so on and so forth until the number of people that actually WANT to go to Jita don't surpass the current hardware limitations... which is another way of saying "not any time soon", but stranger things have happened.

Well, when you get to about 5 Jitas you get node deaths. 7 Jitas is the theoretical maximum, invoking a cascading node crash and a reboot of the server. __________

This ain't WoW kid Eve pwns
0.0 is where all the action is neway people need to stop being such carebears. Jita is the main trade hub of eve plain n simple if people would gradually move out of jita and peddle their wares elsewhere Jita would not be so laggy but with 300+ people in Jita at any given time of course its gonna be laggy. That is why I don't go to Jita

Jita isn't laggy with 500 in local, it only gets really bad above 800-900. And the problem is that Jita has pretty much the same number of NPC kills like Motsu which barely gets around 300 people in local (compared to almost triple in Jita sometimes).
Yes, Jita IS also a pretty damned busy mission hub, NOT just the main trade hub of EVE.

Sorry - nothing is impossible. The question is when. Remember when bill gates said that nobody needed more than 640k of memory? Remember when IBM thought the world market for computers was only 5?
In computing terms, nothing is impossible. Getting 10,000 people in local is not impossible. The only question is when.

Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot it takes so much more skill to press Alt+F1 etc to activate EW, or figure out that the bonuses on ships are useful, or use rep drones.
There's a fine line between game knowledge and skill; eve requires lots of the former but next to none of the latter.
